February 26, 2022, Atlanta, GA: Time to celebrate! Members of the Shore AC men's 60+ team beam for the cameras while displaying their second-place plaque. Left to right: Scott Linnell, Kevin Dollard, Rick Lee and Reno Stirrat.
Mid-Day Planes to Georgia
In the midst of a cruel winter storm, they got on board. Yes, the Club Cross Country Meet last December had been tough. So, they sought a faster racing style in a different space and time. And they got on board the mid-day planes to Georgia. Woo-woo! And left the ice and snow behind!
Feeling pippy, fourteen members of our swinging Shore Athletic Club flew down to friendly Atlanta for the USATF Masters National 5K Road Race. They assembled on the starting line, united into three teams and ready to run with heart and soul. Five ladies comprised a fiery women's 50+ team. Four old guys formed a men's 60+ squad, while a trio of even older fogies constituted the Shore AC men's 70+ platoon. As if channeling Gladys Knight, each of us felt a rhythm and got into a groove as the race commenced.
A nice groove it was! The men’s 60+ team placed 2nd. Rick Lee (3rd 60-64, 18:05) paced our squad, battling Genesee Valley’s Joseph Mora (1st 60-64, 18:01) and Boulder’s Tim Degrado (2nd 60-64, 18:05) right down the final stretch. Kevin Dollard (3rd 65-69, 19:57) matched his time on the course from 4 years ago. Reno Stirrat (20:35) completed our team scoring while struggling to breathe post-COVID. Scott Linnell provided insurance in 20:42. By the way, those are gun times; chip times are of course better. 😉
Meanwhile, our 50+ women rocked onto the podium in third place. Laura DeLea led the way, streaking to a 21:53 finish. Alysia Puma celebrated being in a new age group with a terrific 21:59. Nora Cary (2nd 65-69, 22:44) wrapped up team scoring as she works her way back into top running shape. Susan Stirrat (26:17) and Leslie Nowicki (29:19) completed the quintet.
The Shore AC men’s 70+ team finished 5th. Przemek Nowicki crossed first in 26:53. Stan Edelson (2nd 80-84, 29:35) notched the second spot while Coach John Kuhi (38:49) nailed down the final scoring position.
Representing Shore AC individually were Jeff Conston (54, 18:18) and Harry Pino (62, 22:22).
Next up on the USATF National Masters LDR Grand Prix calendar is the half marathon in Syracuse on March 20. So far, we have these teams entered: M40+, M60+ and W50+.
