Humidity Saps Shore AC Superhero Powers at Half Marathon
This just in from the Daily Planet: a sudden surge of humid air tested our valiant Shore AC runners in the Superhero Half Marathon like no galactic force ever has. One witness said, "It was like kryptonite, slowly sucking the vital energy out of our superheroes." Holy Haze! Nonetheless, most of our Superheroes persevered through the oppressive atmosphere, fulfilling their mission with fortitude. That was especially true of the Shore AC women's teams, which won every age group from Open through 60+!
Let's begin our dashing account of derring-do with the Shore Athletic Club's women's 60+ team. Flying at the fore for this fearless trio was Nora Cary. Gifted with cosmic talent to run and to nurse the ill, this SAC star led all racers in age grading at 89.33%. Such was the power of her phenomenal time of 1:42:11 at age 67. Arrayed to Nora's right was courageous companion Diane Rothman. No stranger to tropical climes, Diane sallied forth to a ferocious 1:50:42 finish. Completing this potent trident was road warrior Luz Ravines. Not one to shrink from a challenge, Luz battled through ankle soreness to nail a clocking of 2:26:21. That was good enough to beat Fleet Feet's W60+ team by 17 minutes. Well done, ladies!
No foe could withstand the Shore AC women's 50+ A team that contended this event. Galactic gladiator Suzanne La Burt hacked her way through thickets of lactic acid to lead the charge with an astounding 1:31:16. Dynamic cohort Ali Marzulla deftly maneuvered through willpower traps to achieve a spectacular 1:37:36. She was joined on the team scoring podium by Alysia Puma, whose superb 1:38:54 stunned the residents of Gotham. Add backup by Cary, and no other team stood a chance. POW!!!
Our ladies in white were numerous enough that we managed to enter a second women's 50+ team. It was a jolly threesome that included Rothman, Ravines and 50+ roadster Joanna Cunningham. Her solid 2:04:05 performance ensured a third-place team finish that garnered 5 valuable points for the club. Hooray for the B team!
Shore AC prowess shone brilliantly in the women's 40+ team category. Our teams went 1-2, winning by comfortable margins. The Shore AC W40+ "A" team featured La Burt plus young speedsters Karen dos Santos (1:31:32) and Lauren Jackson (1:32:39) with Marzulla as backup. Their average time of 1:31:49 simply dazzled the admiring crowds.
Meanwhile, with Puma leading the way for the Shore AC W40+ "B" squad, quadragenarians Karyn Baig (1:40:01) and Necia McQueen (1:57:04) delivered knockout punches that secured second place on the team podium. It helped that Cunningham was there to provide insurance in case any of the top three faltered in the fight. Thanks to their silver medal performance, this "B" team racked up 8 points for the club. Hot carbon fiber!
Shore AC's dominance extended to the women's open category at the Superhero Half Marathon. Freshman phenom Erika Meling got the ball rolling, continuing her stellar season with a ridiculous 1:27:30 that ranked her fourth among all women in the race. After dos Santos, Jackson and Baig crossed, veteran Shore AC denizen Chirstine Arsego found her running legs again in 1:43:45 after a hiatus from the sport. With McQueen playing backstop, this team was bound for success!

May 15, 2022, Morris Township, NJ: Spirits high as they await the starting gun, these Shore AC stallions stay loose. Left to right: Mike Salamone, Carl Gensib and Nolan McCarty. Chris Moye stands calmly behind Salamone and Gensib.
As for the Shore AC men, it was a tough day at the office and phone booth. They endured intense competition and suffered more from the steamy air. The Shore AC 60+ men's "A" team did score a victory, though. Rabbit Mike Salamone kicked off the team's efforts with a booming 1:28:57, placing him second overall among men in age grading with 81.63%. Longtime SAC headliner Carl Gensib made his first race of 2022 count with a scintillating 1:37:06. Harry Pino nailed down the team victory with his remarkable 1:49:22, which was achieved despite dizziness from early stages of heat stroke. It took Herculean effort for Harry to stay focused through the last few miles. He paid for it afterwards with an eventual trip to a hospital emergency room. Talk about dedication to the team!
Shore AC also had an M60+ "B" team in this dogfight. Septuagenarian Peter Auteri spearheaded the charge, leading our superheroes in a marvelous time of 1:50:18, the best by far in his 70-74 age group. Next in for the "B" team was Rob Neugass. His yeoman-like 1:55:11 showed that Rob's persistent training efforts are paying off. Wrapping up "B" team scoring was a pitiful shell of Scott Linnell. Hobbled by foot pain from having tied shoes too tightly, Scott felt compelled to stop running at Mile 11. He power walked the remaining 2 miles, managing to keep his time under 2 hours in 1:59:07. Happily, the "B" team collected 8 points for the club with its third place.
Shore AC deployed a decent crew of X-Men for its 50+ team. With Salamone blazing the course, Tim McQueen recaptured his old form in Salamone's wake with a scorching 1:32:42 as second team scorer. After Gensib checked in as third scorer, Nolan McCarty bored a path through the heavy air to reach home in a highly respectable 1:38:35. Pino brought team scoring to a close. Our boys placed second, well ahead of Clifton but well behind the speedy gang from Freedom-Garmin.
Competition grew even more intense in the 40+ team category. Here, we had enough firepower to step onto the podium in third place. Newcomer Chris Moye staked our 40+ team to a fine start with his rocket-hot 1:29:04. After McQueen crossed the finish line in 1:32:42, Mike Raples kept the SAC M40+ machine whirring with a well-timed 1:36:36. McCarty and Auteri polished off the team scoring while Neugass served up a solid backstop.
The Shore AC men's open team had an opportunity for victory. John Larkin gave the team an outstanding boost with his magnificent 1:20:34 finish. With Moye and Raples adding excellent times as second and third scorers, Henry Flores kept the team in a great position by completing the grueling race in 1:42:57. It all came down to the 65-year-old team captain, Scott Linnell. If he could pull out a 1:42:30, victory would be ours. Alas, Linnell tied his shoes too tightly and had to walk the last 2 miles.
