Shore AC Cleans Up at Our House 4 Miler

The first USATF-NJ standard Team Grand Prix race of the year can feel like opening day at the ballpark.  An entire season lies ahead, full of dazzling potential.  Get off on the right foot, and dreams of championships start to tantalize players and fans alike.

Championship notions certainly began to bubble in the minds of Shore AC runners after the Our House 4 Mile race on May 9.  The men achieved victories in the Open, 60+ and 70+ categories while placing second in 40+ and 50+.  Meanwhile, the Shore AC women fashioned a magnificent clean sweep, winning every category from Open through 70+.  What a great debut in the 2026 Grand Prix!

Let's commence our accounting of the Shore AC team successes with the ladies.

W70+:

Our septuagenarian gems delivered the goods in style.  Susan Stirrat dominated the 70-74 age group -- well, except for someone named Nora Cary; more on her below -- and led the Shore AC W70+ team to sweet victory.  Jo Ann Coffee ruled the 75-79 age group with a superb 39:36 to score second for the team.  When Marybeth Campau motored across the finish line at 43:30 to take second in the 75-79 age group, the team win was secured by a massive margin of 50 minutes.  Brava, ladies!

W60+:

Kiss goodbye to another women's age 70-74 American record!  At the Our House race, Shore AC ace Nora Cary clipped a 4-mile mark that had stood since 2017.  Correction: she destroyed it!  She blew away the previous record of 30:57 by well more than a minute, registering a phenomenal 29:18.  A trio of teammates backed up Nora's illustrious performance with marvelous accomplishments of their own.  Leslie Nowicki continued to impress with another strong showing, nailing an excellent 35:29 for third in her 60-64 age group.  Soon thereafter, Patti Kavanagh flew over the timing strip with a terrific 36:18 to complete team scoring.  Shore AC fans were still cheering loudly when, seconds later, Marie Capdevielle burst across the threshold in 36:27 to guarantee victory.

Shore AC was able to showcase its depth by entering a women's 60+ B team in the Our House race.  With Stirrat setting the pace, Chris Prorock-Rogers added a strong 37:21 as second team scorer.  After Coffee wrapped up team scoring, Luz Ravines contributed initial insurance at 42:01 while Campau tacked on further backup.  Talk about depth!  This amazing B team notched second place, beating two other "A" teams by more than 5 minutes.  Shore AC scored a 1-2 sweep in W60+!

W50+:

Faced with a potent challenge from the Amazing Feet running club, the Shore AC women's 50+ team left nothing to chance.  Sixty-two-year-old sensation Suzanne La Burt spearheaded the attack, scorching the course with a blazing 26:52.  That was less than a minute off of the W60-64 American record!  With Cary as #2 team scorer, 55-year-old Ali Marzulla stuck her landing with a superb 29:35 to polish off team scoring and the win.  Capdevielle underwrote the team with insurance.  Although Amazing Feet's A team lacked sufficient runners to qualify as a team, it's likely that Shore AC would have prevailed regardless.  Hooray, ladies!

W40+:

Often, the most competitive USATF-NJ team races take place in the 50+ and 60+ age groups.  But at Our House, the hottest action took place in the 40+ category.  Fortunately for Shore AC, a resurgent Karen dos Santos showed up.  Fully healed from an injury suffered a year ago, Karen has been on fire.  She crushed the difficult 4-mile course in a blistering 25:01, good for first place among all women -- at age 44!  La Burt and Marzulla filled the #2 and #3 scoring spots behind dos Santos while Kavanagh played backstop.  Their combined efforts yielded another Shore AC victory, this one by 6 minutes within a field of 5 teams.  Brava, ladies!

WOpen:

The Open Women team competition offered the potential for a huge showdown between Shore AC and Amazing Feet.  Alas, Amazing Feet came up one runner short of the minimum of 5 for a complete Open team.  But the Shoe AC ladies did their part.  With dos Santos leading the way, 36-year-old Erika Flores rocketed through the winding course close behind.  She blasted up the final hill to cross the finish line in 25:47 as second scorer overall and for the team.  Speeding along close behind came 35-year-old Katie Karshner.  With a mighty surge, Katie traversed the timing strip in 26:11 to place 4th among women and 3rd on the Shore AC Open team.  So far, so good.  But at this point we had run out of young runners.  We had to turn to 60+ gals Nowicki, Prorock-Rogers and Ravines to flesh out the #4, #5 and backup scoring positions.  Nevertheless, they came through with flying colors!  Our Open Women team won by a margin of 11 minutes.  What a performance!

Let's turn our attention now to the Shore AC teams and how they fared in the Our House 4 Mile showdown.

M70+:

Team victories of course take skill.  But sometimes sheer luck plays a role.  Pre-race analysis indicated that the men's 70+ team from Fleet Feet / Essex would cook our goose.  But they failed to declare their team.  With that juggernaut removed from the competition, our septuagenarians made quick work of the other four squads.  The legendary Reno Stirrat blazed our crew's path across the hilly course.  He registered a rapid 30:14 despite cutting back on his pace due to hip pain.  Our next racehorse was veteran Shore AC harrier Przemek Nowicki, who coaxed his 81-year-old frame across the varied surfaces of asphalt, grass, wood chips and gravel to score a superb 37:23.  Hot on Nowicki's heels came fellow 81-year-old Jack Frame.  Jack tripped the timing system only 11 seconds later at 37:34 to clinch the team win.  Shore AC partisans were still shouting hurrahs when insurance runner Carl Richko strode confidently across the finish line at 38:59 to win his 75-79 age group.  Well done, gents!

M60+:

Though solid competition in the men's 60+ team category confronted us at Our House, the Shore AC M60+ "A" team came loaded for bear. Super sophomore Alberto Perez fired the first salvo, laying down a spectacular 27:07.  Mike Salamone then celebrated his triumphant return to racing after many months of injury, spinning a whirlwind 27:52 as second team scorer.  When fellow sophomore Ed Kavanagh barreled through the timing tunnel in 29:32, the "A" team had secured its win by a comfortable 8-minute margin.  What's more, backups Stirrat and Harry Pino (32:04) ensured victory had any of the top 3 guys faltered.  Bravo, lads!

Shore AC had enough old fogies to enter an M60+ "B" team.  It was led by a slug-like Scott Linnell in 34:15 and filled out by Nowicki, Frame and Richko.  Remarkably, these collegial compadres managed to place 3rd within a field of 7 teams.  Holy Ben Gay!

M50+:

Our luck couldn't last forever.  When team results were announced during the post-race awards ceremony, Shore AC was reported to have won the men's 50+ team category.  It sounded too good to be true, considering that we were up against a mighty contingent from Amazing Feet.  It was indeed a fantasy.  After the timer corrected errors in the result, Amazing Feet was declared champion in M50+.  Nevertheless, Shore AC scored second!  Longtime club member Dan Campbell guided the crew, whistling through the winding course in a dashing 26:37.  After Perez and Salamone notched the #2 and #3 scoring positions, SAC 2023 Comeback Athlete of the Year Bob Shields sped to a splendid 29:31 finish.  Kavanagh completed scoring for the Shore AC M50+ team while Linnell provided a backstop.  Well done, lads!

M40+:

It was a similar story in the men's 40+ team category.  Though Shore AC had a potent crew, it was overshadowed by a stellar squad from Amazing Feet.  Here as well, we took second place.  A nearly-healed Joe Maranzani ignored whatever leg pain persisted from last year's injury and hammered out a rip-roaring 25:26.  After Campbell crossed as second team scorer, another sophomore stalwart -- Peter Monaco -- hurtled across hill and dale to clock in at 28:18.  Shields and Pino completed the team with no runners to spare.  Nor was there any time to spare!  Our M40+ crew nipped the gang from Fleet Feet / Essex by just 31 seconds.  Great going, guys!

MOpen:

If there was any doubt as to which team would win the Open Men category, it pretty much evaporated after the first three men had crossed the finish line.  Every one of them wore a Shore AC singlet!  SAC 2025 XC Athlete of the Year Brian Hill trailblazed the team's path, charging like a cheetah to an incredible time of 20:17.  Folks, that equates to an average of 5:04 per mile!  Hustling right behind Hill came Michael Bond, winner of the Shore AC 2025 LDR Athlete of the Year award.  Mike registered a ridiculous 20:23.  And the good times kept rolling.  Fellow U40 powerhouse Ryan Corbett bounded up the final hill to record a masterful 22:53 as third overall finisher.  What a great start for Shore AC.  But we were far from done!  Two minutes later, newcomer Ryan Rogers made his debut race in a Shore AC singlet memorable, sprinting to a spectacular 24:46 as the #4 team scorer.  When Maranzani crossed 40 seconds later, it was settled.  The Shore AC Open Men team had prevailed by a margin of 10 minutes.  Frank Novak added a terrific 26:35 as first insurance man while Monaco contributed a second backstop.  Hats off to our young lads!
SHORE AC INDIVIDUAL RESULTS:

Shore AC athletes felt right at home in the Our House 4 Mile race.  Our young studs made themselves especially comfortable.  Shore AC men took all three overall podium positions, while Shore AC women snared first and second places overall.  Shore AC was in residence!
