Shore AC Gains Ground and Loses Ground in XC Kick-off
It must have been the luck of the Irish. An emerald paradise greeted the folks who converged on Natirar Park on the last Sunday in August for the USATF New Jersey Association's 5K Cross Country Meet. Copious summer rains had kept the grass green. That meant a nice and soft -- and in some spots even splashy-- surface on which runners would begin their race. Add in a bright early morning sun surrounded by azure skies and you could almost believe that you were in Ireland watching Notre Dame take on Navy in the 2023 college football kick-off.
How enthralled we were to assemble at the starting line, primed to begin the match. Our enthusiasm made up for scant participation. End-of-summer vacations had spirited many away. Perhaps some had even jetted off to Dublin to watch the Fighting Irish battle the Midshipmen. Nevertheless, seven running clubs were able to field teams in at least some categories for the first USATF-NJ XC Team Championship Race of 2023.
To the delight of spectators, the competition cooked! Excellent performances spiced up every age group. Shore AC contributed its share of outstanding individual races. In several cases, that led to team wins. Such victories meant that we gained ground in the 2023 USATF-NJ Grand Prix in those respective age groups. However, in other cases we lacked the depth needed to excel as a team. That's where we lost ground in the Grand Prix standings. I invite you, dear reader, to take a seat on the Blarney Stone whilst I break it all down for you.
Let us commence our review of the race with the lovely Shore AC ladies. By good fortune, we drew enough age 60+ gals to enter both a 60+ team and a 50+ team. National-caliber ace Nora Cary quarterbacked the trio. She stunned the crowd with a jaw-dropping time of 23:45, good for an absolutely exceptional 86.23% age grading. And get this: Nora had broken her foot last winter and spent most of spring season in a boot. How is that for a quick recovery?! Fellow 65+ harrier Diane Rothman distinguished herself with a fine 26:23 performance. It corresponded to a 74.61% AG that placed her fifth on the AG charts among all women. Longtime Shore AC member Kim Hart delivered a very solid 27:44 to round out the team. With such terrific performances, our triplet nailed first place in the women's 60+ team competition and an impressive second among six teams in the 50+ category. Brava, ladies!
Alas, our Shore AC ranks lacked enough runners to enter a women's 40+ team. We had two ladies of the proper age but lacked a third to reach the minimum for a team. Thankfully, we scraped together just enough gals to enter a Shore AC Women's Open team. Veteran Kellee McEwen spearheaded this potent quintuplet. Her magnificent time of 21:44 ranked Kellee third among female finishers. Moments later, new club member Alicia Ezekiel-pipkin made a dashing debut with her scintillating 21:50. Next to cross the finish line for the team was do-it-all Shore AC shining light Erin O'Neill. Her strong 24:14 kept the team close to front-runner Raritan Valley. Shore AC partisans had to keep their heads on swivels at this point, as Kim Anicito darted through the chute seconds later in 24:38 to keep the heat on RVRR. Club stalwart Liz Spector wrapped up team scoring when she roared home in 26:56. It was a great effort by all five of our ladies, bringing the team within 1 point of race champion Raritan Valley. We can't wait for a rematch at the By Hook Or By Crook 12K race on September 17!

Now, let's talk about those swashbuckling Shore AC men. The older gents found their four-leaf clovers. The eldest of the bunch, namely our age 70+ yeomen, fended off worthy challenges from Fleet Feet and Clifton to secure a win. Bill Bosmann set the tone, scurrying over the hilly course to finish in 27:18 and place second among 70+ team scorers. Jim Wright and Carl Richko formed a tenacious tandem to complete team scoring, completing the tough course in 29:14 and 29:35, respectively to score 4 and 5. Our total team score of 11 edged out Fleet Feet's 14 for the victory!
As has been the case for many years running, our men's 60+ squad had no problem dispatching the competition. In his first team race as a 60-year-old, Terry Lusardi cut loose with a sensational 22:04 to pace the boys in white. Powerhouse Gene Gugliotta bounced back from injury with a very encouraging 23:18 as second team scorer. National legend Reno Stirrat locked in the team's victory with a superb 23:32. (Watch out, world: Reno turns 70 next April!) Not too much later, Scott Linnell slogged to a 24:13 clocking as insurance runner and displacer of competitors.
Shore AC was fortunate enough to have a men's 60+ B team in this race. Our afore-mentioned trio of septuagenarians delivered a useful sixth-place finish within the field of seven 60+ teams. Bravo, guys!
Our good fortune extended to the 50+ age group. Entrepreneur Chris Rinaldi led the Shore AC 50+ troupe with a bullish 21:04. Tim McQueen was back to his old form, finishing close behind Chris with a magnificent 21:20. Lusardi, Gugliotta and Stirrat hammered in the remaining three team scoring positions to prevail over the other three 50+ teams. Second-year harrier John Delaney continued his improvement arc by scoring 24 minutes flat. After Linnell crossed, rookie Jeff Robinson impressed with his 29:40 on a challenging course. Well done, lads!
As for the men's 40+ category, well, Clifton thumped us. They have enlisted a bevy of talented runners over the past 2 years and are now reaping the benefits. We did notch second place, so that's good. With Rinaldi trailblazing the way for our 40+ team, Dan Campbell finished right behind with a convincing 21:05. After McQueen crossed, Mike Raples got into the swing of the race with a time of 23:24. Delany rounded out the fivesome nicely.
Our Men's Open team suffered the most among Shore AC teams on this day. It featured an outstanding duo up front but lacked the required depth to vie for a podium spot. Perennial Shore AC standard bearer Justin Scheid scorched hill and dale in 17:17 to win the individual race. Teacher John Larkin schooled the field with an Advanced Placement level time of 18:25. Masters runners Campbell, Raples and Robinson then contributed their best. However, masters-age runners don't stand much of a chance in the far more competitive Open category. We placed fourth out of five Open teams. It goes to show that, if we want to rule the roost in the Open category., we need more of our young superstars to help at USATF-NJ Grand Prix Team Championship races. Let's start with the By Hook Or By Crook 12K battle on September 17!
