Kaboom! Shore AC Goes Supernova at the Big Bang Mile
True, it happens every year. You could liken the phenomenon to a Cepheid Variable star. Shore Athletic Club hosts the annual Big Bang Mile and, like clockwork, wins nearly every age group team competition. After all, our venue at Bell Works in Holmdel lies within our home base of Monmouth County, making it a short drive for many Shore AC members.
Our fair club shone brightly again at this year's Big Bang Mile. You could even say that we went supernova, considering that we won every age group team competition this time. Astute observers will note, however, that very few teams from other clubs were entered. In fact, there were no women's teams from any other club. No doubt this was due in part to the rescheduling of the race from its original July 18 date due to poor air quality. Unfortunately, many runners had conflicts with the new date of August 1 and chose not to attend the Big Bang Mile. Luckily for Shore AC, our large membership gives us the opportunity to enter teams even when many members can't attend.
Despite the lack of team competition, great performances abounded! The meet record for men fell, the meet record for women nearly fell, and an American age group record was smashed. Besides those headlines, many other athletes accomplished tremendous feats. That includes so many of our own Shore AC teammates. Read on and enjoy the cosmic show!
Shore AC Women's Teams
W70+
Let us begin with the great Shore AC gals. We'll start with the seasoned veterans. Consider our sensational 70's ladies. Led by the world-renowned Nora Cary, they lit up the landscape with their heavenly team triumph. Cary notched a magnificent 6:38, just 14 seconds shy of the American 70-74 record. Newcomer Jo Ann Coffee gleamed like the sun's corona, churning out a fine 8:50 as second scorer. Team scoring coalesced when nationally recognized Susan Stirrat crossed the finish line on a not-fully-healed ankle in 8:53. We then welcomed back 79-year-old Barbara Donelik to USATF competition as she provided insurance with a solid 9:13. Hurrah, ladies!
W60+
Blessed with a bevy of age 60+ gals, we were able to enter three 60+ teams! Highlighting our "A" squad was the Monster from Greenwood Lake, the incomparable Suzanne La Burt. Her mad dash to the finish line earned her a superb time of 6:02 with an accompanying PLP of 90.25%, ranking her third among all women. After Cary grabbed the second scoring position, 66-year-old Donna Grocki locked in the team's win with a rip-roaring 6:55. Equestrian Diane Rothman kicked up her heels with a galloping 7:06 to ensure the team's victory.
The Shore AC women's 60+ B team featured another lady with a bum ankle, that being 67-year-old Marie Capdevielle. At the risk of regretting it the next morning, she let it fly and finished in a remarkable 7:28. Famous freshman Chris Prorock-Rogers checked in next for this crew, doing justice to her new singlet by notching a worthy 7:45. Globetrotting trekker Leslie Nowicki wrapped up team scoring with her solid 7:51. Stirrat supported the team as insurance agent. Kudos to this quartet for securing second place!
A 1-2-3 clean sweep in the W60+ team category was cemented by Shore AC's "C" team. With Coffee spearheading the charge as first finisher, Luz Ravines continued her valiant struggle to bounce back from substantial back issues by crossing in 9:02 as second woman. When Donelik strode across the timing strip seconds later, this squad had secured third place among teams. Brava to all of you great ladies!
W50+
Shore AC ladies were primed for a showdown with other clubs in the 50+ team category. Alas, no other club could muster the minimum of 3 ladies to enter a team. Our women had to find other sources of motivation to run hard. Simple pride seemed to serve well! Witness the Shore AC W50+ "A" team. With La Burt trailblazing, nurse extraordinaire Becky Keenan hung with the great Nora Cary and recorded a magnificent 6:38. Teacher Maureen Massell made it seem elemental as she swept through the finish line arch with a smart 6:41. Grocki and Rothman provided backstops as this quintet earned top honors in 50+ team competition.
Meanwhile, the Shore AC women's 50+ "B" batch distinguished themselves with their own shining performances. Longtime club denizen Liz Spector struck first, sticking a fiery 7:19. Capdevielle and Prorock-Rogers locked down team scoring while Nowicki and Ravines delivered ever-important insurance. Well done, ladies!
W40+
Shore AC was fortunate enough to have enough ladies to enter two teams in the 40+ category. As with all other women's age groups, the Shore AC squads ran unopposed. White-hot Karen dos Santos clocked her fastest time ever in the Big Bang Mile -- and she has done them all! -- with a stupendous 5:19. Running her inaugural team race as a Shore AC member, 40-year-old Jessica Matthews made it memorable with a runaway 5:33 victory in the W40-49 heat. Keenan and Massell completed this outstanding troupe.
Aiming to put on a galactic show of their own, members of the Shore AC women's "B" team glowed gloriously as well. Ariana Susan led the trio, charging through the finish chute to register 6:59 and secure a sub-7-minute gem. Science Avenue presenter Kim Anicito stepped away from her popular "Kim's Critters" display just long enough to rip a commendable 7:12. Spector completed team scoring, handing this triplet the team silver medal. Huzza!
WOpen
The only women's category that featured a team from a different club than Shore AC, even if incomplete, was the Open category. Raritan Valley mustered four gals for their Open team, just one shy of the minimum requirement of 5. They would have been hard pressed to beat Shore AC's Open Women's team. Our crew included heat winner Kerry Dyke, who came tantalizingly close to breaking the meet record with her 5:03. After dos Santos and Matthews punched the clock for positions #2 and #3, freshman fireball Tracey Eckert scorched the perimeter roads at Bell Works with a mighty 5:55. Fellow first-year fresh face Becca Snyder celebrated her first team race for Shore AC with a fine 6:51 to wrap up team scoring. With Susan and Anicito contributing insurance, newcomer Haley Rogers chipped in additional backup with her sure-footed 8:51. Way to go, ladies!!!

Shore AC Men's Teams
Unlike the women's field, our Shore AC men's teams faced competition in every age category except 80+. Competition is always good for the sport! Nonetheless, all of the Shore AC men's "A" teams prevailed.
M80+
Despite having no team competition, our octogenarians ran hard. One of the nation's top 80+male runners, Jack Frame, led the way with his speedy 7:57. Last year's USATF Masters National Grand Prix Age 80-84 Champion, Przemek Nowicki, crossed second for the team in 8:28. Team scoring came to a flourishing close when Robert O'Rourke celebrated his return from injury with an encouraging 9:32. Normal race walker Jack Lach switched to running and beat the 10-minute barrier with a 9:59 as first backup man. Inspirational Coach John Kuhi, at age 82, defied doctor expectations and muscled out a 13:37 as second backup man despite myriad medical challenges. Bravo, gentlemen!
M70+
The septuagenarian men's skirmish at the Big Bang Mile involved both Shore AC and Fleet Feet / Essex. Shore AC sported two teams. They were split according to decade of longevity: all five men aged 70-79 ran on the "A" team while all five gents of ages 80-89 gelled into the "B" team.
Unofficial Mayor of the Running World, Reno Stirrat, carried the "A" team's banner as he pounded out a marvelous 6:39. Scott Linnell delighted in racing for the first time as a 70-year-old and managed to trip the timing system at 6:54. Peter Auteri put a bow around team scoring when he crossed under the finish-line arch in 7:36. Carl Richko and Jim Wright added all-important insurance by recording 8:07 and 8:52, respectively. This quintet's average time of 7:03 easily beat the 7:28 average for second-place Essex. Well done, lads!
Meanwhile, the Shore AC M70+ "B" team cruised to third place on the podium, powered by the afore-mentioned five-pack of elder statesmen on the 80+ team. Kudos go to Frame, Nowicki, O'Rourke, Lach and Kuhi for showing up and getting the job done!!
M60+
Livelier competition lit up the men's 60+ team arena. Here, there were not just one or two but three clubs represented! North Jersey Masters joined the fray to duke it out with Shore AC and Fleet Feet / Essex. But Shore AC's M60+ "A" wrecking crew proved too much for any other team to handle. Mike Heal spearheaded their assault, vying with the heat leaders to notch a superb 6:18. After Stirrat secured the team's #2 spot, coach Gary Wiesinger nabbed the third and final scoring slot when her sailed across the timing mat in 6:53. Linnell tacked on insurance when he followed a second later. Good job, boys!
Our Shore AC M60+ "B" squad held a bit of heat to the feet of second-place Fleet Feet / Essex, as their average of 7:45 came within 17 seconds of Essex. Longtime Shore AC member Rich O'Brien paved the way, bubbling up a hopping 7:31. After Auteri filled the second scoring position, Richko locked down team scoring as third man. Race benefactor Brian Hanse contributed valuable insurance when he crossed the timing mat in 8:34. Wright supplemented team insurance less than 20 seconds later. This swashbuckling crew soundly defeated fourth-place NJ Masters, outdistancing them by more than 1 minute in the team average. Outstanding work, guys!
M50+
Competition grew more fierce towards the younger age groups as Amazing Feet entered the picture. Shore AC assembled two teams for the 50+ fight. Its "A" team featured a bevy of high-powered harriers. Carrying the chevron was Mike O'Connor, proud father of Villanova University phenom Tilly O'Connor. Mike's blistering 5:27 earned him first place among men ages 55-59 and a sixth-place age grading of 83.91%. Next to cross the timing threshold was veteran SAC harrier Ken Kropac. His scorching 5:36 placed Ken on the podium in the 50-54 age group. Just 6 seconds later, CBA alumnus Dan Campbell proved that he's still got it, slamming down a superb 5:42 as the team's third scorer. Shore AC fans were still cheering deliriously when our #4 hero, Denis Keenan, soared across the finish line in 5:50. And wouldn't you know, just 7 seconds later came Big Bang Mile Refreshments Coordinator Tim Horn! His outstanding time of 5:57 put all five scorers under 6 minutes. Shore AC stalwarts Mike DiLeva and Brian Hill made sure that their teammates efforts would stick by contributing rock-solid backup in 6:17 and 6:36, respectively. DYN-A-MITE!!!
Though Amazing Feet's M50+ squadron performed well enough to earn the team silver medal, the Shore AC M50+ "B" team made them sweat. With Heal leading our charge, SAC Comeback Kid Bob Shields landed a punishing left hook with his 6:19. With Wiesinger, O'Brien and Hanse rounding out our pack, it was good enough to land the "B: team on the podium ahead of North Jersey Masters. Rock on, lads!
M40+
The tussle for the men's 40+ team crown boiled down to a re-match between the men's 50+ "A" teams from Shore AC and Amazing Feet. As with the M50+ contest, Shore AC ruled the M40+ dust-up. With O'Connor, Kropac, Campbell, Keenan and Horn filling in the scoring slots, 46-year-old Chris Moye coasted to a 5:59 finish to provide essential backup. Kudos, crew! Meanwhile, DiLeva, Shields and Hill strove to uphold Shore AC club honor on what proved to be an incomplete M50+ "B" team.

Now, we come to the most loaded heat of all: the Open Men Mile. Josh Izewski of Doylestown, PA, led from start to finish and broke the 4-year-old meet record with an insanely fast 4:13.10. (His chip time was an even faster 4:12.74.) As for team competition, although it consisted of only two complete teams, it was a donnybrook. Raritan Valley Road Runners brought a legitimately good squad whose first two runners broke 5 minutes and whose final 3 scorers all broke 6 minutes. Still, they couldn't match Shore AC's speed and depth. All 5 of our scorers broke 5 minutes. Ace Troy Hill torched the out-and-back course, riding in the wake of Izewski to a stupendous 4:14. Michael Bond burned rubber close behind, crossing in 4:22 as third overall in the meet. Next into the corral galloped Kyle Spector with a phenomenal time of 4:28, good for fourth overall. The crowd was still screaming with joy when Troy's older brother Brian Hill stormed across the timing strip seconds later in 4:34 -- well off of his normal pace but still Herculean. Ryan Corbett completed team scoring when he sprinted through the finish-line archway with a terrific 4:59. Joshua Beer added fantastic backup with his speedy 5:22. Hip-hip-HOORAY to these ultra-talented Shore AC harriers!!!
We also had three guys on an incomplete Shore AC Open Men "B" team. Kyle's older brother William Spector blazed the path with a turbocharged 5:14. Dan Burkert pounded the surf in William's wake to register an excellent 5:25. Moye was third man. Good work, lads!
