May 21, 2022, Rochester, NY: Energizing team check-in with their bubbly enthusiasm, the ladies of the Shore AC W50+ team hold still momentarily for a photo. Left to right: Leslie Nowicki, Susan Stirrat, Ali Marzulla, Suzanne La Burt and Laura DeLea. Two hours later, they darted through downtown Rochester with determination, finishing with an outstanding average time of 6:08. That was good enough to capture third place in an amazingly competitive field.
Shore AC Clicks at Shutter-Quick Rochester Mile
Quick: what do you think of when you hear the name of the city Rochester, New York? If "cold and snow" come to mind, you're not alone. But you should also think "Eastman Kodak". After all, the company is headquartered in Rochester. And while Gotham partisans might scoff that, if you blink, you'll miss the downtown while driving through, there is actually a fair amount to see and do in town...like run a USATF Masters National One Mile Road Race!
Yes, smack dab in the heart of town, and just upriver from where they brew Genesee Cream Ale, twenty thirsty members of Shore Athletic Club raced with gusto. What a picture it made! Let's bring those Shore AC athletes and their teams into sharper focus.
Shore AC Women's 50+ Team
The Shore AC women's 50+ team came to the Rochester Mile knowing that, if it placed third or better, it would secure a spot in the 2022 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. However, the other strong teams were entered. We knew that beating two of them, namely Greater Philadelphia and Garden State, was unlikely. However, Atlanta seemed beatable on paper. That paper analysis held true: we placed third by a comfortable margin. In fact, we weren't all that far behind Garden State. A somewhat ill Suzanne La Burt led the way for Shore AC, powering through with a superb 5:58 to start our scoring. Freshman sensation Ali Marzulla crossed the finish line next for Shore AC with a stellar time of 6:09 in her first-ever mile race. Veteran roadster Laura DeLea brought SAC team scoring to a close with a steady-as-she-goes 6:19. (Note: now that Laura is beginning to feel like herself again after suffering COVID after-effects, *WATCH OUT*!) Providing effective backup were Susan Stirrat in 7:32 and Leslie Nowicki in 7:58. Both were excellent times, especially considering how challenging the course was.

May 21, 2022, Rochester, NY: A jolly trio known as the Shore AC men's 50+ team enjoy some shade as they ponder the upcoming stampede. Left to right: Scott Linnell (age 65), Chris Rinaldi and Jeff Conston.
Shore AC Men's 50+ Team
Call them the stealth squad. The Shore AC men's 50+ team has been quietly crawling their way up the ranks of the USATF Masters National Grand Prix standings. Having latched onto the scoreboard with a nice fourth=place finish at the Half Marathon in Syracuse, good for 70 points, they collected another 45 points with an eighth place finish at the 10K in Dedham. Here is Rochester, as in Dedham, the team lacked a third legitimate 50s fellow. The solution? Take an excess 60s deck-swabber and move him down to the 50s team so it would have the minimum of three athletes for a team. That is how truly fast quinquagenarians Jeff Conston and Chris Rinaldi got saddled with a slowpoke like 65-year-old Scott Linnell. Jeff gave the team a tremendous start, roaring through the finishing chute in a scorching time of 5:07. Chris kept the team's momentum rolling with a fine 5:38 clocking. However, Scott's plodding 5:58 spelled doom for the trio. We placed seventh. But, hey, we still beat three other 50+ teams. Plus, the 50 points that we earned boosted the team to 165 points in the Grand Prix standings, ggod for a surprising seventh place. Keep it up, gents!

May 21, 2022, Rochester, NY: The super-fortified Shore AC men's 60+ A team beams with confidence after team check-in. Left to right: Kevin Dollard, Mike Salamone, Henry Notaro and Rick Lee. They would scamper to sweet victory and a possible national record age group time of 5:17 per man.
Shore AC Men's 60+ A Team
Things don't get much more picture-perfect than this. A week before the Rochester race, teammate Rick Lee announced that he had persuaded a Henry Notaro from South Jersey to join Shore AC. Henry, it turned out, was pretty good. So good, in fact, that he transformed the Shore AC men's 60+ "A" team from a close contender to a juggernaut.
Both Henry and Rick vied for the lead in the age 60-64 category during the Rochester Mile. Joseph Mora of the host Genesee Valley Harriers managed to pull ahead of Rick and Henry at the finish to post an amazing 5:05. Rick zoomed through one second later with an incredible 5:06 clocking. Henry, in his first race for Shore AC, stormed the finish line in a jaw-dropping 5:08. Add a blazing 5:36 from Mike Salamone and you had a dominating win by our boys in white. Backup beastie Kevin Dollard kept the team on fire with his crackling 5:48 performance. The team's overall time of 15:50 might be the best ever for an age 60+ team in the USATF Masters National competition. It certainly brightened the outlook for the team's prospects in the 2022 Grand Prix, in which they now occupy second place will 440 out of a possible 500 points.

May 21, 2022, Rochester, NY: Members of the Shore AC men's 60+ B team relax as they await the start of the Mile. Left to right: Harry Pino, Reno Stirrat and Hal Leddy.
Shore AC Men's 60+ B Team
As mentioned above, Shore AC brought sexagenarians to spare to the Rochester Mile. So, we entered a men's 60+ "B" team. Such is the fickle nature of the sport that an imaginary snapshot of this trio several years ago would have depicted elite runners at the top of their sport. Unfortunately, injury and age take their toll. Hal Leddy led the charge for the B team, crossing the chip detectors in 6:18 with delight that his working parts all held together. Harry Pino followed soon thereafter in 6:37, a mere 6 days after suffering mild heat stroke in the Superhero Half Marathon. Finally, with a profile in courage, Reno Stirrat limped across the finish line in 8:30 on a painful hamstring, knowing that his teammates needed him to complete the course in order for the team to score. There you have it: the very picture of team loyalty!

May 21, 2022, Rochester, NY: A merry quartet of Shore AC 70+ harriers mugs for the camera. Left to right: Harry Nolan, John Kuhi, Spider Rossiter and Przemek Nowicki.
Shore AC Men's 70+ Team
These guys are old enough to remember the Polaroid Land camera, which pioneered instant photography. While their legs might not turn over as quickly as they did in younger years, they can still "develop" a pretty good scene. Relative youngster Spider Rossiter snapped a quick 6:50 to bring the team into focus. Next to enter the picture was Przemek Nowicki, still spry at age 77, who scooted down the chute in 7:24. Nationally renowned Harry Nolan closed the shutter on team scoring when he crossed in 8:07, certainly a slower mark than he anticipated. The team's insurance policy was filed by Coach John Kuhi when he crossed in 11:09. Our septuagenarians placed fifth. That gave the team a nice 60-point injection in the Grand Prix standings, where they now occupy eighth place with 115 points. Keep it rolling, men!
