Real Beauties! Shore AC Waxes Golden at Indianapolis Mile
Close shave, America! Close shave! No this wasn't a Barbasol commercial. It was the sigh of relief from Shore AC members upon learning that our men's 60+ team had won their team competition by a mere second at the 2023 USATF Masters National Mile in Indianapolis. Yes, in the end, they were looking pretty.
So were the Shore AC 60+ women. Though their team ran unopposed, these Proud Marys didn't relax and put their feet up. Nay, they paddled their hardest. In the process, they created a golden classic that "The Queen" Tina Turner would have admired!
Meanwhile, the Shore AC men's 50+ team and the men's 60+ B team fashioned their own finely groomed masterpieces as they placed fourth in their respective divisions.
Salivating for a peek at the details? :Let's peer in first on the 60+ men. The "A" team trio featured daredevil explorer Rick Lee. Fresh from the South African bush, where he competed in the Comrades ultramarathon two weeks before, Rick looked fresh as ever. He ran that way, too, darting ahead of a powerful 60+ field to win his age group in 5:06 and set the tone for Shore AC. Rookie sensation Mark Zamek followed in Rick's wake with a carefully controlled sprint (to avoid aggravating a hamstring issue) to notch a superb 5:21. With two magnificent scores to its credit, the Shore AC men's 60+ A team's fortunes now rested on third man and fellow rookie Gary Wiesinger. Pre-race competitive analysis had indicated that Gary would need to run a 6:05 mile or better for the team to beat rivals CHT Elite and Boulder. Gary had run an indoor 6:10 mile earlier in the year, so we had confidence that he could get the job done. As it turned out, Gary ran faster than we expected, zipping through the flat course in a remarkable chip time of 5:57! Quick post-race math showed that we had won by a margin of 4 seconds over CHT Elite. Yippee!!! Case closed, right? Wrong! Team scores are based on gun time, not chip time. Being a gentleman, Gary had showed deference at the starting line to those he figured were faster than him. Hence, it took Gary 5 seconds after the starting pistol sounded to cross the starting line. His gun time was thus 6:01. When gun times for all M60+ teams were factored in, wouldn't you know? There was a ONE SECOND difference between Shore AC and CHT Elite! There was a MASSIVE sigh of relief when we saw that Shore AC remained champion! Congratulations to Rick, Mark and Gary for a TREMENDOUS performance!!!

Now, let's poke our heads into the spa where the Shore AC age 60+ ladies are decompressing after their intense race. Newly minted 60-year-old Suzanne La Burt spearheaded this team's charge. More than team pride was at stake for Suzanne. She was locked in a head-to-head battle with the great Doreen McCoubrie for the title of 60-64 age group individual champion. As they neared the finish, Suzanne slammed her motor into high gear and sprinted away from her rival. Not only did Suzanne win her age group -- with a sizzling chip time of 5:45.9 -- she came within ONE SECOND (there's that number again!) of Kathryn Martin's American record of 5:44. Wow!!!! Next for the team came a courageous Debi Brathwaite. Wrestling with a nagging hamstring injury, she pushed through the 1-mile course knowing that her team needed her to finish. Debi's solid time of 7:31 stood as testimony to her grit. Shortly thereafter, defending 65-69 age group national champion Susan Stirrat nailed a time of 7:48 to complete team scoring. As Susan stated later, it wasn't her finest race; however, she was over-the-moon delighted to have helped Shore AC earn their first-ever national championship in the women's 60+ category. Huzzah, ladies!
June 24, 2023, Indianapolis, IN: The Shore AC men's 50+ team basks in bright morning sunshine before taking on some of the nation's best teams in the mile. Left to right: Jeff Conston, Chris Rinaldi and Mike DiLeva.
Back in the men's lounge, we find the Shore AC men's 50+ trio getting a much-needed rubdown after their tremendous race. Speed demon Jeff Conston led the squad with a roaring 4:59.4. This huge accomplishment landed Jeff on the podium with a third place finish in his 55-59 age group. Chris Rinaldi masterminded his own sparkling race, dashing through the chute in 5:24.5 -- just 2 seconds shy of the podium in the 50-54 age group. Mike DiLeva wrapped up team scoring with a tour de force delivery: a personal record of 5:51.8! As a team, this threesome exceeded expectations. They came within 7 seconds of a potent Indiana Elite squad and the third spot on the podium. Superbly done, gents!
June 24, 2023, Indianapolis, IN: The Shore AC men's 60+ B team, a.k.a. The Three Amigos, celebrate 6 years of running together as they prepare for the Monumental Mile. Left to right: Kevin Dollard, Reno Stirrat and Scott Linnell.
Finally, somewhere out on a golf course, a soccer pitch or a bucolic mountain trail, we might find the members of the Shore AC men's 60+ B team performing post-race recovery in their own unique fashion: swapping stories, singing songs or sleeping on a sun-drenched rock. They knew from the get-go that they were destined for fourth place among M60+ teams in this race. Nevertheless, they attacked with determination. Kevin Dollard set the tone with a perfectly paced 5:55.9 gem. Scott Linnell sputtered down the home stretch and crossed the finish line in a disappointing 6:04.09, but still managed to exceed 80% age grading. Shore AC Hall Of Fame Inductee Reno Stirrat judiciously guarded his fickle hamstring while cruising to a safe 6:23, thereby ensuring a bona fide team score. Yes, this trio of aging 65+ harriers finished well behind their younger competitors. But they cherished the 70 Grand Prix points earned, thereby moving the Shore AC men's 60+ B team up to 14th place in the standings. Go, boys, go!!!
