Shore AC Wraps Up 2021 with a Brilliant Ashenfelter 8K
Just as the traditional Thanksgiving table overflows with delectable dishes, every year the Ashenfelter 8K fills the streets of Glen Ridge with runners by the thousands. This year 2021 was no exception, as roughly 3500 athletes registered for the event and over 2300 finished. The race represented the conclusion of the USATF New Jersey Association's 2021 Paul Miller Auto Group Long Distance Running Club/Team Grand Prix. Participating clubs recognized a final opportunity to chock up more points, so they showed up in droves.
While Shore AC's numbers didn't match the huge participation rates of earlier races this year, our representatives brought outstanding quality to make up for the relative paucity in numbers. This was essential, given the cascade of superb runners from other clubs. One club in particular, Garden State Track Club, punctuated their pre-eminent position in the state by flooding the field with tremendous teams. Though Shore AC had to swim mightily upstream to stay close, they achieved success -- especially in the women's division.
We begin with the Shore AC women's 60+ team. Buoyed by the return of national age group champion Nora Cary as she rehabilitates a minor injury, these intrepid ladies improved their 2021 record to 5 victories in 6 attempts in the USATF-NJ Grand Prix. Cary's scintillating 35:27 was followed by a superb 37:55 performance by Diane Rothman as second team scorer. Shore area denizen Kim Hart made her foray north of the Raritan River worthwhile by spinning a strong 40:37 web to help the team snare first place. Teammates Susan Stirrat (41:19) and Luz Ravines (46:15) added excellent insurance, which guaranteed victory had Cary not raced. That's teamwork, folks!
On the women's 50+ front, Shore AC suffered their only loss of the season but still secured second *and* third place within a field of twelve teams. Our 58-year-old sensation Suzanne La Burt continued her phenomenal streak of races with age grading above 90% as she tripped the timer in 31:32, good for a 93.10% AG. W-O-W!!! Fabulous freshman Ali Marzulla flashed a fancy 33:26 as second team scorer. She just missed the 80% AG threshold (79.99%) while notching fourth place in a 50-54 age group that has become brutally competitive this year. Highly decorated Laura DeLea willed her aching body to another remarkable finish in 35:03, completing "A" team scoring garnering second place in the 55-59 age group and an impressive 81.76% AG. Meanwhile, Kerry Monahan Gaughan powered across the finish line with a terrific 36:36 to back up the team. Hart joined Gaughan in the rear guard of the "A" team.
The Shore AC women's 60+ "B" team consisted entirely of 60+ gals. Cary, Rothman, Stirrat and Ravines pooled their talents to land the last spot (third place) on the podium. Kudos, ladies!
So, you ask, who disrupted Shore AC's clean sweep of the Grand Prix in the women's 50+ team category? You guessed it: Garden State. Their potent trio of Hortencia Aliaga (who aged up in the past month), Kimberly Aspholm and Kathleen Beebe has raised the performance bar for this age group. You can bet that Shore AC plans to respond in 2022!
As good as Garden State may be in the 50+ category, they are even faster and deeper in 40+. It would take a near superhuman effort for Shore AC to top the ladies in yellow and black. And that's just what we got! National masters 12K champion Roberta Groner spearheaded the Shore AC women's 40+ "A" team with a world-class time of 26:35. Not only did Roberta win the women's race by over 2 minutes, but she nailed the top age grading among all runners with 94.12%. Roberta's unbelievable time gave the Shore AC team a superb start, but we would need terrific contributions from her teammates to win the 40+ team competition. Karen dos Santos (32:39) and Lauren Jackson (32:45) answered the call and delivered! Actually, those familiar with Karen's and Lauren's capabilities will recognize that those are slow times for these harriers. Both are dealing with nagging health issues and are looking forward to some time off and then bounce back strong in 2022. As for backup insurance, DeLea provided this important role for our victorious squad. Brava, ladies!
Look at the women's 40+ team results and you will see Garden State occupying slots 2, 3 and 4, corroborating their impressive breadth and depth, You might wonder which team was fifth? Why, it was the Shore AC women's 40+ "B" team! Christie Nie marked her first team race of 2021 with an outstanding 32:56 result. Christie earned first place in the 45-49 age group and posted a magnificent age grading of 79.45%. After Gaughan grabbed the second scoring spot on the team, Kim Anicito punched in with a fine 38:16 to conclude team scoring and secure fifth place for the "B" team. Way to go, ladies!!!
This brings us to the most competitive category: the Open division. Get this: Garden State entered four teams, and they beat *all* other teams within a field of 13 teams...save one: Shore AC! Though we entered only one team, it was a humdinger! Groner of course led the change. The second runner was our only under-40 athlete on the team: 30-year-old Amanda Eller. She tore up the single-loop course with a scorching 29:06 to place fourth among all women. La Burt, dos Santos and Jackson completed team scoring while Nie, Marzulla and Anicito contributed insurance. Congratulations, ladies, on a superb second-place finish!

Let us now turn our attention to the men. We begin with those graying gents in the 60+ category. After uncharacteristically losing at the previous USATF-NJ race (the Giralda Farms 10K), our Shore AC men on the 60+ "A" team regained their winning form. As he has done often this year, Mike Salamone led the charge. His magnificent 30:42 not only placed him atop the 60-64 age group, it earned Mike a top ten ranking among all men in the age grading scale with an outstanding 84.77%. Next in line among team scorers came the venerable Reno Stirrat. He posted a smashing 33:26 to rule his 65-69 age group with a 2-minute margin. Rookie Gene Gugliotta rounded out the scoring trio when he broke the plane in 35:12. Fellow newcomer Harry Pino clocked an excellent 35:42 in a backup role, ensuring that the "A" team would vie for top honors.
In grand Shore AC tradition, the men's 60+ "B" team outgunned eight other squads in the race by placing fifth. Freshman Jamie Button got the ball rolling with a terrific 36:24. Rob Neugass delivered an impressive 37:44 a mere 2 weeks after twisting an ankle. Paul Deykerhoff polished off team scoring with his solid 42:24. Race walker Eliot Collins added insurance with his 1:11:37. Way to pile on 6 more points to the club total for Shore AC, guys!
The Shore AC men's 50+ teams acquitted themselves honorably at Ashenfelter. The "A" team battled its way onto the podium with a third-place showing. Versatile triathlete Ken Ginsburg spearheaded the "A" team's efforts with his lightning-quick 30:31. After Salamone crossed, Terry Lusardi muscled through the finish as third team scorer in 32:24. A minute later, Scott Isgett flew across the tarmac in 33:20 to notch the team's fourth scoring position. Stirrat wrapped up team scoring seconds later, with Luke Falk trailing close behind in 33:50 to add insurance. Bravo, guys!
The Shore AC men's 50+ "B" battalion consisted entirely of men over age 60. Gugliotta led this merry band, followed by Pino, Button, Neugass, Deykerhoff and insurance man Collins. Their sixth-place finish contributed 5 points to the club's Grand Prix score. Yippee!
As we venture further down in age to the 40+ category, we naturally find the competition becoming fiercer. Our boys in white singlets eked out a fifth-place finish here among eleven teams. First-year sensation Joe Maranzani blazed the trail for Shore AC, hitting paydirt in 30:11. After Ginsburg checked in as second man, Mike Raples stormed across the threshold in a fantastic 32:07. Lusardi and Isgett completed team scoring, while Falk and Bob Skorupski (34:05) ensured backup. Note that Mike DiLeva's excellent 32:30 would have been included on the Shore AC 40+ team except for a clerical error. Team Captain Scott Linnell submitted his name as "Mike DiLeva" without noticing that Mike registered as "Mike Dileva". Consequently, the new automated timing system excluded Mike from the Shore AC 40+ and OPen teams.
Competition peaked at white-hot scorching in the men's open division. Shore AC's open team fared well, placing fifth behind four Garden State squads. New Shore AC stallion Elliot Gindi carried the team with his incredible 24:32 performance, good for second place overall in the race. JP Montgomery kicked in a phenomenal 26:30 to help deliver a superb 1-2 punch. Unfortunately, the team lacked open-level depth beyond this point. It must be noted here, though, that the team captain (yours truly, Scott Linnell) overlooked Billy Washer's name in the list of registrants and failed to add Billy to the team roster. Billy's excellent 27:46 would have catapulted the team up to third place! Instead, it was Maranzani finishing as third team scorer. He was followed by Raples and then workhorse Antonio Meza Soriano in 33:29 to complete team scoring. Hot on Antonio's heels came Shore AC stud Justin Scheid in 33:52, pushing a stroller and giving his leg muscles a break after placing fifth in the JFK 50-miler only 5 days prior. Skorupski crossed seconds afterwards as second insurance man. Hooray, team!
