Shore AC Takes Close Second Amid Whirling Cherry Blossom Petals
Rumor has it that Newark's Branch Brook Park, the venue for the Cherry Blossom 10K race, sports more cherry trees than any other park in our fair country -- even more than the famous Tidewater Basin in our nation's capital. With their blossoms having peaked during the past week, they were shedding lovely petals during our race. Race management added to the colorful display by launching streamers and confetti at the start. One way or the other, we runners could really get a "taste" of spring! :-)
Of course, Shore AC's main goal in this co-ed team race was to taste victory. We were attempting this feat even without our best age graders. (In co-ed races, teams scores are based on age grading rather than time.) And we came close! However, within a field of seven teams, Fleet Feet / Essex reigned supreme. Their average age grading of 78.58% bested Shore AC's average of 77.85%.
Shore AC's lovely ladies led our charge. Resurrecting "flower power" from a previous generation, 61-year-old Pam Ricker wafted a phenomenal time of 44:38 to achieve a magnificent age grading of 83.36%. Young (age 44) masters tornado Karen Dos Santos left petals swirling in her wake as she led all women until the final stretch. Finishing second overall in 38:34, Karen contributed a superb age grading of 79.69%. Our third female scorer, 57-year-old Ann Kim, showed that she is ready for the Boston Marathon 8 days hence. Her scorching time of 45:56 not only placed her second in the 55-59 age group (3 seconds behind first place), it contributed an excellent age grading of 77.05%.
Shore AC men were led by 69-year-old Mike Ayars. No doubt energized by his cafe's gourmet coffee, Mike blew through the finish chute in 45:15, thereby nailing an impressive 78.17% age grading. Octogenarian Jack Frame demonstrated that he's ready for the upcoming USATF Masters National 10K by crossing in 57:00, good for a strong 75.22% age grading. Wrapping up team scoring was 57-year-old John Delaney. By tripping the clock in 42:52, he generated a solid age grading of 73.63%.
A bevy of great performances from other Shore AC athletes ensured effective backup. Running in her first race for Shore AC, the legendary Jo Ann Coffee won her 75-79 age group with a convincing 1:00:58, translating to a terrific 77.04% age grading. Rebecca Keenan proved that she's primed for the Boston Marathon as well, pounding out a rip-roaring 44:39 and 73.83% AG. Susan Stirrat cooked up a great 57:07 and 73.68% AG, good for second place in her 70-74 age group. Natacha Smith, also a Boston Marathon registrant, performed percussion on her thigh (to relax a contracting calf muscle) as she sped toward a 44:48 finish and 73.59% AG. Joe Maranzani flashed his old speed as he zoomed to a 39:48 finish and 73.38% AG. Team captain Scott Linnell used the "earn your lunch" mantra to reach the finish line in 50:47 and earn a 69.66% AG. Leslie Nowicki cranked her 62-year-old legs to an excellent time of 54:17, good for a 69.45% AG. Chris Peterson shook off winter's rust with a credible 40:04 and 68.89% AG. Mary Beth Campau made her debut in a Shore AC singlet memorable, cruising to a 1:06:30 finish, good for second in the 75-79 age group, and a 68.s5% AG. Peter Auteri celebrated good medical news with a nice 55:21 and 67.80% AG. Frank Novak brought the goods -- including delicious coffee cake for the team, baked by his mother Susan -- by crossing in 40:16 for a 65.76% AG. Race director extraordinaire Lori Kilmurray motored to a fine 49:12 finish and 65.52% AG. Bob Shields negative split his was to a promising 48:56 and 65.09% AG. Lindsay Bergman warmed up for the Boston Marathon with a well-tuned 47:17 and 65.01% AG. Carl Richko notched second in his 75-79 age group with a sure-footed 1:00:24 and 64.11% AG. Chris Prorock-Rogers harkened back 30 years to when she previously ran for Shore AC, sentimentally crossing the finish line in Shore AC colors at 58:17, good for a 63.04% AG. Tammy Grossberndt dashed down the finish chute in 1:03:26 to contribute a 59.43% AG. Last but certainly not least, a valiant Luz Ravines, wrapped in a back brace, proved that nothing can keep her down. She sailed across the finish line in 1:07:13, yielding an AG of 57.58%. It should also be noted here that septuagenarian sensation Reno Stirrat started the race but wisely dropped out due to nagging hip pain. Congratulations to all Shore AC members who gave it their all!
