May 13, 2023, Berkeley Heights, NJ: A happy Shore AC crew displays the USATF-NJ Grand Prix banner after a well-run race. Takin' Care of Business: Shore AC Train's On Time at Our House 4 Miler
Long ago, before internet, there was no working from home. If you worked, you commuted. A 1970's band called Bachman Turner Overdrive deftly captured that rat race feeling in their hit song "Takin' Care of Business":
You get up every morning
From the alarm clock's warning
Take the eight fifteen into the city...
And if your train's on time
You can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay...
Fast forward to 2023, and here we internet-savvy modernists were commuting to a corporate office park -- not to work, but to have some fun! Some of us doubted that such a setting would work for a USATF-NJ championship race. How, we wondered, could one fit a 4-mile course into what seemed a small area? The course map made us even more dubious. There were multiple loops and hairpin turns. How were the course marshals ever going to prevent "in-the-zone" runners from mistakenly going off-course? Thankfully, the course was laid out masterfully and no one appeared to take a wrong turn.
With course concerns put to rest, us Shore AC harriers got to work. Yes, we were "takin' care of business". The Shore AC ladies even made it look pretty! Before the race, newcomer Debi Brathwaite was live on the air with CBS meteorologist John Elliott, celebrating the fine weather and good cause. Then, the Shore AC gals dashed around the corporate park as if playing hookie. Debi and her age 60+ teammates did well, bowing only to mighty Fleet Feet Essex. (Just wait until June!) After Debi's fine 33:28 got the party started, Susan Stirrat delivered a superb 34:15 to win her 65-69 age group by more than 2 minutes! Luz Ravines wrapped up team scoring with a nifty 36:53, giving her team a several-minute cushion over third-place Clifton. Leaving nothing to chance, 76-year-old Barbara Donelik rocked a magnificent 37:59 as insurance runner to not only win her age group but place fifth among masters women in age grading!
The Shore AC women's 50+ team took care of business like Wall Street professionals. It wasn't even close. The team average of 29:53 topped second place Fleet Feet Essex by more than 2 minutes. The incomparable Suzanne La Burt tore through the course like an entrepreneurial wunderkind, notching a phenomenal time of 26:34 while achieving the top age grading by far among all masters runners. Meanwhile, teammate Ali Marzulla impressed the crowd with her outstanding kick into the finish line as she nailed a superb 29:37. With Brathwaite, Stirrat and Ravines polishing off the team's golden performance, SAC investors cheered the W50+ team's victory with gusto!
That industrious streak blossomed in the Shore AC women's 40+ team as well. A torrid average finish time of 27:06 outdistanced second-place Raritan Valley by over 4 minutes! Leading lady Karen dos Santos set the pace, tripping the timer in a terrific 26:01 to place second overall among women. Fellow quadragenarian Lauren Jackson ripped a roaring 26:19 to secure third place among all female finishers. The team's soaring stock shot the moon when Rebecca Keenan flew across the timing strips in 28:57. That was good enough to place first in Rebecca's 45-49 age group. Success was firmly secured when first insurance runner Kim Anicito slammed the door on the competition with a searing 30:53, good for a 7:43 per mile average on a challenging course. Donelik provided a second level of insurance for this stunning team. Well done, ladies!
Entrepreneurial spirit propelled the Shore AC women's Open team to glory as well. They had to work for it, as rival Raritan Valley claimed the fourth, fifth and seventh overall female finishers on their way to a sub-30-minute team average. But Shore AC was better. All 5 of its scorers -- dos Santos, Jackson, La Burt, Keenan and Marzulla -- came in under 30 minutes, and backstop Anicito came within a minute of that key time. Average team time was 27:30. The team's margin of victory might have been greater had disaster not struck our U40 ace Kerry Dyke. Her asthma does not mix well with a warm spring day. Halfway through the race, while in first place by a comfortable margin, Kerry suffered an attack. Starved of oxygen, she fell, cutting open her knee. Her race was over. But you can bet that Kerry will be BAAAAAACKKKK!!!

What about those hardworking Shore AC men? We could almost hear them singing this lilt.
If it were easy as fishin'
You could race 'em with a mission
If you could run until your muscles turn to Jello.
Get some shoes called Vaporfly
Chances are you'll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows!
Our men's 60+ quartet got into rhythm right away. Running up-tempo, they unexpectedly vanquished an intimidating 60+ crew from Freedom-Garmin. Supersonic missile Mike Salamone sped to the front of the men's 60+ field and stayed there to the end. His scintillating time of 25:56 eclipsed the second 60+ man's score by more than 30 seconds. Club veteran Carl Gensib flashed fine form in spinning a superb 27:39. Nationally acclaimed Reno Stirrat kept his piriformis under control through the many tight turns, uphills and downhills to register an amazing 28:48. Kevin McCormack battled calf pain that compelled him to walk several stretches. Even so, he managed a respectable 30:17 in a backup role. Kudos to our old-but-bold gents!
Shore AC had enough men to enter a 60+ B team. However, this team captain somehow forgot about himself when formulating the 60+ teams. As a consequence, solid races by septuagenarians Paul Deykerhoff (35:51) and Carl Richko (37:54) went to waste. Had Scott Linnell (29:37) been more on top of his coordinating game, our B team would have placed sixth in a field of nine teams.
Now, let's return to the good stuff. Even more astounding than our 60+ A team victory was our men's 50+ conquest. They beat an all-star line-up from Freedom-Garmin (plus another five teams). With Salamone carrying the SAC flag in front, a galloping foursome of SAC 50+ horsemen followed right behind, thundering through the finish chute all in under 27 minutes. Their tight pack was just enough to shave Freedom-Garmin by 43 seconds. And who were these dashing daredevils? None other than the great Chris Rinaldi (26:05), Kevin Sroka (26:07), Terry Lusardi (26:57) and Scott Isgett (26:59)! For Kevin, this was his first Grand Prix team championship race. Great to have you aboard, Kevin! Backing up our scorers were a set of outstanding yeomen: Gensib, MIke DiLeva (30:08), McCormack and Jeff Robinson (37:46). Bravo, guys!
Shore AC's younger teams struggled from a lack of youth. Our only fresh face under 50 was 42-year-old Andrew Yearsley. He did his part, crafting a quick 28:14 to place fourth in the 40-44 age group. When combined with Rinaldi, Lusardi, Isgett and DiLeva, our 40+ team placed a very respectable third within a field of seven teams. Even our Open team, with Sroka, Yearsley, Robinson and ancients Stirrat and Linnell, out-performed expectations by notching fifth within a field of nine teams. Kudos to both teams!
