April Showers, Running Powers Come Shore AC 's Way at 10K
The hashtag #KFG accurately describes Shore AC's drive to win today. But, since this is a family-friendly site, we'll use polite language. A century ago, the Broadway show Bombo popularized these lyrics:
Though April showers may come your way,
They bring the flowers that bloom in May.
So if it's raining have no regrets
Because it isn't raining rain you know, it's raining violets.
Shore AC harriers must have been humming Al Jolson's lively lilt today at the 2022 Cherry Blossom 10K Race in Newark's Branch Brook Park. Though rain overspread the venue, it did not deter these intrepid athletes from their goal. Our women whirled through the course like Ginger Rogers, taking both first and second place in the team competition. Taking their cue from the ladies, our men jigged like Fred Astaire and went 1-4-9. What's more, in the individual competition, our young bucks took 1-2-3!
Let's begin this race report with the Shore AC ladies. The sight of cherry trees galore in early bloom must have energized these gals. Dynamo Kerry Dyke led the way, powering the Shore AC women's "A" team with a magnificent 38:29 performance that placed her third overall among women in the race. Fellow phenom Amanda Eller added a superlative 39:01 as second team finisher. Then, exactly one minute later came the eye-popping sight of 58-year-old Suzanne La Burt rocketing across the finish line in an astounding 40:01 to notch third place on the Shore AC Open "A" team. Needless to say, Suzanne's 92.48% age grading topped all other runners in the race. Fans could barely catch their breath before Kellee McEwen flew through the chute in 40:18 to fill the fourth scoring spot on the team. Several minutes later, victory was secured when young masters harrier Karyn Baig raced to the finish line in 44:08 in an even, head-to-head battle with team captain Scott Linnell. Veteran club member Leslie Nowicki provided all -important insurance with a solid 57:36. Kudos. ladies!
Meanwhile, the Shora AC ladies' "B" team made their own happy music. Rookie sensation Ali Marzulla sang the opening stanzas, accelerating up the gradual 3-mile incline to finish with an outstanding time of 43:26. Sophomore star Nora Cary brought the house down with a dazzling 45:08. Given Nora's 67 years of age, her timed equated to an amazing, world-class 92.29% age grading. .Next in for the "B" team came busy USATF-NJ LDR Masters Chair Laura DeLea. Wary of aggravating persistent sources of pain, Laura approached this event as a training run. Wouldn't we all like to run a 45:14 as a 10K training run! Second-year speedster Kim Anicito secured the team's fourth scoring position with her impressive 47:02. Then, when 66-year-old Susan Stirrat broke the timing plane with her remarkable 52:54, the team locked up second place with a 7-minute cushion over the other 13 teams in the competition. Frequent racer Luz Ravines provided the team with an excellent backstop in 56:42 to guarantee their silver medals. Congratulations, ladies!

April 3, 2022, Newark, NJ: Another view of the rollicking crew. Left to right: Chris Rinaldi, Kerry Dyke, Ali Marzulla, Suzanne La Burt, Karyn Baig, Mike Salamone, Nora Cary, Mark Minervini and Scott Linnell.
Though no severe weather was predicted for race day, a tornado of sorts swirled along the course. It was the Shore AC men's open "A" team, spinning heads as they roared by. The advance downdraft was second-year sensation Elliot Gindi. He won the race overall in a stunning time of 31:56. Close behind Gindi came the howling gales of Justin Scheid (32:16) and Brian Hill (32:26), who stormed their way to second place and third place overall, respectively. Thunder and lightning struck when JP Montgomery (33:08) and BIlly Washer (34:45) hammered home to snare seventh and ninth places, respectively. Mark Minervini guaranteed the team victory with his scintillating 35:49 as sixth team man. The Shore AC men's open A team outdistanced their closest competition by a solid 11 minutes. Well done, boys!
Even after the "A" team had roared by, it was no time to relax. After all, the Shore AC men's open "B" team loomed -- and they were roiling the atmosphere, too! Sophomore star Mike Salamone spearheaded this derecho with a hurricane-force 40:13. (That is FAST for a 62-year-old!) Fifties captain Chris Rinaldi blew through close behind with a head-spinning 40:45. Riding the crest of the storm came former National Masters Runner of the Year Reno Stirrat, working his way back to top-notch age grading with a superb 83.99% (second among men) for his outstanding time of 41:17. We then welcomed back Princeton University professor Nolan McCarty to team championship racing after a 2-year hiatus. Nolan crossed in a solid 43:06 as fourth scorer for the "B" team. Shore-area coach and patron Henry Mercer cemented the team's excellent fourth-place finish with his ripping 43:24. Proud dad Brian Hill provided the team with firm insurance in 43:50, demonstrating that his recovery from plantar fasciitis is going well.
Shore AC even mustered a men's open "C" team. Unlike the "A" and "B" teams, this squad wasn't a ferocious typhoon. But, we had more effect than butterfly wings. Graying goose Scott Linnell rode the breeze home in 44:08 to get the ball rolling. Gentleman Jamie Button tracked close behind in 44:28, continuing a exciting acceleration in his race speed. Ultramarathoner Gene Gugliotta completed the circuit seconds later in 44:32. Sports medicine specialist Harry Pino notched another milestone in his recovery from a muscle pull by crossing in a terrific 45:26. Newbie Peter Auteri wrapped up "C" team scoring with a 50:57, locking down ninth place within a field of 15 teams and beating the "B" teams of all other clubs. Przemek Nowicki provided a first round of insurance in 54:31, while race walker Eliot Collins contributed secondary insurance with his 1:25:53. Congratulations, "C" team members!
