Shore AC Hurdles Another Grand Prix Challenge: Steeplechase 10K
As we plow through the thick of the autumn competition calendar, the USATF-NJ team championship races are coming fast and furiously. Last weekend was the grand-daddy spectacle: the By Hook or By Crook 12K USATF-NJ all-category and USATF Masters National Team Championships. This weekend? It was the Steeplechase Cancer Center Benefit 10K USATF-NJ Team Championship race for masters men and women.
Apparently, many athletes had no desire to pound out a 10K today after having struggled through a grueling 12K last Sunday, for turnout today's 10K was exceptionally light. Shore AC mirrored that pattern, as SAC harriers mostly skipped the Steeplechase race. We did, however, scrape together just enough runners to enter teams in most of the age groups. But was it enough for Shore AC to hurdle this next "obstacle" in the 2022 USAFT-NJ Paul Miller Auto Group Club/Team Grand Prix?
You betcha! The Shore AC ladies cleared the hurdle with ease, making a clean sweep of the masters team competition! Meanwhile, the Shore AC gentlemen topped the 70+ and 60+ divisions while notching second place among 50+ teams.
Let's leap right into the details of the Shore AC women's triumphs today! High up in the 60+ category, tension gripped the spectators. Could the ladies in white stave off a fierce challenge from the purple-clad Clifton women for first place? Lead acrobat Nora Cary twirled a masterful 45:03 to buoy the SAC squad. Nora age graded a jaw-dropping 92.46%. That would have easily carried the day in any New Jersey were it not for the presence of a certain 50+ teammate that will be identified in the next paragraph. Next to somersault her way to glory for Shore AC was Susan Stirrat, as she sailed across the undulating hills of Hillsborough in 53:29. Fellow 65+ senior Kathy Packowski nailed victory for Shore AC when she landed a 1:04:12. Our 60+ team clipped Clifton by just 36 second. Well done, ladies!
As for our Shore AC 50+ crew, they enjoyed a much deeper cushion of 15 minutes over their second-place foe. Staking the team to a sizeable lead was our high-flying ace Suzanne La Burt with a jet-propelled 40:24. Suzanne's mind-bending time garnered her a sensational age grading of 92.75%, besting teammate Nora's amazing 92.48%. The 59-year=-old La Burt also finished second among all women. With Nora as second runner for our 50+ team, Shore AC was off to a great start. Team scoring came to a glorious conclusion when Laura Donnelly touched down in 52:33. Providing fail-safe insurance for the team were Stirrat, Packowski and Leslie Nowicki, whose superb 54:53 was her third-best lifetime 10K. Congratulations to Leslie and the team!
This brings us to our supersonic Shore AC women's 40+ team. Still glowing from victory in the USATF Masters National 12K the prior weekend, these ladies scorched the skies at Steeplechase. Leading the fleet of thunderbirds was Karen dos Santos. Her scalding 38:33 led all women. After La Burt screamed across the finish, Kim Anicito winged her way to a magnificent 46:40 to secure the team's triumph. Donnelly and Nowicki were there providing backup in case an of the top guns jammed. So it was that our 40+ team completed the sweep by Shore AC of all contested age categories among women's teams. Brava, ladies!
Now, how about the Shore AC gentlemen? We were fortunate to have the only men's 70+ team in the race today. Famous author Marc Bloom spearheaded our septuagenarian trio with a splendid 52:27. Fans had hardly ceased clapping when Przemek Nowicki motored through the finish chute in 53:28. Speaking of teamwork, Przemek and Susan Stirrat ran side-by-side in the latter portion of the race as they gave each other encouragement. It paid off for both! Premier race walker Eliot Collins then celebrated his new age group with a brisk 1:26:29 to polish of team scoring. Being the only 70+ team in the race, naturally our Shore AC elders took first place!
By contrast, our age 60+ men had to earn their victory against competition. Earn it they did! Jamie Button showed the field how it's done, as he fashioned a fabulous 44:40 to lead all 60+ men. Seconds later, Reno Stirrat hustled through the arched balloon with an outstanding 44:51. Mere heartbeats later, Gene Gugliotta closed the barn door with his excellent 45:06 to seal the win with 24 minutes to spare. Scott Linnell offered paltry insurance with his hobbling 47:21, a casualty of a recalcitrant calf muscle.
Note that the afore-mentioned members of our 70+ team also ran as a 60+ B team. They finished fourth. By doing so, they collected 5 valuable points for the club. Well done, fellas!
Given the roaring success of our men's 60+ team, you must be wondering how the Shore AC men's 50+ team fared. Their race was a nail-biter! Realizing we had no chance of beating Freedom-Garmin's 50+ dream team, we focused on snaring second place. Terry Lusardi guided our efforts with his magnificent team-leading 41:58. Button, Stiirrat, Gugliotta and Linnell all piled onto the wagon to complete team scoring. They brought just enough speed for second place, eclipsing third-place Clifton by 40 seconds.
Hooray for all of the Shore AC athletes who appeared in the Steeplechase races today!
