And when all contestants had crossed the finish line and the judges announced team results, the crowd erupted with thunderous applause. Shore AC had won every age category -- except 40+ -- for both men and women. HOORAY!!!

70+ Women:
The septuagenarian ladies from Shore Athletic Club climbed every mountain in the race -- and fast! They finished a perfect 1-2-3 in their competition against Central Jersey Road Running Club. Susan Stirrat led the way despite still healing a sprained ankle. Her time of 29:56 ranked above all women aged 70 or over. The next team member to cross the finish line was Jo Ann Coffee. He speedy 31:34 not only ranked her first in the 75-59 age group, it provided the 77-year-old with a fine 73.7% age grading that placed her sixth among masters women. Teammate Mary Beth Campau wrapped a pretty bow around this team's scoring when she sailed over the timing mat at 35:27. Brava, ladies!
60+ Women:
Perhaps inspired by the 70+ gals, our age 60+ crew performed a sweep of their own. They scored a flawless 1-2-3-4 within a field of 12 ladies. Leading the charge was superstar Suzanne La Burt. Her insanely fast 22:20 ranked the 63-year-old as fifth female overall with a scintillating age grading of 84.8% -- head-and-shoulders better than all other runners in the race. Although fans would wait a full four minutes before the next W60+ team member crossed the finish line, the second-place finisher still registered an outstanding time. Diane Rothman, at age 68, outkicked a 13-year-old boy to finish line in 26:22 and grabbed first place in her 65-69 age group. Moreover, she age graded a superb 77.0% to rank third among all women. Team scoring reached a flourishing finish when Marie Capdevielle motored over the timing mat in 28:20. By doing so, Marie snatched second place in the women's 65-69 age group. Great teams have great backup. Ours was past-and-now-present Shore AC member Chris Prorock-Rogers. Chris wrapped up her peppy race in 29:23, beating all other 8 women in the age 60+ team competition. Tremendous teamwork, ladies!
50+ Women:
Amazingly, our age 50+ women's squad nailed a sweep as well! With La Burt scorching the path as leading lady, Maureen Massell hustled along not too far behind. Massell's excellent time of 24:57 earned her first place in the women's 55-59 age group (excluding Dianne DeOliveira and Kim Aspholm, who both placed among the top 10 overall and were thus not counted in the 55-59 age group standings). Longtime teammate Alysia Puma scurried over the timing mat at 25:27, notching first place in the women's 50-54 age group (that similarly excluded Elena Rozhko and Stella Barry because they finished among the top 10 overall). With Rothman providing all-important insurance, the team stuck a perfect 1-2-3-4 landing. Way to go, ladies!!!
40+ Women:
A Shore AC sweep across all women's age group teams would have been fun, but the 40+ crew from Bella 'N Motion had other ideas. Their trio, led by the incomparable and one-time Shore AC member Dianne DeOliveira, did to us what our older teams did to other clubs: score a perfect 1-2-3. But our 40+ band did the next-best thing. They went 4-5-6, beating two other teams. With Massell and Puma notching the first and second scoring positions, Kim Anicito put together a very solid 25:49 to wrap up team scoring. Susan Stirrat served as backstop. Our second-place finish increased our lead in the 2026 Team Grand Prix by 2 points, yielding an 18-point margin over second-place Fleet Feet / Essex. Go, gals, go!
Open Women:
As Woody Allen said, "80% of success is showing up". So it went with our Shore AC Open Women team. They showed up. No other club entered an Open Women team. Ergo, we won. Spearheading our attack was 28-year-old Gypsy Cooper. She found the middle portion of the Natirar course to be reminiscent of the back bowl at famous Holmdel Park. Having grown up in Holmdel, she seemed right at home. Gypsy thrashed the course with a monster 19:12 performance. Not only did she win the women's race, but Gypsy placed fifth overall and only 12 seconds behind the third-place male! Under-40 teammate Erika Flores placed second, contributing a superb 20:52 to keep the joint rocking. Anicito, Capdevielle and Prorock-Rogers fleshed out our Open team's scoring while Coffee and Campau provided backup. As a result of this uncontested victory, our Shore AC Open Women team has now opened up a vast 30-point lead in the 2026 Team Grand Prix. Keep it up, ladies!

70+ Men:
The septuagenarian men from Shore Athletic Club were prepared to do better than their best in an anticipated showdown with their powerful contemporaries from Fleet Feet / Essex. Blessed with numbers and strength, our boys brimmed with confidence. Volunteer Bridgewater/Raritan HS coach Hal Leddy burst forth across the finish line first with a blazing 22:48. Master coffee brewer Mike Ayars turned on the steam and roasted the course in 23:30 as the team's second scorer. Team scoring came to a dramatic conclusion when the nationally renowned running great Reno Stirrat cranked his gams to streak across the timing strip in 24:13. Just in case any of our top three men were to falter, Scott Linnell was there providing backup in 26:11. We had confidence in victory. When team results were announced after the race, our confidence was rewarded, but in a hollow manner. Shore AC was declared to have the *only* team in the men's 70+ category. Essex had chosen to sacrifice an M70+ team in favor of having a Men's Open team. Consequently, we opened up a 12-point gap on Essex in the 2026 Grand Prix. We sport 28 points to their 16. Next stop on the Grand Prix will be the Haworth 5K on September 19. Here's hoping we can have a proper showdown there with our good friends from Fleet Feet / Essex!
60+ Men:
For more than a decade, Shore AC has dominated the men's 60+ team competition in the state of New Jersey. We continued our hegemony at this 5K cross country tilt. Our "A" and "B" teams went 1-2. We even had enough gents to enter a "C" team, which notched 6th place within a field of 7 teams.
The Shore AC "A" squad was anchored by our incredible ace, Carlos Nunes. He out-kicked Brian Crowley, one of the top age 60+ runners in the country, winning by a 9-second margin in 19:29. Leddy and Ayars completed team scoring while Don Schwartz smacked a towering 23:42 shot as insurance man. This quartet's brilliant 1-3-4-5 finish secured an air-tight winning team score of 8 points.
As for the Shore AC "B" crew, they fought a tense battle with Amazing Feet's "A" squad. Our side appeared on the scoreboard when Stirrat crossed at 24:13. Not long after, Mike Heal employed his Patagonia trail training to snag a gorgeous 24:50. Hot on Mike's heels, Coach Gary Wiesinger demonstrated how 68-year-old legs can still get the job done by crossing in 25:00 flat. But would our "B" crew's team score of 28 suffice for second place? Backup runner Linnell did his part, displacing both the opponent's #2 and #3 runners. The additional 2 points gave Amazing Feet 29 points total. Bravo, "B" team!
New Shore AC member Mark McCormack made a delightful debut as leading man for our 60+ "C" company. Mark successfully navigated the winding course in 27:13. With Richko and Wilson flashing out the team scoring, this trio earned 55 points. That was enough to clip Amazing Feet's "B" team. Well done, lads!
50+ Men:
Shore AC's large "family" size helped with regard to the men's 50+ competition. Of the three teams in the competition, two were ours!
With Nunes blazing the trail for the Shore AC men's 50+ "A" team, speedster Mike O'Connor grabbed the team's #2 scoring spot with a sensational 20:27. Denis Keenan followed with a fabulous 21:36 as third man. At this point in the race, our Shore AC lads held a tenuous 1-point lead of 10 points (1-3-6) to Amazing Feet's 11 points (2-4-5). This was where Shore AC's impressive depth paid off. Dan Campbell came thundering down the final stretch just 7 seconds behind Denis to register the team's fourth score (7). Not too much later, John Delaney surged across the finish line in 23:29 to slam the door on our "A" team's scoring. The score was a nifty 26 (1-3-5-7-9). Volunteer extraordinaire Mike DiLeva made the most of his backup role, displacing Amazing Feet's #4 and #5 runners with his solid 24:27. Amazing Feet finished with a score of 41 (2-4-5-14-16).
Shore AC's M50+ "B" team made waves of its own. Newcomer Dave Wrede celebrated his first SAC team race with an astounding 22:25 to lead the "B" squad. Schwartz, Heal, Wiesinger and McCormack completed this quick quintet. They boasted a composite score of 58 points (8-10-12-13-15). Bravo, boys!
40+ Men:
While Shore AC fended them off in the 60+ and 50+ team categories, Amazing Feet brought the heat in 40+ and outdistanced us for the win. But it was close! Our dynamic daredevils bagged the first point in this intense dogfight, with champion race walker Rich Luettchau rocketing across the hilly 5K course at warp speed, finishing in 18:22. After Amazing Feet's Derrick Jani secured the #2 position in 19:00, our newly minted masters runner Billy Washer jetted across the finish line close behind in 19:07. Alas, Amazing Feet answered with two more top 40+ harriers in Sabahoglu (19:22) and Gulish (19:45). O'Connor (20:27) then notched our #3 spot. With 3 runners home for both teams, SHore AC held a thin 1-point lead at 10 points (1-3-6) to Amazing Feet's 11 points (2-4-5). However, we couldn't match their #4 and #5 whizzes, namely Grillo (20:32) and Flynn (21:07). Keenan (21:36) and Campbell (21:43) certainly made it close! Kudos that all out you great guys!!
Open Men:
Von Trapp-like depth paid off for Shore AC in the Open Men team category as well. Each of the five clubs that entered a team relied on masters (age 40+) runners to flesh out their rosters. Thanks to our much more numerous masters ranks, we could assign faster #4 and #5 runners to our Open team than could our competition. With Luettchau and Washer pounding the turf in front, freshman fireball Ryan Rogers nailed down our #3 spot with a superb 20:25 performance. Wrede and Delaney wrapped up team scoring while DiLeva contributed critical insurance. Our team score of 40 points comfortably surpassed rival Raritan Valley's 52-point total. Shore AC now holds a 48-37 lead over RVRR in the Open Men aspect of the 2026 USATF-NJ LDR Team Grand Prix. Go, men, GOOO!!!
