April 30, 2023, Dedham, MA: Brimming with glee, the Shore AC men's 60+ team savors a stunning second-place finish. Left to right: Reno Stirrat, Mark Zamek and Gary Wiesinger.
Holy Ulysses! Shore AC Survives James Joyce Ramble and Snares Silver
Mist shrouded the streets of Dedham, lending them an air of Dublin or even the Aegean Sea. As runners navigated the streets, actors in period costumes appeared roadside like sirens, reading passages from James Joyce's Ulysses in their best imitation of an Irish brogue. According to our man Reno Stirrat, if you noticed them reading, you weren't running fast enough!
Our Shore AC athletes heeded Reno's advice and lashed their minds securely to their masts. They shunned the seductive narrations and focused instead on reaching the finish line like warriors eager to return home. Well that they did! Our foes (with a couple of exceptions) apparently succumbed to allure and tarried along the way as we scampered by. When team results were announced, our M60+ and W50+ sailors celebrated their unexpected silver chalices!
Hear now the epic tale of the Shore AC men's age 60+ team. (Fear not! This is the Cliff Notes version, not a Homerian saga. :-)) Though our numbers were reduced by injury, family needs and other more tempting races, we managed to cobble together the minimum of three for a 60+ team. However, Father Time had eroded two of them down to "B" team speed. Thankfully, the third team member, namely rookie superstar Mark Zamek, had aged up to 60 two weeks prior. Talk about fortunate timing! Mark exulted, pressing his pace to red-line levels on his way to an historic 36:13 barn-burner. He beat all men on other 60+ teams by more than 30 seconds. Furthermore, he placed third in his 60-64 age group and fourth among men in age grading! But could Mark's teammates finish quickly enough to translate Mark's phenomenal time into a podium team performance? Mark stood roadside for minutes straining for a glimpse of them. Finally, fellow freshman Gary Wiesinger emerged from the dip in East Street and motored across the timing strip in a very solid 42:37. But what of our third man, venerable veteran Reno Stirrat? A nagging piriformis problem threatened his ability to even finish the race. Wait! There he came! Reno had kept it all together despite pain and pulled through for the team, registering a remarkable 43:48! But would the overall team score of 2:02:38 suffice to reach the podium? Not only did it suffice, but surprisingly it placed Shore AC second! We beat highly capable teams from HFC, Ann Arbor, Genesee Valley and Greater Lowell. Congratulations, gentlemen!

April 30, 2023, Dedham, MA: A dynamic Shore AC women's 50+ quintet celebrates their silver medal finish in the USATF Masters National 10K race. Left to right: Debi Brathwaite, Susan Stirrat, Leslie Nowicki, Suzanne La Burt and Ali Marzulla.
Consider now the intriguing tale of our lady mariners on the Shore AC women's 50+ team. Pre-race predictions by this team captain prognosticator actually indicated a SAC victory by a margin of more than 3 minutes over Genesee Valley. However, our gals faced severe headwinds. Human tornado Suzanne La Burt developed knee pain a couple of weeks earlier and debated whether to even race. First mate Ali Marzulla had spent much of last year sidelined and was still working her way back to full strength. Likely third scorer Debi Brathwaite -- another newcomer to the club -- had run the London Marathon only 7 days prior and suffered from blisters on her feet. Amazingly, they kept their ship upright and hit their target team time! Suzanne rocked the course in a tremendous 41:10, earning her the fourth best age grading among ladies. Ali hit her target with a superb 45:10. Debi then followed, somehow willing her sore legs and feet through the rolling 10K course in a magnificent 50:31. Seasoned sailor Susan Stirrat delivered potent insurance with a splendid 52:23, while dedicated crewmate Leslie Nowicki battled feelings of illness to finish in 1:01:21. So, with a team score of 2:16:51 in the books, wouldn't that suffice to win? As it turned out, nay. The ladies of Genesee Valley absolutely crushed it, bettering their projected team score by 5 minutes. That was enough to beat us by a mere minute! Nevertheless, we were happy to add a second-place score to our 2023 Grand Prix record. Magnificent job, ladies!
Amidst the sea spray, Shore AC also floated a men's 50+ team. Were it not for the rule in USATF Masters National LDR competition that limits a team to at most one out-of-region runner, we could have entered a more powerful 50+ squad. However, given the rule, we needed to slide 66-year-old Scott Linnell down to the SAC M50+ troupe in order to staff it with the minimum of two in-region runners. Dynamo Jeff Conston (our single allowed out-of-region runner) staked the team to a smashing start when he stormed across the finish line in 37:53. Our 50+ team captain Chris Rinaldi did his part, leaning wide off the bow of the boat to skim the foamy surf with a ferocious 40:14. But then came Scott, dragging behind like an anchor as he lugged his leaden legs across the finish line in 46:09. Despite our third man's slow time, the team nevertheless placed a decent eighth out of thirteen teams. Bravo, gents!
Individual Accomplishments
Owing to the afore-mentioned rule that limits teams to one out-of-region runner, we had two stalwart Shore AC athletes who, being residents of states other than New Jersey, had to race without team affiliation. Harry Pino employed a late-race surge to post a solid time of 46:04. Barry Blake, a resident of nearby Wellesley, race walked the hilly course in an incredible time of 1:11:03.
The Good Ship Shore AC sailed proudly in Dedham on race day, thanks to the many outstanding accomplishments of its crew. Hoist our banner for these heroes who placed among the top three in their age groups at this national race!
Clang the galley bell now for these Shore AC salts who hooked top-10 spots in their age groups!
