Shore AC Rides Polar Vortex to Victory at Penguin Pace 5K Race
When Dean Martin and Marilyn Maxwell recorded their hit song, "Oo, Baby, It's Cold Outside" in 1959, they might well have had our race conditions in mind. With temperatures in the single digits Fahrenheit and a light breeze, exposed noses turned numb. Well, one might argue in jest, that just means an Eskimo kiss will elicit a little tingle. Perhaps, but keep in mind that the couple in the song are looking for excuses to remain indoors where it's warm. Not us! We had a race to run -- out in the bitter cold!
Thankfully (?), a painfully persistent polar vortex had conditioned us to the chill. Throughout much of December and January, arctic air had barreled down from Canada, keeping our temperatures often 15 degrees or more below average. Regrettably, respiratory diseases flourished. In fact, illness claimed two of our Shore AC teammates the night before the race. Those of us still in good health questioned our sanity as we gathered for the start of the race.
But when the horn sounded to begin the 2026 Penguin Pace 5 kilometer race, all second-guessing evaporated as we focused on the job at hand: completing the race so that we could return to the warmth of the church gymnasium and the promised cup of hot cocoa. Second-year sensation Carlos Nunes led the way for Shore AC, both in terms of time and age grading. He crossed the finish line with a blazing time of 18:06. For his 60 years of age, that corresponds to a phenomenal age grading of 87.61%. Carlos achieved the top AG among all runners in the race, both men and women. Given that, for co-ed team competitions, team scoring is based on age grading, this was a spectacular way for the Shore AC squad to start! Next across the line in terms of age grading was another sophomore stunner, 61-year-old Pam Ricker. Her time of 22: 26 not only earned Pam a magnificent age grading of 82.29%, it also won her the women's 60-64 age group by a whopping margin of 3 minutes. Our third team scorer, Karen Dos Santos, qualifies as a club veteran, having been a member of Shore AC for at least 5 years. She was a huge contributor from Day 1, and Karen's contributions now as a 44-year-old masters athlete continue to astound. In this race, she fought a tooth-and-nail race to the finish against 26-year-old Lara Jacobs of New York. Karen reached deep for a massive final kick, edging Jacobs by 0.3 second for an 18:58 finish and second place overall female. In the process, Karen added a superb age grading of 79.83% to the Shore AC co-ed team total. Our fourth scorer was another sophomore standout. At age 68, Ed Kavanagh spun a superb 22:00, translating to an excellent 77.47% age grading. In the process, Ed garnered first place in the men's 65-69 age group. Rounding out the Shore AC co-ed team's scoring were the king and queen of our masters Long Distance Running program, Reno Stirrat and Susan Stirrat. Celebrating their 12th year with the club, these septuagenarians pounded out splendid times of 23:03 (76.49% AG) and 27:48 (75.14% AG), respectively. Moreover, each prevailed in their 70-74 age groups. Hooray!
We had terrific backup runners to ensure a Shore AC victory in this co-ed team competition. Nurse extraordinaire Rebecca Keenan tapped her adrenaline with an energetic 22:07, good for a 73.93% age grading and first place in the women's 50-54 age group. Fellow 50+ harrier John Delaney launched his 2026 campaign with a solid 21:45 (70.48% AG). Team captain Scott Linnell baby-stepped his way through a bout of sciatica to squeeze out a 25:02 (68.81% AG). A young 50+ Mike DiLeva got the new year off on the right foot with a terrific 21:51 (68.43%). Wayne resident Frank Novak enjoyed racing on his home turf, posting a speedy 18:53 (68.29% AG). Patty Kavanagh proved that she's in solid form by darting to a 27:18 (66.77% AG), good for third place in her 60-64 age group. Our eldest competitor at this race, 74-year-old Peter Auteri, bounced back from several months of medical treatment with a very encouraging 28:00 (65.73% AG). Bob Shields welcomed in the new year with a strong 24:02 (64.87% AG). Finally, Tammy Grossberndt rang the bell with a nice 30:49, good for 60.70% age grading. Well done, everyone!!!
