May 11, 2024, Berkeley Heights, NJ: Like morning glories, the women of Shore AC light up the morning with their smiles and energy. Shore AC Decorates Our House 4 Miler in Blazing Colors
Interior designers know: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And we at the Shore Athletic Club get it: not everyone likes our color scheme. But we sure do! Like citoyens of France who feel a call to arms when they observe le drapeau tricolore, or patriotic Americans in sight of the Stars and Stripes, we SAC harriers feel a thrill when we don our blue, red and white singlets.
So, at the Our House 4 Mile race, we decked the roads with our colors. Even before the race began, we spiced up the scene with new Shore AC garb that had just arrived: awesome new shirts, singlets and jackets from the on-line Shore AC store. Feeling dapper, our dashing athletes paraded the Shore AC look throughout the corporate park where the race took place.
Spectators certainly took note. The champions among men and women, and for many of the age groups, wore Shore AC colors. Likewise, first place among all women's teams from Open to 60+, and for most men's team categories, belonged to Shore AC. How is that for a fashion statement?
Let's admire the Shore AC women's team accomplishments for starters. The 60+ ladies had payback on their minds. Two weeks prior, at the first race of the 2024 USATF-NJ Grand Prix, they had lost to Fleet Feet / Essex and Clifton. Things would be different at Our House. Shore AC made certain of victory. Ace Suzanne La Burt poured it on from the very start of the race, screaming down the roads at well under a 7-minute-per-mile pace. When she crossed the finish line in 26:48, SAC fans knew this would be a cheerful day. Meanwhile, age grading virtuoso Nora Cary was painting a running masterpiece of her own. Despite being age 69, she far outdistanced all other 60+ gals not named Suzanne La Burt and finished in 28:30 to snare a phenomenal top age grading of 94.7%. Given that the first two female finishers over age 60 wore Shore AC colors, we established a sizeable lead over the opposing teams. When Susan Stirrat flew across the timing mats in 34:05, their mission was accomplished! Shore AC's W60+ had won with 7 minutes to spare. Luz Ravines (37:05) and Leslie Nowicki (41:31) ensured success with their solid insurance contributions.
The Shore AC women's 50+ team faced a similar situation. Having placed third in the Spring Distance Classic 15K two weeks prior, our W50+ crew yearned to right their ship. With Cary blazing the path, they started off the Our House 4 Miler on top. Sophomore sensation Maureen Massell kept up the team's momentum, nailing a 31:06 to top the second-place scorers of all other 6 teams. Our almost-65-year-old star Debi Brathwaite sealed the victory with her splendid 33:52 -- with 3 minutes to spare! Nowicki served as all-important backstop. Brava, dames!
As for our W40+ squad, the goal was different: to keep our winning ways rolling. Lauren Jackson dashed off a 27:35 portrait of prowess to begin the team's defense of first place. Massell and Brathwaite then repeated their 2-3 scoring order duet to secure victory. The team prevailed over second place by nearly 5 minutes. Way to get the job done, ladies!
A bit more drama loomed in the Women's Open competition. Raritan Valley has been building an excellent cadre of young female talent. Their top stars entered Our House, threatening to upend our early lead in the 2024 Grand Prix. Could we fend off their mighty challenge? Our Kerry Dyke provided a preview of the outcome when she hurtled through the finish chute in a streaking 24:57 (6:14 per mile pace) to place first among all women. A mere 14 seconds later, second-year superstar Emma Cary whirled by finish flag in 25:11. Combined, they had staked the Shore AC Women's Open team to a 3-minute lead once Raritan Valley's top two speedsters Cassandra Raia and Taylor Rehe rocketed home. Could the 3-4-5 portion of our lineup keep RVRR at bay? La Burt came to our Open team's aid once again to increase our lead to 4 minutes. Jackson added another 1-minute hedge. Our team's fate now rested on Stirrat's 68-year-old shoulders and a 5-minute cushion. Could Susan deliver? You bet! She finished well within 2 minutes of Raritan's #5 scorer, thus cementing the win. HOORAY!
Now, how about the Shore AC men? As with the ladies, our numbers skewed towards the elder ages. Hence, we fleshed out our younger age group teams with greybeards. (Masters runners can be included on two age group teams). Because we had some high-powered old men, they did help the younger teams reach the podium.
We commence with the colorful 70+ Shore AC crew. This merry band prevailed with ease, even without the just-aged-up juggernaut Reno Stirrat (whom we assigned to younger teams). Oft-times 70-74 age group champion Peter Auteri cooked up a flaming 30:58 to start the feast. Triathlete extraordinaire Ken Wilson tossed in a savory 31:52 to complement the meal. Famous author Marc Bloom then laid down a sweet 34:32 to wrap up team scoring before any runner from another 70+ team had crossed the finish line. Stalwart Shore AC veterans Przemek Nowicki (37:01) and Paul Deykerhoff (37:18) provided the perfect insurance to complete a first-class dining experience. Bravo, gents!
We had enough old men to enter two 60+ teams. Team A was spearheaded by Stirrat in a whizzing 28:37. Long-time high school coach Gary Wiesinger battled the hills to score an excellent 29:18. When Auteri rode through the chute a minute later, the team clinched its first victory of the 2024 Grand Prix with 8 minutes to spare. Wilson ensured victory as backstop. Yessss!
Our men's 60+ B team picked up valuable Grand Prix points for the club by finishing in fifth place. The trio consisted of Bloom, Nowicki and Deykerhoff. Well done, men!
As for the 50+ team scene, a new dynamic is taking shape. The Clifton Road Runners now sport a talented and deep squad that is tough to beat. They crushed our 50+ platoon at Our House by 12 minutes despite our best efforts. Shore AC 60+ beast Henry Notaro did all he could to stake the M50+ team to an early lead, scorching the hilly course in a sizzling 24:46. Henry's fantastic performance garnered him first place in age grading among masters men with an 84.7% rating. After Wiesinger crossed as our second scorer, we welcomed back Mike DiLeva from injured reserve and delighted in his magnificent 29:36. Fellow 50-59 harrier John Delaney added to his high-flying Individual Grand Prix score when he sped over the timing strips in 30:23. Our other 50-59 runner in this race, Bob Shields, suffered a hamstring tweak midway through the race. Though he managed to finish, his time of 32:17 as final scorer lay far from his much loftier expectations. Speaking of hobbled, Scott Linnell went through the motions on his still-healing torn knee meniscus and crossed in 33:23 to provide the team some insurance. The bottom line? We were happy to at least finish second, and we're hungry to respond better to Clifton's challenge!
The same story played out in the men's 40+ team competition. However, in this younger age division we battled to within 3 minutes of Clifton, thanks to mighty contributions from our two 40-49 warriors. With Notaro once again trailblazing, elite harrier Joe Maranzani gutted out a heroic run to finish in 26:32. Joe would normally have been pounding pavement in lockstep with Notaro. However, at a turnaround close to Mile 2, his calf suddenly seized up. Joe still ran the second half of the race -- and even won his age group -- despite severe pain. Meanwhile, Andrew Yearsley made a triumphant return to USATF-NJ team championship racing after nearly a year's hiatus by slamming down a superb 27:14. DiLeva, Delaney and Shields completed the team, which placed second. That's good! But you know we're salivating for more!
We did taste sweet victory in the Men's Open division. Here, too, Raritan Valley posed a threat, as they have enlisted a bevy of solid young men. We had to be on our game. Legendary human rocket Justin Scheid paved the way, hammering out a jaw-dropping 21:00 to win the race. In a heart-palpitating duel, Justin nipped independent runner William Brancato at the finish line after shadowing him throughout the challenging 4-mile course. The adoring crowd had hardly settled down before Shore AC's #2 man, Mark Minervini, blasted down the final hill to cross in a scintillating 22:50. A 3-4-5 trio of Maranzani, Yearsley and Stirrat slammed the door on the competition with a 9-minute margin. Thankfully, the team had no need for backup slowpoke Linnell. Victory was theirs! Way to go, guys!
