Shore AC Microbrews a Stout Draught at Lager 5K
With visions of frothy pints dancing in their heads, Shore AC athletes dashed through the leafy streets of Glen Ridge like Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. In this case, though, no one was asleep. Rather, the merry residents gathered aside streets to cheer on us bounding contestants and bask in the evening glow of a steamy late August day. Roughly one thousand runners pranced like reindeer along the 3.1-mile course, knowing that the famous Fitzgerald’s Lager beer awaited them at the finish line.
Shore Athletic Club’s harriers must have been good boys and girls this year. They were gifted with exceedingly fast times. As a result, Shore AC's three men's open teams placed high in the standings. Shore AC's women also shone individually.
Our men's open "A" team unwrapped a splendid second-place finish. Ace harrier Justin Scheid led the pack. Spectators marveled at the back-and-forth battle up front between Justin and Elliot Gindi. When the two hit the track for the final 300 yards, Elliot surged ahead for the win in a blazingly fast 14:56, while Justin snared second in this highly competitive race with a searing 15:01. Justin's teammates roaring in shortly after. JP Montgomery stormed the finish line in 15:43, good for eighth place overall. Nick McFarland flashed his Monmouth Hawk speed while flying through the course in 16:21. Fourth scorer for the "A" team was Billy Washer, doing his part to pull Santa's sleigh with a terrific 17:12 clocking. John Larkin wrapped up team scoring with a scintillating breakthrough 17:20 performance. Providing all-important backup were Mark Minervini with a stellar 17:39 for his first race in a Shore AC singlet, Antonio Meza Soriano with a solid 19:24 and Zack Price, who debuted for Shore AC with a strong 19:34.
Holiday-like festivities erupted when it was announced that the Shore AC men's open "B" team placed among the top 10 teams. Composed entirely of masters-age runners in the 40s and 50s (plus 72-year-old legend Roger Price!), they nailed ninth place. Leading the team was the talented rookie Joe Maranzani, who celebrated his first race in a Shore AC singlet with an outstanding 18:32. Second-year veteran Chris Rinaldi continued his dramatic return to high-performance running by slamming down a superb 19:17. Luke Falk and Terry Lusardi crossed soon after to represent the El Norte crew with distinction in 20:03 and 20:07, respectively. Mike DiLeva wrapped a bow around the team's scoring when he zoomed through the CompuScore arch in 20:55. Tim McQueen swirled through in Mike's wake with a solid 21:05 as first insurer, while Brian Cunningham added insurance cushion with his 23:26. As for our man Roger Price, we were head-over-heels delighted that he was able to power-walk the course in 46:09. We wish this jolly good fellow many more years of racing fun!
A motley collection of old geezers aged 60 and over constituted Shore AC's men's open "C" team. They proved, however, that ancient men aren't necessarily decrepit. Nay, this cabal of curmudgeons cracked the top half of the standings, placing 12th among the 24 teams! Heading the geriatric charge was Hal Leddy, who blazed through the bucolic course in a sizzling 20:35. Next to clatter on the rooftop came a huffing and puffing Scott Linnell, who plunked a 21:12 down the chimney. Newbie Gene Gugliotta willed his way through the pain of plantar fasciitis to notch a remarkable 21:19. Jamie Button spiced up the party with a spirited 22:32, while Rob Neugass knocked out several years of rust by cranking out an impressive 23:09 to seal the scoring. The team benefitted from the backup services provided by SAC veteran Przemek Nowicki and his sure-footed 25:33.
A hearty "well done" goes out to all three Shore AC men's open teams!
