October 3, 2021, Little Silver, NJ: The outstanding Shore AC runners share their feelings of accomplishment. Left to right: Kerry Dyke, Suzanne La Burt and Mike Salamone.
Lean Shore AC Ladies Crew Sails Mystery Ship in LS5K
The elder runners among us may recall a popular song from the 1970s called "Ride, Captain, Ride". In it, a captain invites people to join his small but merry crew. (Well, 73 men ain't exactly "small" for a running team, but stay with the analogy here.) However, in the song, "Nobody heard them calling. No one came at all." After the roaring success for Shore AC in the preceding By Hook or By Crook 12K extravaganza, that's how it felt trying to raise more than one team for the Little Silver 5K race.
Meanwhile, opposing clubs Garden State Track Club and Raritan Valley Road Runners brought armadas of harriers. Indeed, the first few rows on the starting line resembled an absolute swarm of GSTC yellowjacket singlets.
Despite its disadvantage in numbers, dear reader, our small but courageous Shore AC contingent put up a mighty battle. Now, you might say that fifth place isn't much to crow about even within a field of twelve teams. Consider, though, that we placed first among non-GSTC teams. Plus, we might have scored third place had one of our crew not scratched on the morning of the race due to injury.
Who were our few but proud voyagers in this race? The pilot of our lead speedboat was Kerry Dyke. Pounding the waves with unparalleled ferocity, she floored her engines in the third mile to pass several foes and notch third place among women with a hurricane-fast 17:32 (gun time). Skimming the seas not far behind came Amanda Eller, who flew across the finish line in a phenomenal 18:14. Eager to prove that age poses no hindrance to speed, 58-year-old Suzanne La Burt gunned her jet ski through the fast rectangular course in an amazing 19:24. She led all runners in this race with a jaw-dropping age grading of 93.2%. The next nimble watercraft in our small fleet carried Kiera Russo and her trigger-happy hamstring to a carefully controlled but still speedy 20:02 clocking. To round out our scoring, we welcomed back Inez Montalvo to the racing scene after a nearly two-year absence. More accustomed to sprints on the track than extended runs on pavement, Inez made the best of her fish-out-of-water circumstances to complete this road race in 24:32. Three able-bodies seafarers constituted our all-important backup flotilla. Laura Donnelly celebrated her first team race of 2021 with a solid 25:35 performance. Luz Ravines recorded another milestone in her years-long recovery from a severe leg injury by shaving 2 minutes off of her previous 5K time by notching 28:21. Then, Karen Gregory, our eldest runner, chopped nearly 3 minutes off of her previous 5K time in registering 31:50. Well done, ladies! Thanks to our fifth-place finish in this team race, we maintained the lead among Open Women in the 2021 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix.
