Though Sparse and Battered, Shore AC Zones into Mile with Big Impact
It's dubbed "crunch time" for more than one reason. The primary one is that this stretch of time from mid-May to mid-June features a USATF-NJ team championship race practically every weekend. Also, it being the height of spring, we can call it crunch time due to a myriad of other activities demanding our time: graduations, kids' sports, vacations, you name it.
Considering the scheduling challenges, we Shore AC partisans counted ourselves fortunate the night before the Mile By Impact Zone masters team championship race. Enough SAC members had responded to the call of duty that we could enter teams in all of our usual age groups. That meant squads for men's 40+ through 70+ and women's 40+ through 60+ age groups. Lucky us! Or so we thought.
Misfortune struck suddenly overnight and on race morning. Susan Stirrat suffered a collision with her 100-pound dog that sidelined her from running for a few days. Then, Maureen Massell became stranded by car trouble and couldn't make it to the race. Without those two ladies, we lacked the required headcount for women's 40+ and 50+ teams -- and barely had enough for a 60+ team.
As for the men, we were to a large extent the walking wounded. Bob Shields had a tweaked hamstring and needed to be extra-careful in the race. Yours truly, Scott Linnell, was in his sixth month of physical therapy for a torn meniscus. And, on a cheerful note, we welcomed back Chris Rinaldi to his first race since a very serious accident last fall. Having broken five ribs, Chris explained that he would most likely need to stop and walk several times due to his still-limited lung capacity. In light of our woes, expectations were understandably low.
Although the low expectations mostly came to fruition, there were positives. Let's focus on one of those positives: the women. Despite the previously-mentioned setbacks to Susan and Maureen, we still had enough ladies for a 60+ team. They rose to the occasion and won! Our 69-year-old national sensation Nora Cary led the way, storming through the almost-2-loop course in a tremendous time of 6:29. In doing so, Nora snared first place in the age grading competition with her virtuoso 91.7% performance. Cheers were still echoing when Diane Rothman sped pell-mell over the timing mats to record a fabulous 6:46. Given Diane's 65 years, her age grading equated to a superb 83.1%. The 60+ team achieved victory when Leslie Nowicki whirled through the finish line arch in a marvelous time of 8:09. Brava, ladies!
Although she had no 40+ team to compete for, Rebecca Keenan made the best of her team-less circumstances. She ripped a terrific 6:23 to pave the way for Nora. Well done, Rebecca!
When the women's race concluded, it was time for the masters men to gather at the starting line for their showdown. Pre-race analysis suggested that the thin and ragged Shore AC men's teams would succumb to faster and deeper teams from other clubs. It proved true. However, we came close!
That pre-race analysis did project victory by our men's 70+ crew. Even though we won unopposed, this team earned its medals. Legendary lancet Reno Stirrat launched our attack with a speedy 6:29 to get the team rolling. Veteran SAC warrior Przemek Nowicki, still cranking at age 79, put the running world on notice that with his 8:09 he will wreak havoc when he turns 80 in September. Yeoman Carl Richko polished off the conquest when he sailed through the finish chute to 8:25. Hats off to you three!
Not many years ago, it was simply a given that Shore AC men would rule the 60+ team competition, sometimes even going 1-2-3. No more! Time marches on. As it does, great runners age up from 50+. Also, talented new runners move into the area or take up the sport. It keeps the competition challenging and dynamic. So it was that our 60+ team at Mile by Impact Zone fell to a better team from Fleet Feet / Essex. We gave it our best shot, though. Hal Leddy, clawing his way back to full speed after a 2-year struggle with post-COVID effects, pounded out a very encouraging 6:14. After Stirrat scooted home as second team scorer, Linnell squeezed out what little energy remained in his knee-impaired body to close out team scoring in a doleful 6:44. Thankfully, it was good enough for second place within a field of four 60+ teams.
Our 50+ team came close to winning. It faced just one other team, namely Clifton. We knew it would be a battle. Shore AC 50+ ace Ken Ginsburg spearheaded our attack, charring the course in 5:36. Things were looking up! Next came thoroughly wonderful performances by Mike DiLeva (6:02) and John Delaney (6:06), further whetting the appetites of Shore AC supporters. With 69-year-old Leddy dazzling next in 6:14, hopes soared sky-high. Alas, Clifton was keeping pace with us. When their fourth man crossed the finish line 1 second behind Hal, they held a 7-second advantage. Could our fifth man, Bob Shields, run fast enough on his ginger hamstring muscle to beat Clifton's fifth man by at least 7 seconds? Fearless Bob crossed in 6:57. However, Clifton's last scorer, Jim Nicosia, had already finished in 6:34. We had to settle for second place. Nevertheless, Shore AC fans found something joyful to cheer about. At 7:49, Chris Rinaldi strode confidently over the timing mat to complete his first race in nearly 6 months. Though he needed to stop several times to walk and catch his breath, he made it. What a thrill for everyone! Nowicki added solid insurance as seventh man. Good work, lads, under arduous circumstances!
The story was much the same with our 40+ squad. We possessed decent fire power, just not enough to counter our foes. The sextet of Ginsburg, DiLeva, Delaney, Linnell, Shields and Rinaldi came within 30 seconds of third-place Fleet Feet / Essex. Hey, at least we scrouged together a team and scored Grand Prix points. That's more than seemed possible in the days leading up to the race. The dedication of our athletes was on full display at Miles by Impact Zone. You make Shore AC proud!
