Shore AC Headlines Red Bank Classic 5K
A "classic" is something we come to appreciate over time. Judging by how well Shore Athletic Club ran at the Red Bank Classic 5K, we might be appreciating this race for years to come.
Maybe our ladies took inspiration from Paul McCartney, a classic in his own right. He had celebrated his 80th birthday earlier in the week with a grand performance at Met Life Stadium. Well, our masters-age women were rocking and rolling, too! Eager to score big in this USATF New Jersey Association Team Championship event, they riffed virtuoso races. So, sit back and enjoy this paean to a spectacular group of ladies!
Shore AC women's 40+ teams
Having a large turnout of Shore AC ladies, we were able to enter three 40+ teams. And we're not talking just quantity but also quality: they went 1-2-5 within a field of 10 teams! Headlining the 40+ A team was Kiera Russo, who flew over the challenging course to finish with a superb time of 19:34. 59-year-old sensation Suzanne La Burt rocketed home next with a riveting 20:06, winning the age grading competition in the process with a red-hot 90.8%. High-speed cruiser Lauren Jackson closed out team scoring shortly thereafter with a splendid 20:28 clocking. The insurance runner for this squad of top guns, Ali Marzulla, zoomed across the finish line in 21:00. Ali beat all but two other runners from all other masters teams.
Shore AC's hit parade continued with its 40+ B team. Laura DeLea (#KFG) made 55+ ladies everywhere proud with her masterful 21:32 race. In the blink of an eye, Alysia Puma stormed in, flaunting half-century pride with an outstanding 21:37. SAC partisans could hardly catch their breath before Karyn Baig cued the band with a terrific 21:46. Backup teammates Kim Anicito (23:24) and Kerry Monahan Gaughan (24:03) guaranteed a second-place finish for this merry band of harriers with their strong performances.
We're not done -- far from it!!! Get a load of our 40+ C team. Long-time Shore AC member Erin Blum ran her first race for the club in several years, opening up with a solid 23:32. 59-year-old Leslie Nowicki continued her successful season with a very respectable 27:00, Tower Hill and all! Right by Leslie's side was Kathy Koske, who marked her return to racing after 2+ years away with a 27:00 stake in the ground. The reward for this team's excellent efforts was fifth place out of ten 40+ teams. Well done, ladies!
Shore AC women's 50+ teams
With Garden State absent from this race, Shore AC's 50+ women's A team had no competition at Red Bank. The quartet of La Burt, Marzulla, DeLea and Puma outdistanced second-place Fleet Feet/Essex by nearly 10 minutes. The interesting question became, how well could our 50+ B team fare? With Monahan Gaughan leading the way in 24:03, Susan Stirrat ran a gutsy 26:14 to help the team, earning first place in the 65-69 age group in the process. Nowicki's 27:00 completed the team's scoring. It placed fifth, less than 30 seconds behind fourth-place Clifton. Running well in team insurance roles were Sue Patla (27:09) in her first Shore AC stint since 2020, and Kathy Packowski (33:23). Hooray to both teams!!!

The situation with our women's 60+ team at the Red Bank Classic 5K was quite a different story from our 40+ and 50+ teams. Three of our best runners -- Cary, Rothman and Hart -- could not attend. Such times present opportunities to demonstrate a club's depth. Our participating 60+ ladies -- Stirrat, Patla and Packowski -- rose to the challenge! They earned a podium spot, placing third within a field of six teams. Kudos, gals!
