Shore AC Blossoms on New Opening Day for 2024 USATF-NJ Team Competition
The kick-off for state-level team tilts was supposed to have been the Spring Distance Classic 15K race on March 24. Mother Nature had a different plan. She flooded the roads in Basking Ridge the day before and forced race management to postpone the 15K. Consequently, the next race on the competition calendar for 2024, namely the Cherry Blossom 10K on April 7, became the new Opening Day.
Eco Mama cooperated this time. She decked out Newark's beautiful Branch Brook Park in a vast canopy of cherry blossoms, all at their peak. What a display! Inspired by the profusion of color, Shore AC's co-ed team painted its own masterpiece. With elegant strokes, they scored a magnificent age grading average of 84.96%. The competition, though replete with talent, couldn't come close to such brilliance.
At the heart of this fantastic feat ran a trio of our nationally renowned age 60+ ladies, namely Nora Cary, Suzanne La Burt and Susan Stirrat. Nora keeps on stunning the running world with her utterly phenomenal performances. On this day, her time of 43:23 equated to a spectacular 98.75% age grading. But Nora was not alone in setting such insane standards of greatness. Suzanne left jaws dropped in amazement left and right as she stormed across the finish line in 40:26 to spear a shimmering 93.85% AG. Magnificent! And the hit parade kept coming! Susan stepped up big time, ripping a 52:42 that earned her an 80+ AG for the first time ever! In addition to these three scoring starlets, three other SAC luminaries shone brightly. Debi Brathwaite uncorked a 50:34 to notch a superb AG of 79.06%. Luz Ravines fought ferociously with sciatica to eke out a 57:44 and 67.45% AG. Mere seconds later, Leslie Nowicki checked in at 57:47 with a solid 65.68%.
The Shore AC men were led in age grading by the legendary Reno Stirrat. Not so many years ago, ridiculously high AGs were the norm for him. Regrettably, the injury bug began to bite Reno in his early 60s. It's been a tough road since. But, with only 2 weeks until his 70th birthday, Reno celebrated a breakthrough. Pacing Nora, Reno sailed across the timing mat in 43:19 to notch an 81.66% AG. That ranked as third best among masters men in the race. Our second-best male age grader was a relative youngster: 46-year-old Joe Maranzani. He scorched the single-loop course in a searing 36:53 (77.89% AG), beating all other masters men in the race. Bravo! Rounding out the scoreboard was Peter Auteri. He staked himself to a solid lead in the 2024 USATF-NJ Individual LDR Grand Prix by finishing first in the 70-74 category with an excellent time of 47:10. His corresponding 77.47% AG cemented victory for the Shore AC co-ed team. A cadre of SAC road warriors contributed backup insurance. John Larkin sped to a tremendous 35:07, finishing fourth overall and proffering a 75.58% AG. Mark Minervini rocketed home right behind John -- i.e., in fifth place overall -- in a time of 35:38. Mark thereby added an AG of 74.09%. Peter Auteri's contemporary Ken Wilson motored through the chute in 48:43 to nail a 75.00% AG. Bob Shields continued his remarkable recovery from major illness by pounding out a 42:30, good for a 73.61% AG. Przemek Nowicki delivered a fine 56:15 for 72.86% AG, thereby putting octogenarian harriers on notice that he will be upending their pecking order soon. (He turns 80 in September.) John Delaney continued racing strong with a 44:21 for 69.92% AG. Finally, from the "some people never learn" category, Scott Linnell crossed the line in 53:41 after having jogged through the course on a half-healed torn meniscus. Happily, he experienced no sharp pain and no major setback in his recovery.
Having won the first of four co-ed team races in 2024, Shore AC will be tested again at the next one: the Sunset Classic 5 Miler on June 27. But now all eyes will likely shift to a rescheduled Spring Distance Classic 15K race on April 28, which will kick off the USATF-NJ Paul Miller Auto Group LDR Club/Team Grand Prix. GOOOOO SHORE AC!!!
