Shore AC Ekes Out Victory at Three Bridges 5 Mile Race
Just like the movie "Bridges of Madison County", the Three Bridges 5 Mile race featured steamy drama. No, not the romantic kind that Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood stir up on the silver screen. Rather, it was the challenge of racing on sun-baked roads in tropical humidity. But despite the heat, we enjoyed vistas so beautiful that they seemed straight out of National Geographic magazine.
As with Eastwood's character, Robert Kincaid, we runners from the Shore Athletic Club were on assignment. Considering the sultry atmosphere, shooting photographs would have suited us just fine. Alas, our mission required much more sweat and toil. The club was relying on us to continue its rule of the USATF New Jersey Association's Co-Ed Team Grand Prix. Win this race and we would clinch the 2026 Co-Ed Series!
Good plots feature a strong antagonist. For our 5-mile race in the sleepy town of Three Bridges, that antagonist was the fearsome team from Fleet Feet / Essex Running Club. They entered the contest a mere 2 points behind us in the 2026 Co-Ed Series. With a win, Essex would tie us or even surge ahead of us in the series standings.
Fleet Feet / Essex arrived with a strong squad of harriers. A quick scan of the starting line crowd revealed that other clubs sported solid runners of their own. This team captain began to doubt that we Shore AC troopers could come anywhere close to our objective. For starters, several of our top runners were unable to make the race. Furthermore, some of us were just returning from injury or illness. Catastrophe felt nigh.
Thankfully, we still had two high-powered athletes within our Shore AC ranks. Sophomore sensation Carlos Nunes staked us to a fabulous lead. At 60 years of age, Carlos broke the timing plane in an astonishing 30:59 to finish third overall. More importantly, his age grading of 83.72% topped all other runners in the race. What a fabulous start! Soon thereafter, 44-year-old Karen dos Santos streaked across the finish line in 32:28. That gave Karen the overall win among women. Her age grading of 75.87% also topped all other females. How is that for a 1-2 punch?
Shore AC's next two scoring positions were filled by two ladies over age 70. Mary Beth Campau defied the dreadful weather and propelled her 75-year-old legs through the hilly course in a laudable time of 54:10. By doing so, she contributed a welcome 67.34% age grading to the cause. Ultra runner Luana Pesco Koplowitz came down from the mountain trails to join us on the roads for this race. Her remarkable time of 52:51 at age 71 equated to a valuable 64.91% age grading.
So far, pretty good. But our beloved Shore AC team still needed contributions from two more men. Who would they be? Yeoman Carl Richko answered the call. At age 76, he crafted a credible clocking of 48:36, good for an age grading of 63.84%. But we still needed one more score. Unexpectedly, it came from team captain Scott Linnell. Beset with a head cold most of the week leading up to the race, I almost chose not to race. After a deceptively encouraging first mile, exhaustion set in. Periods of walking kept me in the race. A personal worst 46:54 rendered an age grading of 60.88%. Would our average age grading of 69.4% prove enough to win?
Four other Shore AC loyalists did their best to uphold club honor amid the awful conditions. One the women's side, Chris Prorock-Rogers strode confidently to a 50:37 and corresponding age grading of 59.05, while Luz Ravines defied doctor expectations by willing her issue-riddled body across the finish line in 56:18 and a fine 55.22% age grading. Meanwhile, on the men's side, 73-year-old Jim Wright recovered from illness just in time to spin a slick 50:33, thereby notching a worthy 58.59% age grading. Usually stalwart speedster John Delaney simply had one of those days you just can't wait to put far, far behind in the rearview mirror. He trundled to a time of 44:41 to eke out an age grading of 56.55%.
When age gradings were calculated for Fleet Feet / Essex and the other four running clubs represented at Three Bridges, a shock reverberated through the ranks of Shore AC partisans. We came out on top! Essex had run well; however, their average age grading of 68.9% fell just a few tenths of a percentage point behind us. Bravo! Brava!
