Shore AC Lights Up Overcast Wayne Rotary 5K; Co-Ed Win Streak at 3
Shore Athletic Club's prospects for winning the Wayne Rotary 5K USATF-NJ Co-Ed Team Championship race seemed as dim as the morning skies. Most of our high age graders were unavailable for this race, due to other races or events. Would SAC's perfect 2-for-2 win streak in the 2025 Co-Ed series gurgle down the drain this day like the overnight rain?
Luckily for us, we could still muster solid age grading power. After all, our club features many seaworthy boats. Long-time club member Diane Rothman set the tempo, speedboating through the flat course in 23:27 to set an age grading highwater mark of 84.17% for the team. Freshman sensation Alberto Perez crushed his 60-64 age group competition with a tsunami-like 19:24, good for an 82.47% PLP. Another club veteran, 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki, dropped by Wayne just long enough to cruise its streets in 26:42 (77.53% age grading) before setting sail for the USATF Masters National 10K race in Massachusetts on the following day. Shore AC men's team scoring wrapped up when Peter Auteri rowed hard across the finish line in 23:34 to win his 70-74 age group. Peter contributed a fine age grading of 76.90%. Back on the women's side, 65-year-old triathlete Marie Capdevielle surfed the wave in 25:41 to earn an excellent age grading of 75.82%. The ever-improving Leslie Nowicki came ashore in 26:51 to wrap up team scoring with her 68.78% PLP. When team scores were tallied and compared, we learned that Shore AC had won by a nose! Our team average of 77.61% just edged out the 77.44% score for Fleet Feet / Essex.
Offering all-important backup were new members Clive Cooper (17:44; 76.25%; 1st M40-44), Joe Singleton (19:17; 69.58%; 2nd M35-39) and Katie Karshner (20:57; 67.43%; 1st F30-34). This race was their first for Shore Athletic Club. Welcome aboard Clive, Joe and Katie! Also crewing the Good Ship Shore AC were Frank Novak (17:47; 72.30%; 1st M30-34), Scott Linnell (23:28; 72.14%; 1st M65-69) and Tammy Grossberndt (29:15; 61.88%). Hooray, team!
With the win -- our third in three attempts -- Shore Athletic Club takes a commanding lead in the 2025 Co-Ed Grand Prix. We have 36 points. Second-place Fleet Feet / Essex sports 28 points, while third-place Clifton lurks close behind with 26 points. Two Co-Ed team races remain. They are the Sunset 5 Miler on June 26 and the Three Bridges 5 Miler on August 9. A team's Co-Ed Grand Prix score is based on its best 4 of the 5 races. A third-place or better finish in either remaining race will clinch first place for us in the Grand Prix.
