July 16, 2022, Holmdel, NJ. A bevy of top-notch elder statesmen in the New Jersey running community fraternize before the start of the Men's 60+ heat in the Big Bang Mile. A plethora of Shore AC singlets decorate the gathering, portending the Massive SAC Attack to come. Photograph by Rick Lee.
A Festival of Science and Running at the Big Bang Mile
Although the crowds for the Big Bang Mile and Science Festival were smaller than we hoped, the buzz that permeated our events made the crowds feel much larger. A major culprit was a torrential thunderstorm that brought the Science Festival to a premature close and nearly forced cancellation of the Big Bang Mile. But all that rain couldn't dampen our spirits. Once the mile heats began after a 30-minute delay, enthusiasm ran rampart!
Thankfully for Shore Athletic Club, its turnout constituted a crowd all its own. It was a fast crowd as well. Not only did Shore AC have the numbers to enter teams in every contested age group, but Shore AC managed a clean sweep in the men's team competitions and a near-sweep among women's teams. Thanks to its dominating performance, Shore AC surged ahead in the standings of the 2022 USATF-NJ Paul Miller Auto Group Club and Team Grand Prix.
Let's recount our massive success by starting with our elder gentlemen: the Shore AC men's 70+ team. After not having enough healthy septuagenarians to enter teams in any spring season race, we finally had sufficient numbers for the Big Bang Mile. And our greybeards rocked! John Kilduff stopped by on his drive from Maryland to New York to contribute a ferocious 6:21 to lead the gang. With Bobby O'Rouke chipping in a snappy 7:44 and Harry Nolan nailing down a solid 7:51, the team achieved an impressive average of 7:19 to outdistance second-place Clifton by a comfortable margin. John Kuhi took time out from digital clock duties to provide backup with an 11:05.
Shore AC prowess shone in the men's 60+ competition, where we took first, second and fifth places. The pace for our "A" team was set emphatically by Henry Notaro. Rocketing out from the start with the national 60-64 age group record of 5:00 in his sights, Henry scorched the course but just missed the record with his 5:04. Hal Leddy put it all together with an outstanding 6:00 flat as second team scorer. Don Schwartz scampered across the finish line moments later in 6:05 to secure a superb team average of 5:43. Henry Mercer added speedy insurance to the team with his magnificent 6:09.
Shore AC's men's 60+ "B" team showcased our club's tremendous depth in this age group as it hammered out a howling 6:04 team average. Leading the way was usual "A" team harrier Mike Salamone in 5:56. Mike had been rostered on the "B" team because he was unsure whether he would race -- but, like most of us passionate runners, he just couldn't resist jumping into the fray! Kevin McCormack demonstrated that he has finally overcome his injuries with a scintillating 6:06. Scott Linnell, like Mike Salamone, was counseled by his physical therapist not to race but couldn't resist the siren call of compete. A month plus of no speed work showed in his plodding 6:10, but Scott was delighted that his calf muscle cooperated. With Kilduff contributing one leg of backup support, the other leg was provided by our North Star Reno Stirrat. Beset by a nagging hamstring problem, Reno persevered for the team to cross in 6:31.
The impressive depth extended to our men's 60+ "C" team. There, O'Rourke, Nolan and Kuhi were joined by jolly giant Frank Kus. Running his first USATF-NJ team championship race as a 60-year-old, Frank powered through the course in 10:40 to help his team nab fifth place. Well done, gents!

The Shore AC men's 50+ teams caught a break at the Big Bang Mile as Freedom-Garmin -- usually the 50+ winners -- failed to bring the minimum of 5 guys for a 50+ team. In addition, Garden State Track Club and their potent M50+ squad abstained from this event. In their absences, Shore AC made hay. Our two 50+ teams went 1-2. Our 50+ captain, Chris Rinaldi, helped set the pace for the "A" team with his rabbit-fast 5:39. That ace time, coupled with Notaro's blazing 5:04 and galloping efforts by Salamone, Leddy and Schwartz plus backup from Mercer cooked up a winning 5:45 team average. Meanwhile, Mike DiLeva contributed a solid 6:17 while John Delaney recorded 6:33 in his first race since college days to assist the "B" team in its second-place finish. Sixties harriers McCormack, Linnell, Stirrat and Kus joined in the B-team fun.
The biggest surprise of the day for Shore AC was its victory in the men's 40+ category. Our boys fended off vigorous challenges from Freedom-Garmin and Clifton among others. Leading the charge were Chris Whitehead and Joe Maranzani, both of whom broke the scoring plane with a scorching 5:09. Hot on their heels was Matt Coleman, who blasted through the balloon arch in 5:10. Chris Moye came barreling through in 5:31 as the team's fourth scorer, while Rinaldi polished off team scoring with his 5:39. As if that wasn't enough, the team featured superb backup as Pete Chechel (5:45), Trevor Bryan (5:48) and Tim Horn (5:55) all easily beat the 6-minute bogey. DiLeva joined them in providing insurance. Hats off to Chechl, Bryan and Horn for their first races as official members of Shore AC in a USATF-sanctioned race!
The good times for Shore AC kept rolling right into the Men's Open division. Our team teams placed first and third within a field of five squads. Elliot Gindi spearheaded our "A" team with a crowd-rousing 4:17. Indeed, spectators went wild as Gindi chased overall winner John Walker (4:13) in a thrilling display of guts. Michael Drews made his Shore AC debut a memorable one with his cheetah-like 4:43. Whitehead and Maranzani notched the team's third and fourth scoring positions. They were followed by yet another newcomer, namely Gerard Rokosz, who delivered a searing 5:12. Rookie Kevin O'Dowd celebrated his Shore AC debut with a dashing 5:16 to provide his team with all-important backup. The "A" team's average of 4:54 per runner bested second-place Freedom-Garmin's by 30 seconds. Way to go, lads!
As for the Shore AC men's Open B team, their 5:29 average per runner came within 5 seconds of second place! Coleman led the way. He was followed by yet another fresh face in the SAC picture, namely Kie Antone, with his excellent 5:24. After Moye checked in as third team finisher, rookie Greg Leddy strode through the arch in 5:33. Chechel, Bryan and Horn rounded out this swashbuckling crew.
All in all, the Shore AC men's teams amassed a whopping 82 Club Grand Prix points. This was more than all other clubs combined. Now, that's a Massive SAC Attack!

July 16, 2022, Holmdel, NJ: Women ages 50, muscles tensed, await the starting gun. Shore AC's Kathy Packowski (sunglasses), Ali Marzulla (#317), Nora Cary (#304), Panse Geer (white visor), Laura DeLea, Susan Stirrat, Kerry Monahan Gaughan (#319), Diane Rothman (green singlet) and Suzanne La Burt (#315) brace for glory. Unlike with our men's teams, there was angst about how well the Shore AC women's teams might fare. After all, we had no "U40" ladies. Plus, we faced juggernaught club Bella N Motion, led by former Shore AC superstar Dianne DeOliveira. They are tremendously strong in the 50+ and 40+ categories. How would we compare?
Let's begin our accounting of the Shore AC women's teams with our dedicated 60+ set. Blazing the path as she so often does was Nora Cary. Though her forte is the long distances, Nora managed a higher gear for the single mile and tripped the timer in 6:38. This equated to a stupendous 87% age grading for the 67-year-old, placing her second overall among women. A hard-charging Diane Rothman galloped through the festive archway in 6:46 for a superb 1-2 punch. When Susan Stirrat zipped across the finish line with her terrific 7:40, that sealed the victory for the team in white jerseys. Their average time of 7:01 bested the rest of the field by more than 2 minutes. To give the team that all-important insurance, Kathy Packowski notched a speedy 9:12 while Panse Geer race walked the lovely course in a brisk 12:31. Dyn-o-mite, ladies!
That brings us to the women's 50+ team competition. We knew it would be tough to tackle Bella. Experience teaches us, though, that anything can happen in a race; you just need to give it your best and see how everything else shakes out. As expected, Bella's Totaro and DeOliveira scorched the field with outstanding times of 5:45 and 5:50, respectively, to stake Bella to a formidable lead. It would take heroic efforts by the Shore AC "A" team, coupled with a slow third runner for Bella, to give us any hope. Running demon Suzanne La Burt poured heart and soul into her race, squeezing out a fantastic 5:54 for top age grading among women with 88%. Dedicated teammate Laura DeLea found the fortitude to will her aching body through another race and pounded out an amazing 6:13. Then, 2021 Rookie of the Year Ali Marzulla motored home with a rapid 67:21 to complete a solid team performance -- backed up by Cary. But would their 6:09 team average be fast enough to beat Bella? Bella's third lady would need to run better than 6:52 for Bella to win. Bella's Carlton did that with ease, shocking the crowd with an astounding 6:04. Well done, Bella! Well done, Shore AC! We LOVE the competition!!!
But wait, fans! Shore AC had a women's 50+ "B" in this race. Could they take third place? Kerry Monahan Gaughan did her part, staking the "B" squad to a great start with her 6:42. With Rothman, Stirrat and Geer packing in behind her, the team posted a dazzling 7:03 team average. That was indeed fast enough to vanquish the other four teams in the field and mount the podium. Brava, ladies!
We come now, dear reader, to the women's 40+ team dogfight. Shore AC fought bravely. Young masters speedster Karen dos Santos spun a wicked 5:37 to spearhead the SAC attack. Gifted harrier Kiera Russo injected a fiery 5:45. When DeLea crossed in 6:13, the seaside ladies cemented a 5:52 team average that would beat the 5:53 average of Bella's 50+ team. Lucky for Bella -- and unlucky for Shore AC -- Courtney Decker recently turned 40 years of age. Decker's utterly smoking 5:10 put Bella on top. It should be noted that Kim Anicito ran an excellent 6:29, joining Monahan Gaughan in providing rock-sold insurance to the Shore AC team. You guys rock!
Although Bella possesses outstanding talent, their club is small. Consequently, they lacked headcount for a women's open team. Thus, Shore AC waltzed their way to victory in the women's open team competition. Our scorers included dos Santos, Russo, La Burt, Marzulla and Anicito with Packowski as sixth runner. Congratulations, ladies!
