A Tale of Two Outcomes for Shore AC at USATF Masters National 10K in Dedham
USATF Masters National races are kind of like great novels. Top-notch racers impress with their artistic form, and the drama of team competition captures attention like a riveting plot. It is thus fitting that the 10K race in Dedham, Massachusetts, bear the name "James Joyce Ramble". One even hears passages from his opus "Ulysses" being read aloud by appropriately clad volunteers along the route. (Thankfully, the race takes far, far less time to run than it does to read the book.)
To what literary masterpiece shall we compare Shore Athletic Club's team results at Dedham? Consider "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. You might recall its opening line: "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times." That sentiment describes our team results: 3 glorious wins, 3 agonizing losses. But be assured that every one of us SAC harriers gave it our best shot!
The "worst of times" began 24 hours before the race. M60+ team member Harry Pino's car broke down on the drive from New York to Boston, causing him to miss the race. Although we knew in advance that we lacked the required number (3) of runners to enter a complete M60+ team, Harry was looking forward to competing individually.
There were "best of times" before the race, too. Two-thirds of our delegation met up for a team dinner on Saturday night and feasted on good Italian food. (See the photograph at bottom.)

M80+ Team:
Staying with the "best of times" theme, our eldest statesmen delivered deliciously. And though they ran unopposed in this year's edition of the James Joyce Ramble, we like to believe that our men's 80+ team would have bested any other comers. Club veteran Przemek Nowicki led the charge, bouncing back from a rough winter with a spectacular clocking of 55:54. Hot on Przemek's heels came sophomore sensation Jack Frame, notching an excellent 57:18. Twenty-year club denizen Roland Cormier celebrated this return to his home state by willing his 86-year-old body across the hilly course in a superb 1:18:03. In doing so, he sliced a phenomenal 16 minutes off of his time from last year. It all added up to a sweet team victory. Well done, gentlemen!
M70+ Team:
Our septuagenarian heroes were coming off of a razor-thin win just 5 days prior, when they edged out arch-rival Boulder Road Runners at the USATF Masters National 1 Mile Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. With Boulder absent from Dedham, our M70+ crew felt confident that they could extend their winning streak to 4 races in the 2026 Masters National LDR Grand Prix. But a cabal of potent foes would make them pay for any complacency!
What a show our silver studs put on! Hurtling through space at close to a 7-minute-per-mile pace, 71-year-old Kevin Dollard threw down the teams first gauntlet with a scintillating 43:00. Drafting in Kevin's wake came an inspired Hal Leddy. Eager to atone for his disappointing mile race in Des Moines, Hal let loose with a tremendous 43:09. Shore AC fans barely had a chance to breathe before Jim Linn came thundering across the timing strip in 43:13 to close out an amazing team performance. Their team average of 43:08 outclassed second-place Greater Lowell by nearly 4 minutes. Our crew also featured renowned masters athlete and club trustee Reno Stirrat. Hampered by an uncooperative hip that had forced him to drop out of a race 2 weeks prior, Reno still gutted out an impressive 46:48 to provide team insurance. Kudos, lads, for your fourth victory in a row! These men hope to clinch first place in the 2026 National Grand Prix with a fifth conquest at the Steam boat 4 Mile Classic in Peoria on June 6. Go, guys, GO!
M50+ Team:
While our men's 50+ team experience might technically qualify as a "worst of times", we knew it would be tough going. Pre-race analysis indicated us finishing last among five teams. The prediction came true. But we did come very close to beating the #4 team, HFC Striders. Human rocket Shane Anthony did all that he could to give our M50+ platoon a whirlwind start. He roared through the rolling course in a jaw-dropping 35:30, good for second place in his 55-59 age group. The team was off to a great start! Unfortunately, fellow upper-50's greyhound Scott Siriano had a rough day. He managed to squeeze a 42:23 out of his exhausted body, well off of his usual performance. Team scoring came to a close when Bob Shields scampered across the finish line in 45:43. Remarkably, Bob ran 3 minutes faster than he did in a 10K race 2 weeks prior. Wow! The team had backup insurance from 69-year-old Scott Linnell, who crossed in 50:00 to cut 52 seconds from his Dedham time last year. Although we did not repeat as M50+ Dedham champions, we did collect 60 points in the 2026 Grand Prix. That moves us into 5th place with 3 races remaining. Go, team!!!

Our W50+ team is crowned champions! L-R: Alysia Puma and Christie Nie. Not pictured: Maureen Massell (already on the road home).
W60+ Team:
Oh, the agony! This was literally true for one of our women's 60+ team members, who suffered a painful injury a mere mile from the finish. Talk about "the worst of times"! For the team, it meant slipping off the podium to fourth place when we were battling arch-rival Liberty for first. But such is sports.
National sensation Suzanne La Burt gave the Shore AC W60+ crew a huge advantage with another monster performance, tripping the timer in 41:37. Not only did she finish first in her 60-64 age group, but Suzanne also placed second overall in age grading at 90.68%. Screaming through the Dedham streets not far behind came another 60+ sensation, second-year harrier Pam Ricker. With a 2-minute lead on Liberty's ace Mary Cass at Mile 5, Pam had just one mile to go. It was then that tissue in her lower leg separated from the stress. Unable to run, Pam limped the final mile just to ensure that she crossed the finish line (which she did at 1:01:43). Fortunately, the team had two other runners. Veteran club member Leslie Nowicki notched a solid 54:13 as second team scorer. Age 70 sensation Susan Stirrat crossed shortly thereafter in 55:57 to complete team scoring. Interestingly, our W60+ team came within a minute of reaching the podium. Well done, ladies! And although it was an emotional blow to lose to Liberty and slip to second place in the 2026 National Grand Prix, there are three more races on tap. That's plenty of opportunity to repeat as National Grand Prix champions!
W50+ Team:
Let's now swing to the other end of the emotional spectrum and revel in ecstasy. Pre-race analysis favored Shore AC within a field of four women's 50+ teams. That is exactly how the race panned out. The speedy Christie Nie spearheaded our attack. She fought through fatigue and stuck a fabulous 42:22 to lead all W50+ team scorers. English teacher Alysia Puma spun a dazzling 46:20 as #2 scorer. When fellow schoolteacher Maureen Massell flew over the finish line in 48:37 to wrap up team scoring, their dreams came true. The ladies were officially national champions! With the win, our W50+ team jumped from 13th place all the way to second place in the 2026 National Grand Prix. Can they win the Grand Prix? If we can manage to enter Shore AC W50+ teams into each of the remaining three races, it is quite possible!
W40+ Team:
A jaded observer would scoff at our last-place Shore AC women's 40+ team and argue that their loss clearly represents "the worst of times". And, yes, our ladies trailed the 5th-place team by a whopping 16 minutes. But all three of our gals felt like winners! Leader Karen dos Santos scorched the 10K course in 38:37 to place 6th overall and 4th in her 40-44 age group. Our team's second scorer, 62-year-old Chris Prorock-Rogers, celebrated wearing Shore AC colors once again in a national race (after a 30+ year hiatus) with a solid time of 58:52. The final team scorer, 75-year-old Marybeth Campau, thrilled at finishing second in her 5-year age group with a fine 1:06:41. What's more, the 55 Grand Prix points they earned vaulted our W40+ team from 13th to 3rd place in the 2026 National Grand Prix. By completing one more race, the team will reach the minimum of 3 races. That will qualify them for Grand Prix honors. Go, ladies, GO!!!
