Shore AC Shakes and Bakes at the Thanksgiving Day Ashenfelter 8K Race
Tradition: we savor it every Thanksgiving. Details may vary from family to family -- the menu, the toasts and the activities -- but we all relish this uniquely American holiday. Many exercise lovers squeeze in a morning "turkey trot" race among their Thanksgiving rituals. One such race in New Jersey, namely the Ashenfelter 8K, draws thousands. And well it should! It honors New Jersey running legend Horace Ashenfelter, who won the gold medal in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase at the 1952 Olympics. Begun in or around 2002, the race has become a tradition thanks to the expert leadership of Shore AC's own Dan Murphy as race director extraordinaire.
Shore AC did its part to honor tradition by scoring well in USATF-NJ team competition aspect of the 8K race. Grab a drumstick and read all about it below!
Let's begin with those feisty Shore AC women, in particular the 60+ ladies. As Alicia Keys would say, these girls were on fire! Within a field of seven team, our W60+ A and B teams went 1-2. The A team was led by our two world-class speedsters Suzanne La Burt and Nora Cary. Suzanne scorched the course in 32:02 and annihilated her 60-64 age group competition by nearly 7 minutes. As you might imagine, Suzanne's age grading equated to a jaw-dropping 93.89%, good for third among all runners in the race. It was bested only by the great Roberta Groner and by...her teammate Nora. Mom Cary motored to a stunning time of 34:35. Given her 68 years of age, Nora's age grading equaled an almost incomprehensible 96.71%. (Perhaps Nora knows if this counts as a new American record. I can't tell because the USATF records web site is currently down.) Teammate Diane Rothman completed A team scoring in style with a scintillating 37:59 clocking. That ranked Diane third among all women of age 60 or over. It also gave the 65-year-old a magnificent age grading of 84.53%. For good measure, Kerry Monahan Gaughan backed up her teammates with a superb 39:49, which was fifth fastest among 60+ ladies. Our A team average of 34:52 per runner far exceeded the rest of the W60+ teams. Well done, ladies!
It is a testimony to our club's depth in age 60+ women that we could not only field a second team, but that this B team would place second among seven teams! Debi Brathwaite demonstrated her complete recovery from injury with a dynamite time of 40:45 to pace the B-team trio. Defending two-time USATF National Grand Prix 65-69 Champion Susan Stirrat scurried down the ending chute in 42:51 as second team scorer. But now suspense began to build. Where was third scorer Luz Ravines? She had been battling sciatic nerve pain for several weeks. Nothing, however, would stop Luz from showing up for her team. Despite the pain, she willed herself across the finish line in a very respectable 44:37. That gave the B team a 30-second cushion of third-place Clifton. Brava, ladies!
Shore AC possessed adequate depth to enter two women's 50+ teams as well. But the 50+ field of 16 teams posed far more intense competition than the 60+ age group. Nevertheless, our ladies in white, blue and red performed tremendously, with the A team achieving second place and the B team snaring sixth place. Sophomore sensation Christie Nie spearheaded the A team's charge with a spectacular time of 32:57. After Cary checked in as second finisher, freshman phenom Maureen Massell polished off team scoring with her scintillating 36:38. Rothman provided all-important insurance. This quartet came within 4 minutes of Garden State Track Club's formidable 50+ team. They also outdistanced third-place Fleet Feet Essex by a whopping 12 minutes. Superbly done!
The Shore AC women's 50+ B team featured four of our afore-mentioned 60+ ladies. Monahan Gaughan, Brathwaite, Stirrat and Ravines combined their considerable talents to place sixth. That put the foursome ahead of ten teams and within a minute of Raritan Valley's A team. Terrific!
Moving now to the more youthful 40+ age category, we see from results that the competition skyrocketed. The core of that competition wore Garden State Track Club uniforms. In fact, the GSTC A team posted a per-runner average of 29:48 that could win a national race. Their B team cooked as well, forging a ferocious 32:12 average. Against this backdrop, an excellent Shore AC women's 40+ team was fortunate to make the podium with a third-place finish. Karen dos Santos led the way, fighting off lingering leg pains to reach paydirt in 32:37. With teammate Nie only 20 seconds behind, the team got off to a fantastic 1-2 start. Rebecca Keenan celebrated her return to racing after many months off due to a stress fracture by crossing in 35:03 to close out team scoring. Backup insurance was provided by Massell and a solid effort from Kim Anicito in 38:36.
With the 40+ field being so competitive, you can imagine how hot the women's open scene was. And yes, most of the top runners wore GSTC garb. But Shore AC had a trio of torchbearers light up the standings, too. First within that trio was Amanda Eller, whose brilliant 30:16 placed her second in the 30-39 age group and seventh overall among women. Fifteen seconds later, rookie Liz Campbell ripped a roaring 30:31. That was good for fourth in the 30-39 age group and tenth overall. A mere 5 seconds later, Emma Cary made her debut in a Shore AC singlet one to remember by nailing a magnificent time of 30:36. That placed Emma fourth in the 20-29 age group. Masters-age runners La Burt and dos Santos completed team scoring, while Keenan and Anicito contributed backup. The masterpiece that these outstanding ladies cooked took second place, beating Garden State's potent B team. Hooray!!!

Hooray!!!

How about the Tom Turkeys, a.k.a. the Shore AC men? They gobbled up the course like it was stuffed with apple pie and ice cream! Let's indulge in their results, starting with the 70+ men.
Our septuagenarian harriers fought a furious battle with their contemporaries from Fleet Feet Essex and four other 70+ teams. Shore AC came out on top! Steady strider Pete Auteri scooted through the suburban course in 38:07 to place third in his 70-74 age group. Teammate Bill Bosmann stalked close behind Peter to add a superb 38:32 to team team's score. Carl Richko completed the victory when he crossed in 45:09, giving the team a 54-second edge over second-place Essex. Race walker Eliot Collins added insurance with his 1:24:26. Congratulations on the win, you great graybeards!
Meanwhile, the big birds in the 60+ team competition ran like velociraptors. Rookie sensation Mark Zamek streaked through Glen Ridge to an inconceivable 28:03, breaking the American age 60-64 record by 3 seconds. (However, Nat Larson of Amherst, Massachusetts, ran an even faster 27:46 and will now hold the new road 8K American record.) Terry Lusardi notched a speedy 33:03 to place second, while Jamie Button cruised to a 36:21 to complete team scoring. Our per-man time of 32:29 was unfortunately eclipsed by Fleet Feet Essex, so on this day our A team settled for second place. Had our ace hawk, Rick Lee, not been sidelined by hamstring pain, the team order would likely have flipped. But that's how it goes in our sport!
The Shore AC M60+ B team accorded itself well by placing fourth within the field of fourteen 60+ teams. Living legend Reno Stirrat set the pace with a strong 35:06. Rob Neugass continued his hot streak of beating the team captain with a marvelous 35:53. Said captain, Scott Linnell, waddled across the timing mat in 35:59 to finish off team scoring. Collins served as backstop. Well done, B team!
We even entered a C team in the 60+ field. It consisted of the 70+ old crows Auteri, Bosmann and Richko. They performed superbly, finishing eighth and beating A teams from three other clubs. Bravo, gentlemen!
Feathers flew in the brawl that they called the men's 50+ team competition at Ashenfelter. Brian Bragg was our lead rooster, flapping wings mightily on his way to a vicious 31:50. Tim McQueen dove straight into the melee as well and smashed down a great time of 32:33 as second scorer. After Lusardi snared the #3 spot, commercial pilot Scott Isgett glided to a perfect landing in 34:17 while Bob Shields alit seconds later in 34:25 to wrap up team scoring. Stirrat and Neugass strengthened the team nest by weaving in their backup times. When the dust settled, Shore AC had landed on the podium in third place. Well done, flock!
Claws came out in the 40+ team rumble -- at least for second place. Predictably, Garden State prevailed with nary a scratch. But Shore AC tussled with Fleet Feet, Garmin and Clifton in a four-way scrum for second place. Newcomer Marc Blanco landed our first blow with a heroic 28:40. Great to have you aboard the Good Ship Shore AC, Marc!!! Fellow quadragenarian Joe Maranzani lit up the scoreboard with a spectacular 29:10 as the #2 man. When Bragg, McQueen and Isgett finished, the fight for second place was over -- and Shore AC had won! Shields and 40+ Antonio Meza Soriano (35:45) backstopped this rollicking crew. It was close, though. We nipped Fleet Feet by a mere 20 seconds and Garmin by less than 1 minute. You did it, boys!
To fare well in a men's open team competition, one requires real U40 speed. Regrettably, Shore AC lacked young studs at Ashenfelter. We scraped together a squad that consisted of masters guys, but it didn't stand a chance at a podium finish. Zamek led our futile charge, followed by Blanco, Maranzani, Meza Soriano and Linnell with Button as backup. We did manage to place sixth out of eleven teams. Hey, that ain't bad! Bravo, men!
