Shore AC Celebrates Junefest at Fitzgerald's Lager 5K
Although the cool breeze suggested October, our calendars read June. So, let's call it "Junefest"! Like the real Oktoberfest in Munich, beer flowed and mugs clinked as runners celebrated good times at the Fitzgerald's Lager 5K in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.
Among the nearly 1,000 harriers in the race were 30 Shore AC revelers who earned their post-race beer. Our ranks included a remarkable number of SAC ladies: 16 in all across 40s, 50s and 60s age groups. They infused our masters women's teams with hoppy froth!
Like they have all season, the Shore AC age 60+ gals brewed a masterful product. They were potent enough to place first and fourth out of six teams. At the lead of this beautiful entourage was the incomparable Nora Cary. To find inspiration for their next autobahn driving machines, German automakers should turn to Nora. She sped to a head-spinning 20:59, which at her age of 69 equates to a world-class 98.93% age grading. Next down the chute for the W60+ A team was Phillies super-fan Donna Grocki. After having spent 2.5 hours in Sunday afternoon shore traffic on the Garden State Parkway, her legs celebrated escape from sitting by rocketing down the roads of Glen Ridge to a fabulous 22:41. Donna's 85.66% age grading ranked her fourth among all women in this highly competitive race. Rounding our A team scoring was Diane Rothman. Her superb time of 23:04 rendered the 65-year-old a turbo-charged 85.33% age grading. It placed her fifth among all women. Fellow 65-year-old Debi Brathwaite provided the team with rock-solid insurance when she crossed in 25:23. When team scores were tallied, our A squad occupied first with a nearly 9-minute margin over rival Fleet Feet / Essex. Brava ladies!
The Shore AC women's 60+ B team was led by 2023 USATF Masters National LDR 65-69 Age Group Grand Prix champion Susan Stirrat. Her 26:10 beat all but two runners from other W60+ teams. Leslie Nowicki continued her upward momentum with an encouraging 28:10 as second team scorer. In a few blinks of an eye, Luz Ravines then broke the timing plane in 28:24 to complete team scoring, battling sciatica the entire way. That Luz is a warrior!

High-level performance carried the Shore AC women's 50+ teams to outstanding results as well. Heading the stampede was another 2023 USATF Masters National Age Group Grand Prix Champion: Suzanne La Burt. Though 61 years old, she outruns all but the very fastest 40+ and 50+ ladies. Suzanne stormed through the 5K Lager course in a whirlwind 19:38, nailing an almost -inconceivable 95.28% age grading. With Cary notching second place for the W50+ A team, the third and final scoring position was filled by the club's social media maestro, Laura DeLea. Racing after a many-month hiatus due to multiple injuries, Laura cut loose with a remarkable 21:49. First reserve runner Crissa Thurman celebrated her first team race as a 50-year-old by tripping the clock in 22:11. Maureen Massell conferred even more insurance to the A team by spinning a fine 23:43. As a whole, our A team quintet outran all other team by a 9-minute margin -- all others, that is, except a national-championship caliber W50+ squad from Garden State Track Club. There is no shame in bowing the trio to Aliaga, Panepinto and Beebe.
Meanwhile, five of the Shore AC 60+ ladies ran as the W50+ B team and drew attention of their own. Rothman, Brathwaite, Stirrat, Nowicki and Ravines came within a minute of fourth-place Raritan Valley on their way to notching fifth place within a field of ten teams. Hooray, sole sisters!

More action pictures by Reno Stirrat, this time of our 50-59 gals -- plus 61-year-old La Burt.
Unbridled joy permeated the Shore AC tent before the race as we welcomed back some key age 40-49 ladies. With their help, our two W40+ teams rocked the field of 16 teams. Our A and B teams vanquished all foes not named Garden State Track Club. As for GSTC, they showed that, in the 40+ team category, they may just have the finest set of runners in the country. Their A and B teams eclipsed our A team, and their C team beat our B team. Long may our rivalry continue!
Speaking of our A team, it was spearheaded by that afore-mentioned 61-year-old superstar La Burt. Karen Dos Santos then made her glorious return to racing after being sidelined for many months by injury. Her 20:23 represented a promising start in her return to elite competition. With DeLea completing team scoring and Thurman checking in as first backstop, Karyn Baig registered an excellent 22:37 to strengthen the team's safety net. Despite losing to Garden State's A and B teams, the Shore AC W40+ team maintained their lead in the 2024 USATF-NJ Grand Prix!
As for the B team, Lindsay Bergman trailblazed a stunning 21:15 in her glorious return to the club. Almost-50-year-old Rebecca Keenan followed with a fine 22:23. After Grocki completed team scoring and Massell offer a first insurance policy, educator Kim Anicito schooled the course in 25:06 to contribute a valuable secondary insurance policy. This superb team added 4 points to Shore AC's club Grand Prix total. Awesome!

The competitive landscape was somewhat different on the men's side in the Lager 5K, as the race was an Open Men's team championship event. As such, it featured a bevy of tremendously fast young men. Nevertheless, masters (age 40+) guys factored heavily in the team results.
The same was true of our Shore AC Open Men's A team. While it contained two outstanding U40 sharpshooters, we relied on masters men to flesh out the squad. Thankfully for us, those 40+ guys were pretty fast themselves! But it was 24-year-old Brian Hill who set the standard for the A team. He and two other falcons soared to the front of the pack. In the end, Brian seized third place overall with a steel-taloned strike of 15:06. (Younger brother Troy swooped to the finish even sooner in 15:01 to snare second place.) The next Shore AC teammate to pass under the balloon arch was a masters man: 41-year-old phenomenon Marc Blanco. Marc tore apart the 5K route in a torrid 16:56. U40 stalwart Mark Minervini zoomed across the timing mats soon thereafter in 17:32 as third scorer. Another SAC regular, 46-year-old Joe Maranzani, filled in the fourth scoring slot for the team when he crossed in 18:44. Newcomer Patrick Anderson wrapped up A team scoring with a fine debut of 19:01. A half-minute later, 50-year-old Ken Kropac limped across the finish line in 19:33. Ken was tripped midway through the race and sustained serious road rash. Knowing that his A-team buddies needed him, Ken rose bleeding and finished to provide all-important backup. Our A team ended up just off the podium in fourth, less than 30 seconds behind third-place Freedom-Garmin. Bravo, lads!

"The end is nigh." Final stretch photographs of the leaders and the Shore AC Open Men's A team by Reno Stirrat. Not pictured: Ken Kropac.
While our A team glistened with youth, the Shore AC Open Men's B team consisted entirely of men with more than half a century under their belts. Mike DiLeva spearheaded this geriatric crew as he hit paydirt in a speedy 20:58. Dad Brian Hill did his 57-year-old legs proud, closing 4 second later in 21:02. John Delaney scored third for the Ben Gay parade, notching a solid 21:55. A half-minute later, 66-year-old Jamie Button sailed his schooner into harbor with a 22:26.44. Septuagenarian Ken Wilson wrapped up B team scoring with a triathlete-worthy 23:04. Ken's contemporary, 72-year-old Pete Auteri, closed close behind in 23:07 to give the team solid backup. Shore AC partisans had some time to munch on pretzels before Scott Linnell lumbered onto the scene, lugging his out-of-shape body over the finish line in a hideous 24:38. (The good news was that Scott's healing medial meniscus in the left knee tolerated the race with no pain.) Soon thereafter, Przemek Nowicki gave the crowd something to really cheer about. The almost-80-year-old motored over the finish line in 25:24 to win his 75-79 age group! Extra huzzahs sounded when it became clear that the B team had finished tenth out of 19 teams. Well done, gentlemen!
