Shore AC Pops a Frothy Finish in Fast Lager Run 5K
In what may be a sign of increasing road race competition in New Jersey, this year's edition of the Lager Run 5K overflowed with speedy runners. Consider the number of guys who completed the course in under 16 minutes. Last year, there were 10; this year, there were 19. How about the headcount under 17 minutes? Last year, it was 27; this year, a whopping 41! Could Shore AC vie with the big dogs despite missing some key speedsters?
You bet! Our Shore AC men's open A team rose to the challenge like a stout ale. Human rocket Elliot Gindi gave the team a flying start with his phenomenal 15:01. Newcomer Bobby Tuzzio distinguished himself with a blazing 16:00. Welcome, Bobby! Billy Washer piled on with a roaring 16:57, followed closely by Mark Minervini in 17:19 and John Larkin in 17:24 to put the finishing touches on an outstanding team performance. Backup runner Antonio Meza Soriano with his solid 18:42 ensured high team placement should any of the top 5 have faltered. Secondary backup Scott Linnell looked for a stein to hide under after he recorded a sour and flat 21:31, but thankfully it didn't prevent the team from taking fourth place within a highly competitive field. Mega-kudos, brothers!
Shore AC had two other "hoppy" teams in the heady, 25-team field. Our B team featured a collection of young and old masters. Joe Maranzani kicked off the B team's game with a scintillating 17:30 gem. Chris Moye stoked the flames inside fans' hearts with his ripping 18:59. Middle-aged Tim McQueen notched the middle scoring position when he zoomed around the track in 20:26. Graybeards Henry Mercer (20:51) and Harry Pino (22:09) closed out team scoring nicely. Sixth man Jamie Button tucked in behind Harry in 22:13 to deliver outstanding insurance. This jolly crew grabbed 13th place and a fistful of Fitzgerald's Lager to cap off a great night.
Now, guess who had the best "C" team among all of the competing clubs (well, except for Garden State)? Naturally, it was Shore AC! Thin man Gene Gugliotta popped the lid on team scoring with a fantastic 21:02 barn-burner. Our next scorer was another senior citizen, namely Hal Leddy, He proved that being age 67 doesn't spell the end of running, as he spun a superb 21:20. Third scorer Peter Auteri knows something about elderly athletics. He won his 70-74 age group handily with a magnificent 22:24. Fresh off the long-term injured reserve list, recent retiree Rob Neugass showed off the fruits of added training miles with an impressive time of 22:45. Team scoring was appropriately concluded by elder statesman Przemek Nowicki when he skillfully transported his 77-year-old frame across the finish line in 24:59. Wizened rookie Bill Bosmann celebrated running for his new club with a strong 25:35 to ensure good team placement in case one of the first five dropped out of the race. Hooray, everyone!
