Small Shore AC Cast Stages Broadway-style Performance at Haworth 5K Race
Oh, the irony! After inundating the By Hook Or By Crook 12K race with a flood of Shore AC athletes and teams, here we were two weeks later marooned with a skeleton crew for the Haworth 5K men's team championship race. Moreover, all but one of our guys was over the age of 50. How could we possibly enter Open and 40+ teams?
Perhaps we were caught in a Hamlet-esque tragedy. After all, a fickle storm named Ophelia had upset our tranquility not once but twice. She had washed out the entire preceding weekend, and now a week later her remnants were drowning New York City. She was even continuing to spit rain into the suburbs on race day. Who wouldn't ask, "To race or not to race?"
But, to do the expected and enter old-age teams would have poisoned our opportunities for Grand Prix glory in the Open and 40+ categories. So we pulled a surprise instead. We grouped together our best five harriers -- four of whom were over the age of 50 -- and made them the heart of our Open and 40+ teams. That made all the difference!
The strategy paid off. Our Open and 40+ teams both notched second place at Haworth. In doing so, they preserved Shore AC's slender Grand Prix leads in those age groups. Our dashing defenders were led by 46-year-old Joe Maranzani. He sprinted to a superb 17:51 clocking that earned him a top-10 finish. Mike Salamone brought the house to its feet with a smashing 18:54, thereby putting the 63-year-old atop the age grading charts with a gob-smacking score of 86.2%. Next came Chris Rinaldi, who rocketed home in 19:21. Brian Bragg celebrated his recent return to racing with a magnificent 19:31 as fourth scorer. The quintet was completed by 60-year-old Terry Lusardi, whose terrific 20:15 made the squad competitive. Their average time of 19:10 placed Shore AC ahead of Clifton (but behind Racefaster) in the Open category and just a handful of seconds behind winner Clifton in the 40+ category. A healed-up Bob Shields ran an excellent 21:33 to provide all-important insurance for the Open team, while Carl Richko added a backstop for the 40+ team with him 27:21.
You might wonder what ammunition we had remaining for 50+ and 60+ teams. Well, we had just enough firepower to nail second place in those age groups, too! Talented 63-year-old rookie Mike Connolly led the charge for our 50+ team. He sliced through the sputtering drizzle to cross the finish line in 21:29. Shore AC spectators continued their cheering as Shields roared through the chute 4 seconds later. Huzzahs erupted anew when Scott Linnell chugged home close behind in 21:47, followed very soon thereafter by Reno Stirrat in 21:58. Septuagenarian Ken Wilson wrapped up 50+ team scoring with a very solid 23:01. Bill Bosmann ensured team success with a backup contribution of 23:41. As for the 60+ squad, Connolly, Linnell and Stirrat scored while Peter Auteri added a fourth-man guarantee with his 2-day-old-stitches-limited 23:24. (His doctor now understands the dedication with which we runners pursue our sport!)
The sweet taste of victory was savored by our Shore AC men's 70+ team. Wilson, Auteri and Bosmann, with Richko as insurance agent, absolutely dominated the competition with a 22-minute margin of victory. Bravo, gentlemen!
