What a Glorious Feeling! Shore AC Wins While Singin' (er, Runnin') in the Rain
New Jersey runners recognize the Ridgewood Memorial Day race series as a true classic. After all, it began way back 50 years ago in 1976. Was it any wonder then that participants this year felt like they were in an old-time movie? Maybe one from almost 75 years ago that starred Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds? That's right: Singin' in the Rain!
A steady downpour during the hour before the race set the stage. Though we had the Shore AC tent for shelter, our intrepid athletes strode undeterred through the inundation to perform their warm-ups. As a result, they were ready to waltz when the gun sounded. And what a show they put on! Shore AC teams were out in front, kicking up a storm.
Given that the Ridgewood 10K was a USATF-NJ masters men team championship race this year, the studio camera will focus on how the Shore AC masters lads fared.
M70+:
The men's age 70+ category was the only one that Shore AC did not win at Ridgewood. This was ironic because the Shore AC men's 70+ squad has ruled national competition all year. But of that Fearsome Foursome that's been stomping out national-level victories, only Reno Stirrat was available for Ridgewood. Reno gave it his all, battling the great Charlie Slaughter of Fleet Feet / Essex down to the wire. Reno barely edged out Charlie as they crossed the finish line, but Charlie was awarded first place in the men's 70-74 individual competition based on chip time (46:35 to 46:37). Another local legend, Peter Auteri, continued his comeback from medical leave by recording a solid 54:06 as second team scorer. When a key member of our Shore AC national M80+ crew, Przemek Nowicki, crossed 2 minutes later in 56:12, our team score was finalized. However, the 70+ team from Fleet Feet / Essex fared better and took first place. Backing up our valiant Shore AC M70+ efforts were another 80+ team stalwart, Jack Frame (56:47), and 76-year-old yeoman Carl Richko (59:50). We'll get 'em next time, right guys??!!
M60+:
Shore AC has ruled the men's 60+ team scene in New Jersey for at least the past decade. But this is the age when Father Time taxes away our vigor. That is why a feeder pipeline is so important for a club to remain competitive in 60+. One key addition has been 66-year-old Mike Salamone. He joined Shore AC in 2021 and has been energizing our state-level and national-level 60+ teams ever since -- that is, when he's not injured. Mike spent much of last year and early this year sidelined with frustrating Achilles issues. With those challenges now in the rear-view mirror, Mike floored the audience with a fantastic 41:38 at Ridgewood to lead our M60+ A team. Next across the finish line for our squad was a more recent addition: 64-year-old Mauro Castro. Joining the club last year, he has contributed to several team victories. Add this Ridgewood 10K feather to his cap! Mauro's 44:24 earned him third place in the 60-64 age group. Stirrat completed team scoring. Our first backup runner was Mike Salamone's contemporary and coach, Harry Pino. Also recovering from injury, Harry managed a highly respectable 48:43. The A team also included 18-year club veteran Scott Linnell, whose hideous 52:49 hopefully represents rock-bottom for him. Kudos to our M60+ "A" team for defeating talented teams from 6 other clubs!
Shore AC had enough graybeards at Ridgewood to enter a men's 60+ "B" team. Consisting of the afore-mentioned Auteri, Nowicki, Frame and Richko, they placed 7th within the dynamic field of 10 teams. Bravo, gents!
M50+:
As defending champions in the men's 50+ USATF-NJ LDR Team Grand Prix, it was disappointing for Shore AC to place second at the kick-off race of 2026, namely the Our House 4 Mile race. (See the race report here.) Our boys came to Ridgewood looking for revenge. Second-year ace Carlos Nunes set the tempo for our M50+ "A" squad, rocketing through the suburban streets to an absolutely scorching time of 36:59. His white-hot age grading of 87.71% placed the 60-year-old second among all men in the race. Fellow sophomore sensation Luis Absalon recorded a blazing 38:50 while doubling as a race guide. Our third team scorer, Denis Keenan, kept the party rocking with a high-spirited 41:05. After Salamone crossed as fourth man, night watchman John Delaney lit up the day with his superb 42:53. Hospital maven Tim McQueen assured team health with his speedy 43:29 as backup man. Way to go, guys!!
Shore AC had barely enough men to enter a 50+ "B" team. It was spearheaded by 2023 Comeback Runner of the Year Bob Shields. His magnificent 43:56 effort represented a 5-minute improvement over the April 12 Cherry Blossom 10K and a 2-minute improvement over the April 26 James Joyce Ramble 10K. After Castro crossed as second team scorer, busy Shore AC volunteer Mike DiLeva scooted over the final hill and across the timing mats in a fine 47:01. Pino and Linnell completed team scoring. Our "B" pack placed 6th out of 8 teams to pick up 5 valuable Club Grand Prix points. Hip! Hip! Hooray!
M40+:
Just like in a good movie, we saved the best for last. Our Shore AC men's 40+ troop, also defending Grand Prix champions, had likewise settled for second place at the Our House 4 Miler. Ridgewood presented them the chance to counterattack their nemesis, Amazing Feet. With Nunes leading the charge, second-year superman Chris Peterson torpedoed his hometown course with a roaring 38:37. After Absalon snared the team's #3 spot, SAC regular Joe Maranzani spun a spectacular 39:28 in the #4 scoring position. A few minutes later, McQueen sealed the victory as #5 man. Busy dad Chris Moye used the race as a relaxing escape and crossed in 48:57 to ensure team success. Bravo, gents!!
Again, as with our men's 50+ scene, we had enough actors to put on a 40+ "B" act. With Keenan cast as leading man, second-year star Peter Monaco jitterbugged an amazing 41:55 to stun the crowd. Delaney, Shields and DiLeva then brought the house down with their riffs. When team times were tallied, our "B" crew had placed 5th within a field of 7 great teams. Huzzah!
