May 27, 2024, Ridgewood, NJ: "Just singing in the rain". Shore AC ladies exalt over a great 10K race. "What a glorious feeling! I'm happy again!". Left to right: Susan Stirrat, Suzanne La Burt, Rebecca Keenan, Nora Cary and Emma Cary. Photograph is courtesy of Reno Stirrat.
A Glorious Feeling: Shore AC Outraces Rain and Competition at Ridgewood 10K
Like an early motion picture thriller, a downpour struck an hour before the start of our Ridgewood 10K USATF-NJ Open Men's and Open Women's team race. As we early arrivals huddled underneath the Shore AC tent for protection, we wondered what the storm might portend. Will the course flood? Will other runners stay home? Will our beloved tent crumple?
Ah, but the dramatic opening scene segued to a calmer ambiance. The rain tapered off, a horde of runners suddenly materialized -- and the Shore AC tent stood firm. The stage was set for an exciting race!
Though high humidity made racing uncomfortable, our SAC harriers rose to the occasion. The Shore AC women scored their third victory out of three attempts for 2024 in the Open category. Sensational 27-year-old Emma Cary led the charge, blistering the bucolic course in a tremendous time of 38:19 to place first among all women. Ultimate "Murph" Suzanne La Burt, who can handle any challenge known to humankind, busted a scorching 41:37 to score second for the team. At age 60, her phenomenal time equated to an insane age grading of 92.4%. Who could top such a soaring AG? You got it: no one but teammate Nora Cary! The 69-year-old Cary zoomed across the finish line in 43:47, racking up an unbelievable AG of 97.9%. (The American record for 10K in the 70-74 age group is 45:19, set by Jan Holmquist in 2015. You can bet Nora has that record in her sights for next year when she turns 70.) Fourth across for the SAC ladies was Rebecca Keenan. She celebrated her recent return to racing after an injury hiatus by ripping a terrific 46:22. Team scoring was wrapped up in a snap by Maureen Massell when she motored across the timing strip in 48:19. Essential backup was provided by Susan Stirrat (55:08), Leslie Nowicki (59:45) and Luz Ravines (1:03:18). The final tally of team scores revealed a convincing 20-minute win by Shore AC over potent rival Raritan Valley. Brilliantly done, ladies!
By contrast, the Raritan Valley Open Men's team pushed our guys to the brink for second place. (Garden State won handily.) We eked out a mere 14-second advantage over RVRR. Shore AC's lone U40 representative, Mark Minervini, spearheaded our A team's attack. His hypersonic 36:18 ranked seventh overall in the race. The next SAC playmaker to breach the endzone was 62-year-old national-caliber speed demon Henry Notaro. His touchdown-worthy 37:18 corresponded to a superb age grading of 88.6%, highest among all men in the race. Our third scorer was Mr. Guts, a.k.a. Joe Maranzani. He showed up and ran despite having injured his calf muscle two weeks prior in the Our House 4 Mile race. His 38:19 would prove just enough for the team to grab the silver medal. 55-year-old Ken Ginsburg proved that age is just a number by pounding out a magnificent 39:15 as fourth man. Team scoring concluded when Miles Hersey powered through the archway on his extra-long legs, tripping the clock in 42:20. Newcomer Denis Keenan -- Rebecca's dear husband -- celebrated his first race with the club by notching a fine 44:07 in reserve. Mike DiLeva followed shortly thereafter in 44:20, while John Delaney contributed additional insurance with his 46:42. Bravo, gentlemen!
Blessed with eight additional men, Shore AC entered an Open Men's B team as well. Nationally renowned distance king Reno Stirrat lit the way, flashing a scintillating 44:06 at the age of 70. Following Reno's lead, 69-year-old Hal Leddy burnished the reputation of us old men with his outstanding 44:46. Third man Jamie Button sailed over the timing strip in a magnificent 47:19. Soon, Harry Pino would reach paydirt in 49:20, completing his first race after an agonizingly long recuperation from injury. Welcome back, Harry! Team captain Scott Linnell ambled down the chute in a horrific 52:06 to wrap up team scoring, thankful that his still-healing torn meniscus held up. Backstop insurance was graciously contributed by Przemek Nowicki (56:10), Carl Richko (1:03:38) and race director extraordinaire Dan Murphy (1:07:03). Thanks to the collective efforts of this aging octet, the Shore AC Open Men's B team achieved an impressive sixth place out of twelve teams. In doing so, they added 5 valuable points to Shore AC's total in the 2024 Club Grand Prix. Hooray, boys!
