Graybeards Power Shore AC to Podium Placements
We may be old, but we are BOLD! Faced with having zero 40s or 50s guys to populate our Shore AC men's 40+ and 50+ teams, our elders rose to the occasion. Our entire quintet of age 60-69 silverbacks stepped up the compete as the Shore AC 50+ and 40+ teams. Meanwhile, our trio of septuagenarians did double duty, serving not only as the 70+ team but our 60+ team, too.
And how, you ask, did this gaggle of geriatrics perform? You might say, after reading our story, that we exceeded expectations! Grab a comfortable seat, read on, then see if you agree. :-)
Let's begin with our most senior citizens: that long-toothed threesome. Back in action after several months on the sidelines, Pete Auteri continued his recovery with a splendid 23:27 to lead the 70+ gang. Bill Bosmann channeled sweet memories of blazing younger days to churn out a respectable 24:07. Rookie Carl Richko completed team scoring with a solid 28:11. The combined strength of these times yielded victory in the -- well, ok, uncontested -- 70+ team category, but also an admirable second place in the hotly contested 60+ team division. Well, done, gents!
And what of that five-some who act like they're young but conceal their birth dates? Encouraged from the adoring crowd by medically redshirted Reno Stirrat, these handsome has-beens recaptured a bit of their glory days. They actually won the 50+ team competition. They also podiumed in the 40+ team category, placing third among five teams. Mighty Mike Salamone led the charge, scorching the course with a superb 19:11. In the process, Mike nailed second place in age grading among men. Gene Gugilotta then sailed smoothly across the finish line with an impressive time of 20:52. Seconds behind Gene came decorated high school coach and Monmouth University Trustee Henry Mercer, clocking a magnificent 20:59 to place first in the 65-69 age group. Gutsy Harry Pino pounded out a terrific 21:51 performance as fourth man. Gasping to stay with swift Harry came a lumbering Scott Linnell, running every bit like his 66 years as he tripped the timer in 21:53. Hats off to the team!
