Near-Sweep for Shore AC on a Cold, Windswept Day
It was March Madness! Though the calendar indicated one day before Spring, Old Man Winter insisted on a parting shot. He nailed it, too. Swish! Rather, Whoosh! Early morning temperatures bottomed out at 25 degree Fahrenheit by the Great Swamp Refuge, borne by persistent winds out of the west-northwest. In fact, that biting breeze kept the air below freezing for most if not all of our race. Even a 15-minute delay in the start of the 15K Spring Distance Classic to 10:15 AM didn't budge the bugaboo. Few runners dared partake at the water stops, lest wet clothes add to their chilly misery.
Yet, in the end, the irrepressible warmth of Shore AC's harriers prevailed. Not only did our club tent repel the brutally cold winds, but, like delightful campfire air, our teams swirled to the top of the standings in practically every age group! Grab a snug seat by the fireplace as you sip on the sweet recounting below.
Shore AC's hearty youth lit the flame that started our wildfire success in this race. On the women's side, the Shore AC Open team scorched the field with a convincing victory. Though composed entirely of masters ladies over the age of 40, they outran the second-place team by more than an hour collectively as their five scorers beat all members of opposing teams. Karen dos Santos paved the way with her fluid 1:02:25. Lauren Jackson sailed along briskly in Karen's wake as she registered a superb 1:03:09. Next up for the "youngest" team was age-defying Suzanne La Burt. Though she turns 60 in May, Suzanne can still outrun a gazelle. Her 1:03:47 earned her the top age grading (90.3%) of all contestants with one exception. (That one exception was the incomparable Nat Larson. He drove 3 hours from his hometown of Amherst, Massachusetts, (where, incidentally, your truly spent his childhood) in an attempt to break the American 60-64 age group record. He purportedly missed it by 22 seconds.) Rookie Rebecca Keenan showed ample promise with her stellar 1:10:22. Ali Marzulla then completed her first race since recovering from injury, notching a solid 1:13:52 to wrap up team scoring. Necia McQueen backstopped the team with her excellent 1:21:02 clocking.
The performance gap was even more pronounced in the women's 40+ team competition. Shore AC's crew won by well over an hour collectively. While the trio of dos Santos, Jackson and Keenan cemented the team score, the team's all-important backup was insured by another triplet of runners. Newcomer Deborah Capko made her debut in a Shore AC singlet with her sparkling 1:19:47. After McQueen crossed, teammate Joanna Cunningham came in quickly from the cold with a brisk 1:22:26. Well done, ladies!
The competition became more intense in the 50+ team category. Though Shore AC still prevailed, its margin of victory shrank to only 20 minutes. Speedy La Burt spearheaded the SAC attack. Next in line was 60-year-old Kerry Monahan Gaughan, putting a winter bout with pneumonia squarely in the past as she laid down a magnificent 1:12:57. Marzulla then wrapped up team scoring, while Capko ensured team victory with her solid backup.
Shore AC also entered a women's 50+ B team. Led by Cunningham, it placed fourth in a field of nine teams. A trio of sixty-year-olds fleshed out this intrepid squad. Luz Ravines rolled out a truly impressive race, motoring across the finish line in a terrific 1:24:05. Last year's USATF National 65-69 Grand Prix champion Susan Stirrat followed close behind in 1:25:43 to close out team scoring and win the 65-69 age group in this race. Team success was ensured by Kathy Packowski when she hustled through the finish line in 1:42:23. Congratulations to the B team!
There is no question that Shore AC deployed a strong women's 60+ team in this race. We were marvelously represented by Monahan Gaughan, Ravines, Stirrat and Packowski. However, rival Fleet Feet / Essex got the better of us in this race with a superb group of ladies, edging us by a collective 8 minutes. Hats off to them! They were the only team to beat a Shore AC A team in this race, thus preventing a SAC clean sweep. And, hey, we still took second place among five 60+ teams. Brava, ladies!
Well, you ask, how did those hot Shore AC men's teams fare? Though the competition was intense, the guys engineered a clean sweep! They got the snowball rolling in the Open division with a solid 23-minute margin of victory. Greyhound Justin Scheid set the tone, sprinting off with the lead pack and eventually placing third overall (and first among everyone not name "El Jazouli") in a blink-and-you-missed-him time of 50:13. Billy Washer set the bar high as second Shore AC stud, shadowing the lead pack to place ninth overall in a scintillating 54:05. One minute later, teacher John Larkin schooled many of the star runners from other clubs with his 55:08 ace. Shore AC masters men took up the cause from there. Matt Coleman darted down the home stretch to trip the timer in a terrific 58:26 as fourth team scorer. Joe Maranzani followed close behind, nailing down team scoring with a triumphant 58:45. Insurance runners play a key role in team competition, and our Men's Open team sported several great ones. Chris Moye roared through with a blazing 58:52 as sixth man. It wasn't long before Mike Raples added a 1:30:30 as additional backup. Spring rookie Andrew Yearsley made his debut in a Shore AC singlet a memorable one, clocking a superb 1:06:29 that eclipsed the times for many scoring members of other Open teams. Hail to the victors!
The afore-mentioned Shore AC masters men played a huge role in vaulting our men's 40+ A team to victory in the 15K race. Coleman, Maranzani and Moye crunched the finish-line chute as the teams' 2-3-4 scorers, all with times of 58 minutes and change. Ah, but who, you ask, was our numero uno? None other than 55-year-old Jeff Conston, straight outta Compton -- well, ok, make that Hopewell Junction, New York. Jeff not only paced his age group, but he placed in the top ten in age grading with a scorching 81.66%. Fellow 50+ falcon Chris Rinaldi closed down team scoring with his soaring 1:03:36, while 59-year-old Terry Lusardi proffered first-class insurance with his brilliant 1:03:51.
Shore AC also had a men's 40+ B team in this dogfight. Once again, the 2-3-4 positions went to true 40-49 athletes. In this case, they were Raples, Yearlsey and Rich Riopel, whose 1:07:24 foray through the F-shaped course helped firm up the B team's position in the rankings. And, once again, it was a 50+ big dog who led the pack. 51-year-old Tim McQueen steered his way deftly down the country lanes to a smashing 1:02:10 result. Plus, just as before, a quinquagenarian wrapped up team scoring. 50-year-old Mike DiLeva recorded a rock-solid 1:07:39, officially placing the B team fourth out of nine squads in the 40+ field. Behind home base, we had even more 50+ athletes serving as backstops. 54-year-old John Delaney spun heads as he kicked across the finish line with a marvelous 1:09:58 showing. We also welcomed 59-year-old Army veteran Jeff Robinson on board. Jeff navigated the pain and torment of a 15K race in 1:37:16 to start his running career with Shore AC. Ten-hut!
The Shore AC machine kept on plowing through the field right into 50+ terrain. Here, too, we had A and B teams that placed #1 and #4, respectively. As you might imagine, Conston led the A team attack, with McQueen, Rinaldi and Lusardi stomping down the opposition behind him. The coup de grace was delivered by 61-year-old Kevin McCormack when he rocketed home in 1:05:38 as fifth team scorer. Soon thereafter, 67-year-old King of the Road Kevin Dollard stapled the win with his kick-butt insurance time of 1:06:39. The A teams' margin of victory was a comfortable16 cumulative minutes. Kudos, gents!
Let the accolades ring for the Shore AC men's 50+ B team, too! With DiLeva forging the path forward, 68-year-old national legend Reno Stirrat battled issues with his back -- forcing him to walk 4 times -- before willing himself across the finish line with an amazing time of 1:08:36. Fellow 65-69 age grouper Jamie Button surfed on Reno's wake, clocking a sail-billowing 1:09:17 to secure the third team scoring position. After Delaney cruised through as fourth team scorer, a struggling Scott Linnell crossed in 1:11:36, wondering how he will survive the upcoming Syracuse Half Marathon if he can barely run 9.3 miles. Despite Linnell's lumbering, the B team placed an excellent fourth out of seven teams. Robinson served as insurance runner, guaranteeing the team's good standing. Way to go, guys!
Come along for the ride as we drive into the men's 60+ domain. Shore AC has ruled the roost here for many years. Results of this race show that our pre-eminent position will continue: our A and B teams went 1-3. McCormack, Dollard, Stirrat and Button got the job done for the A team, fending off a potent team from NJ Pacers by a margin of 10 minutes. Our B team, led by that torpid Linnell, defeated seven other squads in the 60+ field. A quartet of septuagenarians carried the team onto the podium. Peter Auteri flashed mid-season form as he dashed through the chilly morn in 1:14:19 to secure third place in the 70-74 age group. Bill Bosmann wrapped up team scoring when he nailed a solid 1:20:05. Carl Richko contributed a fine 1:32:08 as first insurance runner, while race walker Eliot Collins tacked on his 2:37:47 for a good cause. Keep on keeping on, 60+ men!
Finally, we arrive in the field of 70+ men. Shore AC was the cream of the crop here as well. The jolly quartet of Auteri, Bosmann, Richko and Collins celebrated life and good health with a winning performance, 14 minutes in the lead. Bravo, gentlemen!
