Shore AC Storms the Stage at USATF Club XC Nationals on a "Two-Fer" Weekend
This year's USATF National Club Cross Country Championships gave participants a bonus never before seen. In addition to competing in our own national races, we got to witness the World Athletics Cross Country Championships on the same course the prior day. It was a much-savored "two-fer" deal! (The World XC event was so successful that World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe even recommended that the XC championships be held permanently in Tallahassee.)
Perhaps drawing inspiration from the World XC Championships, Shore AC teams and individuals put on a show of their own. Of the 10 Shore AC teams entered, 3 made the podium. Two of them continued their spotless records in the 2026 USATF Masters National Grand Prix, with the women's 60+ and men's 70+ teams winning their second races in as many attempts. In addition, our 80+ men snared second place. Other Shore AC squads made their marks as well. The Men’s Open team finished 8th overall, their best finish ever here. The W40+ placed 8th, W50+ 7th, W60+ B 4th, M60+ 11th, M40+ 8th. We also had 4 women run strong in the Open Women race, one short of the team minimum.
Let's begin our recounting of Shore AC team efforts with the first event of the day: the women's masters tilt.

Women's 40+ team
Welcome back, ladies! Three years ago, the Shore AC W40+ crew rose to national prominence, winning the 2023 Grand Prix. However, it's been mostly absent since then, running one race in 2024 and zero in 2025. This is perfectly understandable, as so many of our 40+ harriers have young children to tend. What joy we therefore felt in putting a W40+ team on the starting line in Tallahassee!
Club veteran Karen Dos Santos led the charge for our 40+ gals. Primed by extensive half marathon training, she started strong and just kept hammering. As Karen reported afterwards, she picked off several foes in her final 2K loop including a couple athletes from in-state rival Garden State Track Club. When she crossed the finish line in 23:48, Karen has climbed up to 17th overall and 15th among scorers on 40+ teams. Next for the ladies in white singlets came newcomer Karen Waltz. Karen pursues a variety of sports. Her cross training paid off as she broke the timing plane in a speedy 27:09, good for 29 points. Team scoring came to a conclusion when Shore AC club president Erin O'Neill roared across the timing mats in 29:33. Her 35 points gave the team a total score of 79. That placed them 1 point ahead of Atlanta Track Club's W40+ team in eighth place. Our W40+ team is now on the 2026 National LDR Grand Prix scoreboard with 45 points. Here's hoping that we can keep the momentum going!!!
Women's 50+ team
The "many happy returns" theme applied to our women's 50+ team as well. Familiar faces that led our W50+ team to second place in the 2024 National Grand Prix but went missing in 2025 now showed up in Tallahassee -- to everyone's delight! Ali Marzulla got the reunion party started. She completed the 3-loop course in a rapid 28:32, garnering 18 points to kick off team scoring. Shore AC fans were still cheering her finish when teammate Alysia Puma scurried under the finish line arch 11 seconds later in 28:43. Spectators hardly had a chance to catch their breath before third woman Maureen Massell rocketed home with a vicious kick to trip the timer in 29:17. When team scores were tallied, our count of 62 points comfortably edged out both Atlanta Track Club and Genesee Valley Harriers for seventh place. Well done, ladies!
Women's 60+ teams
Race aficionados anticipated a slugfest among three teams in the women's 60+ contest: Greater Philadelphia Track Club, Liberty Athletic Club and Shore Athletic Club. This team captain saw no gap among the evenly matched squads. However, misfortune struck Greater Philly in the days before the race. Their projected #1 and #2 runners were unable to attend, leaving them one lady short of having a 60+ team.
The race now boiled down to a duel between Liberty and Shore AC. Who would win? Our leading lady, Suzanne La Burt, focused her body and soul on a favorable outcome for herself and her team. The fervor paid off. Suzanne destroyed the 60+ field, triumphing by a margin of 54 seconds. Her time of 25:31 equated to an age grading of 88.2%, good for second place among all masters women. The Shore AC W60+ A team was off to a great start. But could their advantage be sustained? Sophomore sensation Pam Ricker said yes! A surprise winner of the 2025 USATF Masters National W60-64 Individual Grand Prix, Pam proved that was no fluke. She ripped a blazing 26:50 to place third among all 60+ women. In doing so, she grabbed the #2 scoring position among 60+ teams. Armed with a 1-2 start, Shore AC now held a significant scoring advantage. Would it hold up? Forty seconds later, Mimi Fallon put Liberty on the scoreboard with her 3 points. Pundits knew that Liberty's Mary Cass wouldn't be far behind, and that Lauren Leslie and Victoria Bok lurked too close for comfort. You can imagine the relief when the crowd let out a thunderous roar as Shore AC's Nora Cary emerged from the mud obstacle and began her final descent towards the finish line. This 70-year-old global phenomenon continued building her legacy with a scorching 27:55, yielding the top age grading among the masters women of 90.0%. More importantly, Nora might say, she nailed the #4 scoring position, handing her Shore AC team a victorious low-low score of 1-2-4 = 7 points. But the team wasn't done! Backup harrier Donna Grocki delivered the coup de grace, icing the team's win with a terrific 29:45 and the #11 scoring spot. Brava, ladies!!!
Shore AC had a women's 60+ B team as well in this contest. This gave 69-year-old Kitty Musante the rare pleasure of running on a 60+ team rather than 50+ or 40+. (Both Kitty and Suzanne La Burt live outside of New Jersey. A USATF Masters LDR residency rule limits teams to at most one out-of-region runner, which prevents Kitty and Suzanne from running on the same 60+ team.) Kitty thrashed her home-state course in 28:50. By doing so, not only did she seize the #7 scoring spot among 60+ team runners, but she achieved the third best age grading (85.9%) among all masters women in the race. Completing the B team were two celebrated club veterans. Buoyed by receiving her third-place medal in the 2025 Individual Grand Prix for W60-64 at a ceremony the night before, Leslie Nowicki churned out a strong 33:22 to post 18 points. Leslie's 70-year-old teammate Susan Stirrat bustled across the finish line a mere 4 seconds later in 33:26. With a second-place medal in the 2025 Individual Grand Prix for W65-69 still fresh on her mind, Susan registered a huge contribution towards her 2026 Individual Grand Prix campaign by placing second in the 70-74 age group. As a team, this trio of ladies finished fourth. They outperformed both the Genesee Valley A team and the Atlanta B team. Hooray!

We now switch gears to the masters men's age 60+ race. Shore AC entered three teams into this donnybrook: 60+, 70+ and 80+.
Men's 60+ team
Just 3 years ago on what was basically the same Tallahassee course, the men's age 60+ team from Shore Athletic Club stunned the masters running community with a convincing victory. Agog, people assumed that a dynasty had emerged. Alas, our hold on the top proved tenuous. Injuries and relocation dissipated our puissance such that, by 2025, we failed to enter enough races (3) to qualify for a Grand Prix ranking.
But hope springs eternal! One pillar of that hope is a highly decorated member of the championship 2023 squad: 64-year-old Rick Lee. Advancing age may have slowed Rick by a step or two, but he's still a tornado. Rick whirled around the 4-loop course like the Tasmanian Devil, spinning a jaw-dropping 31:01 to score a magnificent 4 points. Second-year star Alberto Perez spun a highly respectable 34:38 as our #2 scorer. But symbolic of the Shore AC M60+ team's decline, aging Scott Linnell hobbled to an abysmal 43:37 on a compromised hamstring. His 78 points relegated the team to an 11th-place finish out of 20 teams. Our troupe was happy, though, to welcome newcomer Brian Hanse. Perhaps more at home on a basketball court than a cross-country course, Brian persevered through the entire 8 kilometers and crossed the line in 56:37 as our insurance man. Let's keep at it, boys! :-)
Men's 70+ team
Wanna see hunger incarnate? Take a look at the Shore AC men's 70+ squad. Even since the nationally renowned Reno Stirrat turned 70 early last year, he has yearned to assemble a team that can beat perennial juggernaut Boulder Road Runners. Reno's dream took concrete form when Jim Linn joined the club and then Hal Leddy and Kevin Dollard aged up. People took notice when this fearsome foursome crushed the competition at the national 5K race in Atlanta last October. They did it again two months later at the National Cross Country Championships in Portland, Oregon, annihilating the field with a dominant 1-2-4-(8) finish for a near-perfect score of 7. And their ravenous desire for a National Grand Prix championship gnaws at their insides. These guys are insatiable!
Pre-race analysis slightly favored our Shore AC septuagenarians. However, the competition at Club XC always impresses with its insane quality and depth. Of course, nemesis Boulder posed the toughest challenge on paper, but Syracuse and HOKA Aggie snapped very close behind and threatened to upset us should our team falter. When the gun sounded, the incomparable John Barbour of Greater Lowell Road Runners surged to the lead among 70+ runners and never looked back. All eyes instead turned to the battle for second place. Dollard spearheaded to Shore AC attack, keeping pace with Jack Pottle of Boulder. Leddy shadowed them a handful of seconds behind. Meanwhile, Linn kept his eyes trained on the two HOKA Aggies stars, namely Thomas Cushman and Doug Steedman. In the fourth and final lap of the 4-loop race, Dollard lit his afterburners and opened a small gap on Pottle. Kevin finished in an absolutely superb 35:21, good for second place among all 70+ runners. After Pottle came through in 35:28, Hal barreled across the timing strip in 35:39 to secure the #4 scoring spot among 70+ team runners. After Cushman and Steedman staggered over the threshold, Jim hurtled the covered timing wires at 36:17 to complete team scoring with his 7 points. Shore AC's total team score of 2-4-7 = 13 solidly beat Boulder's 24 points. Regrettably, Stirrat's hip acted up early in the race, compelling Reno to slow down and lose impact in the scoring. He finished in 39:07. But you can bet that Reno will be BAAACKKK!!!
Men's 80+ team
Last year, Shore AC's men's age 80+ team snared the USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix Championship with relative ease. In each of their 3 races, they at most one other team. Pre-race analysis of the 80+ field for these Club XC Championships portended much choppier waters. Our octogenarians now faced three other teams. And among them was a perennial dreadnought -- Boulder -- as well as a potent gang from Greater Philadelphia. On paper, our fate seemed to be third place.
As expected, Boulder's #1 and #2 guys, Jeffrey Dumas and William Repphun, went out fast and kept their pace. Greater Philadelphia's Thomas Jennings ducked in behind them and stayed close. Our two leading men, Jack Frame and Przemek Nowicki, tried their best to hang with the leaders. But by the third and fourth laps, they had to let their competitors go. Nevertheless, our heroes still maintained a very solid pace allowing them to finish in the #4 and #5 scoring positions, respectively, in 46:55 and 47:39. Attention now shifted to our remaining guys. Could they knock off enough foes to secure second place or even first place for the team? It wasn't long before Boulder's third man, legendary Jan Frisby, settled matters. He crossed in 52:00 to earn 7 points and lock in Boulder as the team champion. But second place was still wide open! Ed Bligh put Atlanta into contention when he sailed home in 50:19 for the #6 slot. And after Frisby finished, Atlanta grabbed the #8 position while Greater Philly secured the #9 spot. At this point, Shore AC had the inside track for second place with 9 points, while Greater Philly sported 12 points and Atlanta 14. The odds favored Shore AC, but their two remaining runners needed to finish. Just when fans began to doubt, there at the crest of the hill above the finish line appeared Roland Cormier! In short order, he motored down the final stretch and underneath the arch in 1:02:22, good for the #10 position. As a result, the Shore AC M80+ team earned second place! For good measure, Coach John Kuhi guaranteed the second place team title when he crossed in 1:18:43 to snare the #13 spot. Well done, gentlemen!!!
After the age 60+ masters men completed their rumble, it was time for the age 40+ masters men to test their mettle. We had hoped to enter Shore AC 40+ and 50+ teams into this race. Unfortunately, we mustered only enough guys for a 40+ squad.
January 11, 2026, Tallahassee, FL: Most of the Shore AC men's 40+ team stands "race ready" prior to entering the clerking tent for team check-in. Left to right: Dan Campbell, Clive Cooper, Shane Anthony, Justin Scheid and Patrick Anderson. Not pictured: Scott Siriano.
Men's 40+ team
As with the 40+ women, it can be especially difficult for 40+ men to attend a distant race given their work and family obligations -- even when it's the biggest race of the year! We felt fortunate to have enough men to populate a Shore AC M40+ team. It required us sliding the members of our incomplete men's 50+ team down to the 40+ team roster. Sadly, that left Jeff Conston without a team. He fell victim to the residency rule, which dictated that only he or Shane Anthony could be included on the 40+ team roster. Undeterred, Jeff ran with gusto and pounded out a magnificent time of 40:18 in his solo effort.
Shore AC partisans were excited that our 40+ team featured Justin Scheid, winner of the 2025 Vermont 100 mile trail race. He dynamited the 10-kilometer course in a scorching time of 33:27 to finish fifth within the field of 197 runners. Interestingly, Justin edged out in-state rival Brian Flynn of Garden State Track Club by 4 seconds. Second-year star Shane Anthony delivered a tour de force performance, coming within 0.4 second of making the podium in the 55-59 age group while clocking 36:29.8. Another sophomore standout, Patrick Anderson, cranked out a rocking 39:52 as third team scorer. Long-time Shore AC member and CBA graduate Dan Campbell snared the #4 scoring position when he crossed the timing mat in 43:14. Team scoring can to a close when another second-year harrier, Clive Cooper, hobbled home in 44:28 on a damaged calf muscle. Moments later, sixth man Scott Siriano provided backup insurance when he crossed in 44:44. Our boys placed 7th within a field of 14 teams. Thanks to their efforts, the team now has 50 points in the 2026 Grand Prix. Let hope for more to come!

January 11, 2026, Tallahassee, FL: The masters men's 40+ field tackles the "roller coaster", the first of five obstacles that were all obligatory for the Open races but in two cases (the water pit and the alligator hurdles) were optional for the masters events.

Justin Scheid applies his ferocious kick to finish 5th in a scorching 33:27 for 10K,
|
Shane Anthony hammers his finish, just missing the 55-59 podium by 0.4 second in 36:29.8.

Patrick Anderson makes the most of his first-ever USATF national masters race, clocking 39:52.
|
Jeff Conston revels in the Florida sunshine as he cranks out an excellent 40:18.

After the masters men's 40+ race concluded, the course was prepared for the Open Women and Open Men races that would follow. Harriers in these two races would be required to traverse not only the roller coaster, sand pit and mud pit that masters runners had to negotiate, but also the water pit and alligator hurdles that masters runners had the option to bypass.
January 11, 2026, Tallahassee, FL: The Shore AC Open Women team stands ready to check in and rise to the challenge of the National Club XC Championships. Left to right: Jenna Lozzi. Suzanne Zaugg, Erika Flores and Gypsy Cooper. Sadly, Amanda Marino Huneke fell ill and could not attend the race. Consequently, we were one person short of having a complete team.
Women's Open team
A buzz circulated within the Shore AC community during the weeks before the race. For the first time since Club XC in 2021, the club would have a complete Open Women team at a national cross-country race. Alas, cruel fate had other plans. The day before the race, Amanda Marino Huneke fell ill and wisely stayed home. Before we had no backup runner, the team was one runner short of the minimum of 5 for a valid team. Ever the problem-solver, 44-year-old Karen Dos Santos, already a member of the Shore AC women's masters 40+ team, volunteered to add herself to the Open team. That would mean her running in two races, not just one. But that was minutes after 5:00 pm, so the deadline for race entry had already passed. The die was now cast: there would be no Shore AC Open Women team.
Nevertheless, the four remaining ladies on the team showed up on Sunday morning and ran in the race. Freshman phenom Gypsy Cooper led the group, navigating the 3-loop course in a torrid 23:29. Second-year speedster Suzanne Zaugg flashed the fitness that she had built up doing Shore AC Cross Country races in Monmouth County, nailing a superb 24:42. Shore AC coach Erika Flores crossed the finish line next for the team at 25:51, handling the 5 different obstacles on the course with aplomb. Mere seconds later, teammate Jenna Lozzi scooted over the timing mat in 26:09. Well done, ladies!

Men's Open team
The goal of our Shore AC Open Men team was to finish better than they did at last year's Club XC meet in Tacoma, Washington. There they finished 39th out of 51 teams. Perhaps more importantly, they finished far behind in-state Garden State Track Club, which snared 20th place at Tacoma. I make this point because of how closely the two teams battled at Tallahassee. For most of the race, the team rankings on the jumbotron showed Garden State in 7th place holding a tenuous lead over 8th-place Shore AC. At one point, Shore AC even snuck ahead of GSTC. In the end, Garden State secured seventh place with 215 points while Shore AC settled for eighth place with 237 points. What a delightful sub-plot it was for New Jersey fans to witness these two in-state rivals slug it out!
Poignantly, Shore AC's unit was led this year by ace Jordan Brannan. Jordan was the second-place finisher on GSTC's A team at Tacoma. Here in Tallahassee, he pounded out a superb 32:27 to get the Shore AC gang rolling. Next for the boys in white singlets came two amazing brothers: Troy Hill and Brian Hill. They are third-generation royalty within the Shore Athletic Club. Their grandfather, Dick Hill, competed for Shore AC across many decades. Father Brian Hill connected with the club at a young age and has been with us ever since, even serving as team captain before the demands of raising five children forced him to hand off the duties to yours truly back in 2008. Troy and Brian made their predecessors proud. Both kept within shouting distance of Jordan throughout the 5 loops of the course, with Brian in front of Troy. In the final loop, Troy put on a tremendous surge and finished just 3 seconds behind Jordan in 32:30. Although Brian faded a bit in the final stretch, his 32:39 still rated exceptionally fantastic. Dedicated distance runner Michael Bond scored a fabulous 33:19 as the team's #4 finisher. Team scoring wrapped up when Colts Neck High School coaching assistant Zack Greenberg bounded through the archway with a magnificent time of 34:43. Insurance agents Ryan Corbett (36:30) and Kyle Spector (36:56) guaranteed team success were any of the top 5 scorers were to falter. Congratulations, lads!!!
