Shore AC Harvests Bushels of Success at Giralda Farms 10K
Farmers dream of perfect times when the agricultural stars align to yield produce that fills the storage bins to overflowing. And when such delightful times arrive, how do they celebrate? Vintners stomp grapes. Frontier folk host hoedowns. Children cavort in stuffed haylofts. And aliens join in the fun by creating crop circles.
So, when Shore AC compiled another stunning collection of points in a USATF New Jersey Club/Team Grand Prix race, how did they express their satisfaction? They posted so many congratulatory texts that social media nearly crashed! (Yes, OK, that's a bit of hyperbole.) The SAC ladies especially lit up the electronic platforms, and for good reason. For the second race in a row, their teams swept the age groups from Open to 60+. That's worth a massive chorus of on-line shouts!
Let's begin with les grandes dames: our lovely 60+ ladies. Longtime Shore AC star Diane Rothman marshalled this posse as she galloped like wildfire across the undulating course. Her scintillating time of 49:05 placed her securely in second place in her 60-64 age group. Furthermore, her 80.38% age grading ranked fourth among all female finishers. The next scorer for the team also had big accomplishments to tout. Susan Stirrat crossed in a superb 53:55 to earn first place in her 65-69 age group and ten in the women's age grading list at 76.19%. With the team lacking a backup runner, the onus fell on Luz Ravines to run a solid race on still-recovering ankles. Luz responded like a legend, laying down a magnificent 57:38 to wrap up team scoring and nail down first place for the team.
It was Shore AC's good fortune to have enough 50+ ladies at Giralda to enter two teams. Guess what? They finished 1-2! The incomparable Suzanne La Burt spearheaded the SAC W50+ A squad. She barnstormed the event with a superlative 40:47 clocking, notching second place *OVERALL* among women -- at age 58! -- and bested all runners, men and women, with her stunning 90.74% age grading. First-year phenom Ali Marzulla padded the "A" team's margin of victory by contributing a magnificent 44:49. Ali earned second place in her 50-54 age group. Indomitable cowgirl Laura DeLea lassoed the final scoring spot for the team, hog-tying a rapid 45:53 to secure second place in her 55-59 age group. Laura's excellent 78.71% age grading ranked her sixth among all women. 2021 addition Kerry Monahan Gaughan put the "A" team out of reach by contributing a marvelous 47:08 insurance run. Kerry placed third among 55-59 runners, completing a Shore AC sweep in that category, and ranked seventh among women in age grading with a spectacular 78.52%. Holy moly!
As for the Shore AC women's 50+ "B" group, it consisted mostly of the afore-mentioned 60+ starlets. Rothman led the way while Stirrat stole second. The third and final scorer for this second-place team was Leslie Nowicki. Her time of 55:51 equated to just under 9 minutes per mile -- quite the accomplishment for this steadily improving runner on a hilly 6.2-mile course. Steadily recovering Ravines provided all-important backup. Well done, gals!
Younger ages means faster legs. That was certainly true for the 40+ age group at Giralda, so Shore AC had to meet the challenge. Enter spirited steed Karen dos Santos! Her speedy 42:16, when combined with La Burt's insane 40:47 and DeLea's ripping 45:53, put our quadragenarian crew comfortably in front of a high-quality team from Garden State Track Club. Gaughan and Nowicki guarded the rear of this victorious quintet. Brava!
Marching towards the youngest end of the spectrum brings us to the Open category. Our Shore AC women's open team ruled the roost at Giralda. Paced by dos Santos, this mane-shaking herd featured the likes of hard-charging Erin O'Neill (43:37), Kari Hullen (44:57) and Alysia Puma (45:38) to accompany Mazulla among the 5 scoring team members. First-year filly Samantha Hoagland guaranteed the team's victory with her solid 47:03 as backup.

November 14, 2021, Madison, NJ: Members of the Shore AC men's battalion gather before the race to pump each other up. Front, left to right: Reno Stirrat, Harry Pino, Paul Deykerhoff, Przemek Nowicki, Chris Rinaldi and Bob Skorupski. Back row, left to right: Justin Scheid, Elliot Gindi, JP Montgomery, Ken Ginsburg, Tim Chelius, Scott Linnell and Joe Maranzani.
What about the Shore AC ranch dudes, you ask? Them brawny boys made some hay of their own! The most dramatic scene occurred up front. In a repeat of the Lager 5K race earlier this year, Elliot Gindi and Justin Scheid fought tooth and nail to the finish. As before, Elliot spotted Justin a lead with several hundred yards to go and then hammered his way to victory. Elliot's white-hot first-place time of 32:24, coupled with Justin's equally searing 32:27, formed a marvelous 1-2 punch to get the Shore AC men's open team started on their way to triumph. The hit parade continued when JP Montgomery flew across the timing mats in a scorching 33:48 as third team scorer. Rookie Nick McFarland pounded the drums with fury as he notched the fourth scoring position with a blazing 35:53. Fellow newbie Billy Washer sealed team scoring with an emphatic 36:12. Get this: Billy finished only 2 seconds behind the fastest guy from all other open teams. Needless to say, Shore AC won by a wide margin of more than 30 minutes. Backup runners are essential to any team, and we were fortunate to have John Larkin (36:24), Joe Maranzani (39:03) and Bob Skorupski (44:37) busting their guts in that vital role. Magnificent work, men!
Our more experienced Shore AC cowboys in the 40+ category routinely face overwhelming competition from two other clubs, namely Garmin and Garden State. This day was no different. Nevertheless, the roughriders in white singlets easily bested the other four teams in the rodeo. Joining Maranzani and Skorupski in the Shore AC 40+ team's third-place showing were a trio of half-century harriers, Leading this quinquagenarian threesome was accomplished triathlete Ken Ginsburg. Ken pedaled ferociously on foot through the looping course to register his impressive 39:11, good for third place in the 50-59 age group. A rejuvenated 58-year-old Terry Lusardi signaled his return to the upper echelons of masters roadsters, spinning a superb 41:59 to grab third place in the 55-59 category. 50+ team captain Chris Rinaldi chose a more prudent course, nursing a nagging pain while cruising to a respectable 43:36 conclusion. The boys in this gang were proud to have 77-year-old Przemek Nowicki providing that ever-essential backup in a fine 55:19. Well done, lads!
The 50+ team category revealed Shore AC's remarkable quantity of elder athletes. A bevy of 60+ runners permitted us to enter two 50+ teams. A robust dose of quality even vaulted our Shore AC men's 50+ "A" team close to front-runner Garmin. With Ginsburg spearheading the charge, 61-year-old sensation Mike Salamone crushed the course with a jaw-dropping 40:09. Mike topped decorated veteran Beau Atwater for first place in the 60-64 age group. After Lusardi checked in as third team scorer, our running inspiration, consultant and champion Reno Stirrat sailed in, breaking the plane in an amazing 43:03. How is 43:03 amazing for Reno, you ask? Well, Reno had been hospitalized for 3 days earlier in the week. Reno is truly a man of steel! Rinaldi brought team scoring to a climax as fifth man in. The "A" team felt fortunate to have 60+ yeomen Carl Gensib (44:41) and Gene Gugliotta (46:18) providing terrific backup. Way to go, guys!
And what about that Shore AC men's 50+ "B" squadron? Considering that they were composed entirely of 60+ graybeards, they did okay in finishing fifth out of six teams. Staying one step ahead of the glue factory, Scott Linnell clopped into the barn on grizzled legs in 44:01 to start team scoring. A feisty Harry Pino followed, spinning a spiffy 46:26 in the chilly morning air. Now-retired avid traveler Paul Deykerhoff wished he were still in balmy New Mexico as he shivered his way to a 55:33 finish. Race walker extraordinaire Tim Chelius switched his gait to a fast jog for this event, tripping the timer in 59:50 to achieve his sub-hour goal. Finally, to everyone's great delight, we welcomed back Dan Murphy to the racing circuit after medical treatment. His circulatory improvements passed muster 1:13:09. We were simply glad that he reached the finish line!
The previously mentioned bevy of Shore AC 60+ athletes enabled us to enter two men's 60+ teams as well. But a setback occurred. For the first time in 2021, the Shore AC men's 60+ "A" team did not win a state-level race. We were scooped by Garmin, which had assembled a terrific trio led by Beau Atwater. They beat us handily. Note, however, that our lead man Salamone left Beau in the dust with his screaming time of 40:09. Gensib and Gugliotta filled out the "A" team's scoring positions while Pino manned the rear guns. The Shore AC men's 60+ "B" team easily seized third place just behind our "A" team. Stirrat carried the "B" team chevron. He was followed by Linnell and Nowicki as team scorers and Deykerhoff, Chelius and Murphy offering insurance.
All told, Shore AC reaped a superb 95 club points at Giralda. This points haul stacked our silo to a sky-high 539 (unofficial) club point tally, by far the best among USATF-NJ clubs. With one race to go, namely the Ashenfelter 8K on Thanksgiving morning, will Shore AC top 600 points? Tune in next week to find out!
Our more experienced Shore AC cowboys in the 40+ category routinely face overwhelming competition from two other clubs, namely Garmin and Garden State. This day was no different. Nevertheless, the roughriders in white singlets easily bested the other four teams in the rodeo.
