Shore AC's Trick-or-Treat Bags Overflow with Halloween Booty

Wow, what good fortune Shore Athletic Club had in selecting a neighborhood for trick-or-treat on Halloween Day!  We filled our bags to bursting, collecting huge team points across all age groups.  In fact, on the women's side, Shore AC swept the first place positions in all age groups from Open to 60+.  Absolutely spooky!

Draw near if you dare, dear reader, and hear the gory details that will have your flesh crawling with goose bumps.  Let's begin with the dynamite Shore AC women.  When casing a neighborhood for the best candy, a group always needs a speedy scout.  For our Open team, that was Christiana Rutkowski.  A highly accomplished short-distance runner, Christiana is starting to branch out to longer distances.  She led the way spectacularly in this challenging race, torching the half marathon in 1:26:29.  This stellar time earned Christiana third place overall among women.  As it turned out, Christiana was the only under-40 runner on the team.  Young masters harriers Lauren Jackson (1:29:50) and Karen dos Santos (1:31:08) added scorching times that, combined with Christiana's, effectively dusted the competition.  Rookie 50-year-old sensation Ali Marzulla piled on with an outstanding 1:36:12.  Our gutsy 55-year-old heroine Laura DeLea delivered the coup de grace, pounding out an impressive 1:42:09 to complete team scoring.  All-important insurance was provided by Kim Gittines (1:54:38) and Luz Ravines (2:25:48).  It should be noted that this was Kim's first team championship race in over 2 years, and that Luz persevered through 13.1 grueling miles on an ankle that a year ago was broken in multiple locations.  Fabulously done, ladies!

The 40+ women's team for Shore AC pulled off a truly terrifying performance.  Led by the incomparable 58-year-old Suzanne La Burt, they skewered the competition with an mind-warping 1:30:06 average for their top three scorers.  La Burt's superlative 1:29:21 earned her a shocking 90.21% age grading, by far the best among the female finishers.  Jackson and dos Santos filled the second and third scoring spots while Gittines ensured victory with her solid backup accomplishment.

For whatever reason -- fright, flight or plight -- Shore AC women's 50+ and 60+ teams faced no competition whatsoever.  It would have taken a highly talented team to rival the Shore AC 50+ ladies.  Their per-runner average of 1:35:54 would have played well in a national competition.  La Burt, Marzulla and DeLea combined to produce that scary average, while 63-year-old Diane Rothman (1:51:16) and 66-year-old Susan Stirrat (2:17:42 gun time, about 10 minutes less chip time) contributed essential insurance.  Rothman, Stirrat and Ravines united their talents to claim first place among 60+ teams.  Creepy wonderful, ladies!

 As for the Shore AC men, they encountered more competition that the ladies, though again not nearly as much as in other USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix races.  Our Shore AC men's open team bowed to a stacked Garmin squad.  Leading the Shore AC charge as always was our Formula 1 Ferrari Justin Scheid.  He burned rubber across the difficult two-loop course to cross in an amazing 1:11:54 as third runner overall.  Surging speedster John Larkin stunned the spectators with his lightning-fast 1:22:02.  Rookie Mark Minervini kept the good time rolling with his scintillating 1:24:57.  Next to score for our rollicking crew was masters sensation Joe Maranzani, whose 1:26:45 wowed the crowd.  Fellow masters harrier Mike Raples closed out team scoring with his superb 1:34:22, while tall man Bob Skorupski defended the team's rear guard in 1:49:31.

The competition peaked in the men's 40+ age group.  Our Shore AC chaps put up a fair fight and earned a spot on the podium with their third-place finish.  With Maranzani spearheading their efforts, 50+ trooper Ken Ginsburg chopped mightily with his torrid 1:28:33.  After Raples checked in as third team scorer, Tim McQueen demonstrated major success in his recovery from a horrific accident by tripping the clock in a marvelous 1:38:22.  50-year-old Jeff Altman wrapped up team scoring with a credible 1:38:57, marking an excellent milestone in his own recovery from injury.  Fellow 50+ teammates Luke Falk (1:40:04) and Chris Rinaldi (1:40:57) derived good workouts from this race.  Skorupski and Mike McDonnell (2:30:38) then heaped even more insurance on the team.  Well done, gents!

Quite the surprise sprung forth when results for the 50+ men's team competition were announced.  Shore AC won!  Leading this unexpected turn of events was 60+ rookie phenomenon Mike Salamone, whose scintillating 1:27:43 earned him top honors in the 60-64 age group big a margin of more than 6 minutes.  After Ginsburg crossed as the team's second scorer, long-time national legend Reno Stirrat zoomed home in a jaw-dropping 1:31:55.  Not only did Reno win the 65-69 age group by nearly 12 minutes; he also achieved second-best age grading among masters men with a magnificent 83.04%.  McQueen and Altman closed out the scoring for this champion team, while Falk and Rinaldi assured the team had backup.  65-year-old Scott Linnell threw another insurance log on the fire when he puttered through on spent legs in 1:43:47, and McDonnell did the same.

With Salamone and Stirrat rocketing through the course, there was no question that Shore AC would nail down the 60+ team victory.  Even Linnell's woeful race didn't harm the team's fortunes.  Important point: Carl Gensib was also a member of this high-flying team and should have been recorded as third scorer in 1:37:45.  The club has requested that the results be corrected to include Gensib.  In any event, the Shore AC 60+ men continued their dominance of the USATF-NJ Grand Prix, having won every race this year.  Bravo, gentlemen!
