Shore AC Men Toot Their Horns at Ridgewood 10K Memorial Day Race
During World War II, The Andrews Sisters shot to fame with their hit song, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy". (Click here to listen, or here to hear Bette Midler's later rendition.) Just like the boys of Company B in the song, our Shore AC men jumped on the Ridgewood 10K race! Grab a seat, soldier, and tune in to these swingin' details.
Before the race even began, Shore AC men and women had hit the ground running with the first notes of Reveille. Using the Shore AC tent (which had popped up by 7:00 am) as a base, they jogged off in double time for a 2-mile warm-up. Back to home base by 8:00 am, they gathered for a company photograph. Then, after a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, they gathered behind the starting line for the commencement of a great Memorial Day tradition: the running of the Ridgewood 10K race. For the men, it was a USATF-NJ Team Championship race. For the women, it was an opportunity to collect valuable points in the USATF-NJ Individual Grand Prix.
Shore Athletic Club managed to enter a men's team in every age category from Open to 70+. Although the only Shore AC team that actually won their race was the 70+ squadron, every team did well enough to move into at least a tie for first place in the 2023 USATF-NJ Grand Prix. As they say, it's okay to lose some battles as long as you win the war!
Let begin our tale of triumph with those venerable septuagenarians. This talented trio was led by Peter Auteri. His outstanding time of 47:42 topped all 70+ runners with the exception of the incomparable Jimmy Linn. Bill Bosmann followed with a magnificent 49:05. good for fourth in the 70-74 age group. Newcomer Carl Richko polished off the victory when he crossed in 58:51 with nearly 3 minutes to spare over second-place Fleet Feet Essex. Bravo, gentlemen!
As for the 60+ division, our Shore AC team got shocked. Accustomed to winning every race, it got upended by surprisingly strong teams from Fleet Feet Essex and Clifton. Now, a sharp-eyed reader would observe that we *COULD* have won had we assigned superstar Rick Lee to the team. True, but that would have meant winning the 60+ battle at the expense of possibly losing the wars in the 50+ and 40+ age groups. Instead, our ace sharpshooter Mike Salamone formed the vanguard of our 60+ A team. He fired a spectacular 40:20 to launch our attack. But a minefield of trouble lurked behind Mike. Highly decorated harrier veteran (and high-achieving former Marine) Reno Stirrat staggered to the sidelines near Mile 2, felled by his persnickety piriformis. With Reno's potentially excellent race now out of the picture, the fate of our 60+ A team lay at the feet of three compromised teammates. Poor Harry Pino had barely avoided being struck by a speeding car the week before and banged himself up in a last-second dive. Aging runners Jamie Button and Scott Linnell just couldn't resist competing in the Spring Lake 5 Mile race two days prior and now had sore leg muscles. Harry overcame his aches and pains to deliver an impressive 46:47. Jamie followed seconds later in 47:01 to complete team scoring, while Scott lumbered in right behind in 47:07 to offer backup. It all added up to a third-place finish. Nevertheless, we continue to hold first place in the USATF-NJ Grand Prix for 60+ teams by a comfortable margin.
Meanwhile, the afore-mentioned 70+ crew, along with race director extraordinaire Dan Murphy, formed a solid 60+ B team. They collected useful Club Grand Prix points by placing fifth within a field of eight teams. Well done, gents!
Buckle up now as we recount the feats of our Shore AC men's 50+ team. Spearheaded by The Mighty Lee and Sensational Salamone, the company came within 23 seconds of beating Clifton for second place. Terry Lusardi gave it his all on this warm, sunny day as he crossed in 42:20. Mike DiLeva paddled with all his might for the team, notching a 46:40. Button wrapped up team scoring, while Linnell and Murphy provided insurance. Remarkably, despite taking third in this race, our 50+ squad maintained its lead in the Grand Prix with a comfortable cushion. Congratulations, boys!
The Shore AC men's 40+ team ran into an even more intense battle. Highly talented teams from Garden State and Freedom-Garmin put those two teams out of reach. The question was whether we could repel Clifton for third place. Having Lee up front gave Shore AC an excellent start. Powerhouse Joe Maranzani strengthened Shore AC's case with an outstanding time of 38:54. Speedster Chris Moye added wonderful harmony with his 40:01. Lively syncopation was added by Mike Raples as he tooted his horn in 41:54. The music stopped when Lusardi crossed the finish line 26 seconds later to wrap up team scoring and hand third place to Shore AC by a margin of 2 minutes. Freshman SAC member Andrew Yearsley added spice with his 43:33 as first insurance runner, with DiLeva and Pino providing additional backstop. Since Shore AC's men's 40+ team had been in a tie with Clifton for first place in the Grand Prix, this race put Shore AC 1 point ahead of Clifton for sole possession of first place. Bravo, men!
It was in the Open division where our battle of the bands reached a crescendo. The winner was never in doubt, however, as perpetual champion Garden State claimed 5 of the first 7 finishers in the race. But would Shore AC have the flourish to finish second? Band leader Justin Scheid got the team In The Mood with a swinging 32:41, good for fourth place individually. Brassy Billy Washer blew his trumpet fortissimo as he blasted down the finish chute in 34:39. Great Greg Leddy serenaded saxophone-style with his sweet 35:59. Masterful Mark Minervini extended his legs like an expert trombonist to snare a tremendous 36:38. (Fifth U40 guy John Larkin started the race but dropped out after 2 miles due to lingering fatigue from a week-long illness.) Blend in fifth man Maranzani, plus backups Moye, Raples and Yearsley, and presto! Shore AC snared second place by a considerable 14 minutes. Hooray, team!

May 29, 2023, Ridgewood, NJ: Rick Lee and Laura DeLea demonstrate that runners, like musicians, know how to kick back and relax after a big performance.
