Shore AC Ladies Run The Table at Terri Roemer 10K Race in Paramus
Shark warnings shook the early morning calm in the sleepy town of Paramus. Not the ocean species: nope, we're talking pool here. The ladies of Shore Athletic Club had sauntered into the joint and were daring the competition to bet the farm. We hope that their hapless foes had hedged their bets, because within an hour those bad-ass SAC babes had cleaned out whatever wasn't nailed down.
Those Shore AC sharpshooters were sinking balls like they were the second coming of Annie Oakley. The SAC ladies won the team competitions by wide margins in every age category from Open through 60+. Individually, they accounted for 6 of the first 7 speedsters to cross the finish line as well as the top finisher in every age group from 45-49 through 65-69. Bang! Bang!
But fear not, dear reader: it was all Monopoly money on the line. No farms were actually repossessed in this friendly competition. So grab a brew, settle onto your favorite barstool and read all about how the Shore AC women ran the table at the Terri Roemer 10K. Oh, and note that the pool hall monikers used below are entirely the invention of the author. They will surprise the ladies as much as they do you!
Let's begin our coverage of the team competition with the 60+ ladies. Leading her crew with an ever-deft touch, Nora "The Destroyer" Cary sunk a spectacular 44:59. That put her atop the age grading scoreboard in this race with a mind-frying 93.90%. Kerry "Lucky" Monahan-Gaughan stunned fans with her good Irish fortune when she showed up for this race -- a mere week after having poured her guts out in the Chicago Marathon. But her loyalty knows no bounds. Kerry banked a fabulous 50:28 to keep the team rolling toward victory. They pocketed first when Luz "Cues" Ravines striped the timing mat with a solid 53:49. Our glamorous gals hung a whopping 13-minute margin on the second-place team. Cool shooting, ladies!
The story was much the same with the Shore AC women's 50+ team. Leave it to Alysia "Pounce" Puma to lead their surprise attack. She leaped into the fray with a devastating 44:50 to draw first blood. After Cary struck as second team scorer, newcomer Maureen "Sheen" Massell flashed the coup de grace, lighting up the finish chute with a glittering 47:30. The team's remarkable 15-minute margin of victory left ample wiggle room for insurance runner Ravines. Well done, ladies!
Rinse and repeat! Over at the 40+ team table, the ladies in white singlets confounded all comers. Magician Suzanne "Shazam" La Burt set the stage for her rollicking crew, spinning a trick opening shot of 40:55 that left the spectators awestruck. Karen "Carom" dos Santos followed with a field-busting blast, scattering the competition with a table-turning 42:47. When rookie sensation Crissa "The Whistla'" Thurman ripped a 44:56 fireball into the corner pocket, she emphatically sealed the team's scoring. Once again, the Shore AC ladies had outdistanced the competition by 15+ minutes. Such domination! Running as backup along with Gaughan was Kim "Vim" Anicito. Her energetic 47:51 ensured her team's payday.
Suddenly, a roar erupted from the center of the room. At the Open table, a group of 7 Shore AC sharks sent the crowd into a frenzy. Liz "The Wiz" Campbell stroked a shot that will be talked about for years, hammering out a 39:40 to win her first race in a Shore AC uniform. Welcome to the team, Liz! Behind her, La Burt, dos Santos, Puma and Thurman finished 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th overall among women to overwhelm their competition. Their Open team's margin of victory was a stunning 20 minutes. Massell and Anicito added all-important backup. What an odds-smashing team performance!!!
