Shore AC Masters Create Fine Art at Haworth 5K Race
Picture this. The day dawns cool in the leafy suburban hamlet of Haworth. A wan sun smiles down as runners warm up for the USATF New Jesey Association's 5K championship race for masters men and women. It's a canvas that would invite any Dutch Golden Age artist like Rembrandt to fill in. Let's watch as the meester creates a masterpiece.
First to appear among teams were the male age 40+ speedsters. Shore AC's M40+ crew won by many lengths. Leading its charge was 40-year-old Billy Washer, whose scintillating 17:43 ranked him 9th overall and first in the 40-44 age group. Next into the picture strode 60-year-old Carlos Nunes. His stunning 17:52 not only defied his age, but it delivered him the top age grading (88.8%) among all race contestants. Our third team scorer, 40-year-old Nick Reid, was competing in his first race after a 3-month stint on the injured reserve list. He celebrated with a superb 17:57, good for second place in the 40-44 age group. A quintet of 50+ harriers completed the team. Ken Ginsburg marked his return to racing after a many-month absence with a rock-solid 20:08. John Delany got back on track after a rough patch with an encouraging 21:44 to complete team scoring. Bob Shields (22:02), Mike DiLeva (22:23) and Peter Tomaszewski (24:07) added tremendous insurance to guarantee the team's victory. The win puts our Shore AC men's 40+ team back on top in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix. Bravo, men! What a lovely start to the masterpiece!
Swift strokes sketched out a victory for our Shore AC men's 50+ team. A brace of sexagenarians paced this posse. With Nunes spearheading the onslaught, 62-year-old Alberto Perez uncorked a blazing 19:16 as second man. Ginsburg, Delaney and Shields fleshed out team scoring while DiLeva, Tomaszewski and 63-year-old Mark McCormack (24:08) formed a top-notch backstop trio. By winning, our Shore AC men's 50+ team reduced Amazing Feet's lead to 6 points in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix. Keep chopping, boys!!
Vibrant blue and red decorated the finish line scene for our Shore AC men's 60+ squads, as their singlets figured prominently in the team competition. Our "A" platoon took first place by a 10-minute margin. With Perez trailblazing, 70-year-old Mike Ayars scurried through the lovely 5-kilometer course in a spectacular time of 21:30 to notch the team's second scoring spot. Not long thereafter, the venerable Reno Stirrat coaxed his testy 72-year-old hamstring across the finish line in 23:06 to conclude team scoring. Fellow septuagenarian Scott Linnell chalked up a 23:57 as insurance. By prevailing at Haworth, our Shore AC men's 60+ team clinched first place in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix. Kudos, bro's!
We also had a Shore AC men's 60+ B team in this 6-team tilt. They snared a salient spot in the portrait of the race. With McCormack leading the way, 76-year-old Carl Richko nailed the team's #2 scoring position with a dashing 27:19. That gave Carl top billing among men ages 75-79. A mere half-minute later, 76-year-old Bill Bosmann lit up the timing system with his marvelous 27:49. Not only did Bill complete team scoring, but he also secured second place in the 75-79 age group. This trio placed fourth and came within 8 seconds of third-place Fleet Feet / Essex. Looking good, guys!
It is important to note here that 74-year-old Ken Wilson was rostered on our M60+ "B" team. He was on track to complete a superb race when disaster struck 100 yards from the finish. Ken collapsed to the pavement and fell unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, he appears to be okay. We look forward to his return to racing!
Considering how our septuagenarians played such a prominent role in our 60+ team's success, you can imagine how well our 70+ team fared. They vanquished their competition with a margin of 18 minutes! Ayars, Stirrat and Linnell filled the scoring slots while Richko and Bosmann offered all-important insurance. Hooray!
The next team competition for the masters men will be the USATF-NJ 8K Cross Country Championships on Sunday, October 25. Their season will conclude with the Ashenfelter 8K on Thanksgiving Day.
Let us now bring our fair ladies into the picture. Before describing the successes of our masters gals, direct your attention for a moment to the young lass in a Shore AC singlet at the corner of the canvas. That's 29-year-old Kerry Dyke. She's a blur because she's so fast! Kerry finished the race in a mind-bending 17:26. The only thing more shocking is that another woman beat her. Kerry placed second among women and fifth overall.
And now let's bring into focus the Shore AC masters ladies! We had but five. Nevertheless, they produced impressive results: a win in the 40+ age category plus second place in 50+ and in 60+. Marathoner Lindsay Bergman charted the course for the 40+ team, clocking a magnificent 22:01. Elementary school teacher Maureen Massell taught the roads a lesson, beating them into submission with a blistering 22:21. Fellow educator Kim Anicito wrapped up team scoring with a brilliant 24:07 while offering helpful pointers to a struggling 8-year-old boy along the way. (That same young lad then outkicked yours truly at the finish line...thanks a lot, Kim!! :-)) Team insurance was underwritten by 61-year-old Patti Kavanagh, who motored through the suburban paradise in a brisk 26:59. When team scores were totaled, our Shore AC W40+ coterie prevailed by a comfortable margin of over 3 minutes. Consequently, they have opened a 32-point gap over Clifton in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix. Beautifully composed, ladies!
The Shore AC women's 50+ team nearly pulled off a stunning upset. They came within 37 seconds off beating Clifton for first place. With Massell scorching the pavement in front, 61-year-old Chris Prorock-Rogers took advantage of the spectacular running conditions by spinning a lovely 26:52. Then, 71-year-old Susan Stirrat demonstrated good stability in her rehabilitated ankle by tripping the timer in a terrific 27:07. Brava, ladies, for taking second place within a field of six teams! Our W50+ team now enjoys a 17-point lead in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix.
Not to be outdone, the SAC W60+ squad also snared second place. Prorock-Rogers, Kavanagh and Stirrat all crossed the finish line within a tight 15-second time window. Way to pack the funnel, gals! Our W60+ team now holds a 17-point advantage over Clifton in the 2026 USATF-NJ Team Grand Prix. That's a lead worth framing!
Next up for the masters women's teams will be the Teri Roemer 10K race in Paramus on Sunday, October 18. That will be followed by the USATF-NJ 8K XC Meet on October 25 and finally Ashenfelter on Thanksgiving morning.
