In Two Places at Once: Split Shore AC Squad Covers Grand Prix Kick-Off 15K
Shore Athletic Club athletes are always ready for a challenge. The USATF New Jersey Association gave our long distance runners a doozie by re-scheduling the rained-out Spring Distance Classic 15K (originally slated for March 24) to April 28. Unfortunately for us, the USATF Masters National 10K would take place the same day. We have our priorities. When such a conflict occurs, Nationals get the nod. Hence, a large contingent of our best masters harriers traveled to Massachusetts for the National 10K.
There were numerous other conflicts that weekend, too, and they affected all clubs. The Clinton Country 15K happened the day before. The Brooklyn Half Marathon spirited away numerous folks, as did a variety of other races. Add in Passover and you get the picture. 15K participation suffered across the board. But no other NJ club sent runners to the National 10K in Dedham, MA. Thus, Shore AC was uniquely handicapped. We were left with a skeleton crew for the Spring Distance Classic 15K in New Jersey. Could we compete? Did we even have enough people to enter teams?
Yes we could and yes we did! But it was a nailbiter, especially on the women's side. Let's begin with those great ladies. Despite six of our 60+ and 50+ starlets doing Dedham, a lovely trio of 60+ gals stepped up for the 15K. Though having just suffered through a 2-week illness, Diane Rothman was one of the triplet who answered the call. She set her legs on cruise control and motored to a magnificent 1:16:19 to start the fun. Luz Ravines followed with a solid 1:31:11 in spite of sciatic pain to score second, Leslie Nowicki wrapped up team scoring shortly thereafter with a fine 1:32:56. Thanks to their excellent work, these women put both our 60+ and 50+ teams on the podium! Well done, ladies!
The club was fortunate to have enough younger ladies show up that we could enter 40+ and Open teams. And what terrific teams they were! First-place female Kiera Russo, at the age of 43, spearheaded our charge with a scintillating 59:02 performance to lead both teams. Not far behind, 44-year-old Lauren Jackson sizzled with a speedy 1:04:44 to score second on both teams. Our only under-40 female in this race, namely Christine Arsego, powered across the finish line with a splendid 1:07:17 to occupy the third scoring position on the Shore AC Women's Open team. Next to scurry down the chute was Natacha Smith, "fresh" from 1) having run the Boston Marathon 13 days prior and b) having run the Clinton Country 15K the day prior! Somehow, Natacha powered through the pain to nail a superb 1:09:30. Her finish clinched first place for the 40+ team by a hefty margin of over 20 minutes. Open team scoring wrapped up when Rebecca Keenan sailed across the timing mats in 1:16:03. Rebecca was cautiously testing her rehabilitated leg and held back until the final stretch. Apparently, the test was a success! The Open Team's certainly achieved success, winning by a margin of 23 minutes. Brava, ladies!
How about the Shore AC men, you ask? It was a similar story: generally just enough runners to enter teams. We begin with the merry old fellas. Our 70+ crew was led by the indestructible Peter Auteri. Like the afore-mentioned Natacha Smith, Pete "did the double" by running the Clinton 15K the day before. But he showed no sign of weariness as he cruised to a first-place age group finish in 1:13:18. The next septuagenarian to cross the finish line was also wearing a Shore AC singlet. Ken Wilson delivered a magnificent 1:14:10 as second team scorer. Only a couple of minutes later, the legendary Bill Bosmann barreled over the timing strips with a bodacious 1:16:54 to seal the win for the Shore AC men's 70+ team. Long-time Shore AC harrier Przemek Nowicki provided solid insurance with his 1:31:09 clocking. Hooray, gents!
Shore AC has long prided itself on having exceptionally strong and deep men's 60+ teams. It was thus ironic that, on this day, we failed to reach the minimum of 3 guys for a team. We had but two: Wilson and the woeful Scott Linnell, whose still-healing meniscus in the left knee limited him to a 1:21:24 slog. Thankfully, Grand Prix scoring discards a team's lowest score among the 9 races in the series. Our goose egg in this race will need to be the one discarded score.
As for our men's 50+ team, we scrounged together just enough troopers to reach the minimum of five. 55-year-old Ken Ginsburg led the charge with an outstanding 1:00:48. Fellow 55-year-old John Delaney matched his age-group-winning time of 1:09:01 in the Clinton 15K the day before with a stunning 1:09:27 in this race. The rest of the team was fleshed out by old farts Auteri, Bosmann and Linnell. Remarkably, we took second place!
The Shore AC men's 40+ squad also teetered on the edge with barely the minimum of 5 runners. Human torpedo Joe Maranzani set the tone, scorching the course in 57:11 to seize first place in his 45-49 age group. Park warden extraordinaire Matt Coleman roared down the roads with a blazing 58:51 to keep the team competitive with foes Garmin and Clifton. Older teammates Ginsburg, Delaney and Nowicki did their best to contribute to the cause. Although it wasn't enough to catch Garmin or Clifton, the quintet still placed third within a field of five teams. Well done, lads!
Lady Luck cast good fortune upon us in the men's open division. Four super-charged under-40 racers showed up in Shore AC singlets to save the day. Competing in his first USATF-NJ LDR team championship race, Michael Bond burned rubber as he hurtled to a superb 49:43 finish, good for second place overall. Fellow first-timer Ryan Corbett also made a stunning debut, rocketing to a first-place 30-34 age group finish in 52:25. Teammates Mark Minervini and John Larkin grabbed the second and third places, respectively, in the same 30-34 age group by virtue of their blistering 53:49 and 54:05 performances. With contributions from Maranzani and Coleman, the team achieved a head-spinning average of 53:27 per runner. Needless to say, our Shore AC Men's Open team prevailed. HOORAY!
Next on the Grand Prix schedule is the Our House 4 Miler on May 11. Tune in then to see if Shore AC can staff up and put on a classic SAC ATTACK!
