Shore AC Scouts Earn Winter Racing Badges at USATF National XC Championships
Scout's honor: it was cold! In the wake of a quick-hitting snowstorm (that made travel the day before tricky), arctic air scoured Virginia on race day. Wind chills dipped into the teens Fahrenheit. Athletes and spectators alike bundled up in parkas and ski gloves to fend off the knife-like chill. What's more, some brain-addled trip leader set up a flimsy "tent" with tarp "walls" that broke free and flapped like laughing hyenas. Imagine if we had needed to camp overnight! Fortunately, our mission required just a few daytime hours. (And, thankfully, USATF provided a heated tent.)
Yes, we had traveled to Richmond with an important duty. Our loyal and trustworthy band came to run hard for the club and for each other. Our quest: the satisfaction of a great race, maybe team and individual medals, and points in the 2024 USATF Masters National LDR Team Grand Prix.
USATF National Masters Women 6K Race
After a solemn national anthem complete with color guard, the masters (age 40+) women blasted off from their starting boxes to begin their 6-kilometer showdown. Shore AC had two scout troops in this jamboree: W50+ and W60+. Pre-race analysis suggested that the competition would be stiff, and this proved true.
Women's 50+:
In the women's 50+ category, Greater Philadelphia brought a dynamic duo in Amy Gannon and Abby Dean, who both finished in well under 27 minutes to take the 1 and 2 scoring positions. But the Shore AC 50+ ladies countered with a tight pack, going 3-4-5-6. Laura DeLea led this challenge, storming to a magnificent 27:05 clocking and 80.4% age grading. Ali Marzulla followed with a superb 27:49 as second team scorer. Hot on Ali's heels came Maureen Massell as she darted across the finish line 1 second behind in 27:50 to complete team scoring. Alysia Puma added a very solid 28:10 as insurance runner and displaced Greater Philadelphia's third runner. However, Greater Philly still earned the victory by a close score of 10 to 12. Nevertheless, Shore AC's second place team performance earned 90 points in the 2024 USATF Masters National Team Grand Prix. That moved us into FIRST PLACE in the Grand Prix!
Women's 60+:
In contrast, our Shore AC women's 60+ crew faced not one but two other teams. (Greater Philadelphia would have represented a fourth 60+ team; however, the snowstorm prevented them from having a complete team.) Running without our ace Suzanne La Burt, we made the best of tough circumstances. Nora Cary established a fast pace right from the start and powered to an astounding time of 27:06. That gave the 68-year-old the age grading crown with 91.2%. Meanwhile, Debi Brathwaite, inspired by exhortations from Coach Joe, put the pedal to the metal in her final lap and registered an excellent 31:01 as second team scorer. Defending age 65-69 USATF Masters National Individual Grand Prix Champion Susan Stirrat revved up her engines as well and passed by the checkered flag in 33:04 to complete team scoring. Less that a minute later, Leslie Nowicki notched a very solid 34:01 in an insurance role. Although Atlanta's W60+ team edged us out for second place, our third-place showing still kept us at the top of the 2024 Grand Prix standings. We are now tied for first place with Liberty Athletic Club at 180 points each.

USATF National Masters Men 8K Race
While Mother Nature didn't exactly treat the masters women kindly, she turned downright nasty with the masters men. The wind picked up, and the air seemed to get colder. But that didn't deter us. We had a race to run -- and badges to earn!
Men's 60+
Having dominated the Club XC race in December, consensus had our men's 60+ team winning Richmond even without superstar Rick Lee. We delivered, winning handily. But insiders wondered: how much of a role did the shoes play? You see, our guys had created their own "monsters". They had fitted spike plates onto Vaporfly racing shoes, cobbling perhaps the lightest weight cross country shoes on the planet. Surprisingly, the shoes (mostly) held together.

Front row, left to right: Przemek Nowicki (M40) and Mike Salamone (M60). Back row, left to right: Gary Wiesinger, Joe Maranzani and Eddie Ross (all M40); Henry Notaro, Mark Zamek and Miles Hersey (all M60).

Mark Zamek, who started the Vaporfly shoe modification craze, got the 60+ race party started. He took the early lead in the "race within a race" for those age 60 and over. (The race included 40+ and 50+ men.) The 60+ field included undefeated Nat Larson, who owns every American non-stadia record for the 60-64 age group in distances from the mile to the half marathon. Could Mark pull off a huge upset? After 3 loops of the 4-loop race, Mark held an amazing 7-second lead over Nat. But, as Reno Stirrat reported later, Nat had his eyes fixed on Mark like laser beams. As the pair neared the end of their final 2-kilometer loop, Nat pulled even with Mark. Larson then dropped his unmatched Thor-like hammer and rocketed ahead, beating Zamek by 3 seconds. What a battle! Oh, and given that Larson ran for his club's 50+ team, Mark picked up the number 1 score in M60+ team competition. What a great start to Shore AC M60+ team scoring!
Meanwhile, teammate Henry Notaro was striving mightily to stay ahead of foes Mark Neff (Shadow Project) and Lester Dragstedt (Atlanta Track Club). He succeeded, thanks in part no doubt to his custom-made Vaporspikes. Henry barreled across the timing mat in 30:43, a mere second better than Neff (30:44) and 5 seconds over Dragstedt (30:48). That gave Henry a XC race score of 2. Combined with Zamek's score of 1, this gave our M60+ team a superb 1-2 start! The onus for securing victory now rested on the shoulders of Shore AC's #3 man Mike Salamone. Would his special shoes hold together? All seemed well for Mike until the fourth lap. With 1000 meters to go, the spike plate of his left shoe suddenly detached. Thankfully, a layer of shoe sole remained; Mike did not need to finish the race running barefoot. In fact, he kept his pace and clocked an outstanding time of 32:31. Mike thus contributed a nice low score of 6, making the overall team score 1+2+6 = 9. And get this: had Mike been unable to finish the race, our backup man Miles Hersey would still have kept us on top. Competing for the first time on the Shore AC M60+ A team at a national race, this talented rookie achieved a remarkable time of 33:58. Miles placed #12, the best showing of all insurance runners among the 6 teams in the race. With their victory at Richmond, the Shore AC men's 60+ A team extended their perfect record to 2 wins in the 2024 National Grand Prix.

Men's 40+:
Shore Athletic Club also entered men's 40+ and men's 50+ teams into the USATF National Cross Country Championships. Because we lacked sufficient headcount in those age groups, we filled out the teams with spare 60+ men in order to reach the minimum of 5 men for a team. As a result, we knew the teams would not measure up to the competition; nevertheless, we could collect points in the 2024 USATF National Masters Team Grand Prix.
Our men's 40+ team featured spectacular rookie Eddie Ross. We had met Eddie at the USATF-NJ 8K Cross Country Championships in October, where he clobbered the field with a nearly 2-minute margin in 27:41. Eddie did not disappoint in his first race wearing a Shore AC singlet. He crushed the Richmond course in 28:35 to place third in his 45-49 age group. Hooray, Eddie! Fellow 49-year-old Joe Maranzani delivered a strong 31:45 as our #2 man. So far so good...however, our remaining runners on the M40+ team were the afore-mentioned old guys. Hey, they did well for their age! But they brought up the rear in terms of 40+ team scoring. Hal Leddy continued his recovery from COVID complications with a stellar 36:11. Coach Gary Wiesinger cruised through the 4-loop course in 39:36. Our esteemed 79-year-old teammate Przemek Nowicki completed team scoring when he sailed down the chute in 45:52. (Travel agent Scott Linnell checked in with the team but chose not to race due to a torn meniscus in one knee.) As expected, the Shore AC men's 40+ team finished in 7th (last) place, but chalked up 50 Grand Prix points. Well done, lads!

Men's 50+:
The Shore AC men's 50+ crew was somewhat more competitive, being blessed with a larger contingent of runners in the relevant age group. However, it still required a 60+ runner to reach the minimum of 5 for a men's 50+ team. In fact, we placed two 60+ gentlemen on the squad: 68-year-old Kevin Dollard and 69-year-old Reno Stirrat. Unfortunately, Reno's cantankerous piriformis muscle acted up and forced him to drop out of the race. But that still left 5 guys for a complete team.
Celebrating the start of his eighth year with Shore Athletic Club, Jeff Conston soared like an Eagle Scout, He winged his way to a magnificent time of 30:30 to lead the SAC M50+ flock. Newcomer Joe Demetrick ruffled the feathers of his opponents with a splashing 33:12 as second team scorer. Kevin "The Roc" Dollard seized the challenge of the race in his talons and carried home a marvelous time of 35:19 as the #3 man. As for #4, what was that raven-like tapping, tapping at the door? 'Twas English teacher Eric Puma, turning a triumphant 35:52 score. Quoth he to those that followed, "I will beat thee Evermore!" Minutes later, Mike DiLeva motored like a mighty swan across the timing mat in 38:12 to seal the team scoring. Though our M50+ pack ended in last place, they weren't far behind fifth-place Greater Philadelphia. Good going, gents! You earned 55 points in the 2024 Grand Prix. Keep it up!

USATF National Open Women 10K Race
With an eye on the future, Shore Athletic Club was delighted to enter two young women into the Open race at these national championships. Though we were unable to enter a full team of four runners this year, we hope to do so in coming years.
Little did our two harriers, Amanda Eller and Jenna Lozzi, realize that their race would include obstacles. Hay bales and logs had them leaping like steeplechasers. Despite the obstructions, they powered through to admirable times of 41:32 and 44:38, respectively. Well done, ladies!
