Shore AC Lights Up the Night with a Sunset Classic 5 Mile Team Victory

Road runners from Shore Athletic Club started their July 4 celebration a week early.  They set off fireworks at the Sunset Classic 5 Mile USATF-NJ Co-Ed Team Championship race on June 25 in Bloomfield.  The display was timely, as our crew needed a win to move into sole possession of first place in the 2026 Co-Ed Series.

Carrying the torch for our Shore AC harriers were two highly decorated masters women.  Nora Cary led all runners in the race with a jaw-dropping 93.78% age grading.  The 71-year-old accomplished this by running the challenging 5-mile course in a stunning 37:26.  Teammate Suzanne La Burt left spectators similarly thunderstruck as she pounded out a nearly incomprehensible 93.67% age grading.  That's what happens when a 63-year-old female scorches the course in 33:34.  Sophomore stud Carlos Nunes picked up the sword from there, slicing out a superb 85.61% age grading.  He spun his success by running a magnificent 30:17 on 60-year-olg legs.  A fellow sexagenarian added his magnificent age grading to the Shore AC team score, as 62-year-old Alberto Perez ran 33:00 to achieve an 80.06% PLP.  The third and final male scorer for our SAC pack was 81-year-old Przemek Nowicki.  His superb time of 44:51 equated to an age grading of 76.72%.  The third and final female scorer for our merry crew was none other than Przemek's wife Leslie Nowicki.  She delivered an awesome 42:51 that yielded 72.61% in age grading.

When age grading scores were tallied across teams, Shore AC stood victorious.  Our average of 83.01% far outdistanced the 77.85% for second-place Fleet Feet.  As a result, Shore AC moved into the lead in the 2026 Co-Ed Series Grand Prix.

A bevy of dedicated Shore AC athletes ensured victory with tremendous backup performances.  Hats off to these heroic harriers who overcame heat, humidity and one brutal uphill climb to stick the win: Mauro Castro (35:12, 76.47%), Luis Absalon (32:18, 74.89%), Chris Moye (32:12, 71.50%), John Delaney (35:54, 70.35%), Joshua Dueger (32:59, 68.70%), Joe Maranzani (34:21, 68.13%), Jamie Button (41:24, 67.56%), Lindsay Bergman (37:22, 66.52%), Mike Washakowski (45:15, 66.39%), Bob Shields (39:00, 65.34%), Chris Prorock-Rogers (46:06, 64.83%), Carl Richko (48:11, 64.39%), Frank Novak (33:28, 63.20%), Luz Ravines (54:48, 56.73%) and new member Liz Canavan (42:28, 54.31%).
