Red Hot Shore AC Ladies Spice Up the Little Silver 5K
Men know: the age of a lady must be expressed with tact. That is especially true as age increases.
Which brings us to the 2022 Little Silver 5K race. The event served as a USATF New Jersey state-level Women's Open team championship race. When runners hear the word "open", they generally picture youthful harriers in their twenties and thirties. And indeed, on cue, Garden State Track Club brought a bevy of top-notch U40 gals, enough to fill out three outstanding teams. Alas, the Shore Athletic Club could muster only two U40 lasses, as injuries and pregnancies have sidelined a host of its starlets. How could Shore AC field a competitive team?
SAC masters ladies to the rescue, that's how! They may be old -- er, *cough*, seasoned -- but they can sure run! So fast, in fact, that we can call their seasoning "red hot"! But were these red hot chili peppers fast enough to stay with the thoroughbred GSTC fillies in yellow and black? Take a grandstand seat, place your bets and read how the race unfolded!
Our two young speedsters gave our Shore AC squad a magnificent start. Supercharged Kerry Dyke roared around the square course in a blistering 18:01 gun time (17:58 chip time) to place second among all women. (Sharp-eyed spectators noted that her feet remained inside her shoes in this race. :-)) Falcon-fast Amanda Eller winged her was to a whooshing 18:29 (18:26 chip) as the team's second scorer. What a great start for Shore AC!
But what remained for Shore AC to fill in their third through fifth scoring positions were five ladies well over age 55. What chance did we stand? Well, dear reader, those five ain't no old nags! Neigh -- er, nay -- they know how to bring the heat and storm towards the finish line! Highly decorated 59-year-old racer Suzanne La Burt led the charge as she pounded out a simply amazing 19:36 (19:33 chip). Super steed Laura DeLea, age 57, suppressed more than her share of aches and pains to squeeze out an incredible 21:00 (20:57 chip). The grande dame of New Jersey long-distance running, 67-year-old Nora Cary, wrapped up team scoring in a beautiful bow with her phenomenal 21:49 (21:47 chip). Cheering partisans then witnessed Susan Stirrat (26:32) and Kathy Packowski (31:23), ages 67 and 66, respectively, contribute all-important insurance to the team's cause.
Was it enough to hang with the GSTC racehorses? OK, certainly not with their A team, but the Shore AC crew didn't lag far behind the GSTC B team. We were only 30 seconds apart in terms of team averages: 19:17 versus 19:47. Compare that to our average ages of 36 versus 53 and one can conclude that the gals in white performed admirably well. And, hey, they beat the GSTC C team! Brava to our ladies, young and -- ahem, seasoned!
