Shore AC Begins 2026 National Masters Grand Prix with Wins in Portland
Some things just go together. Independence Day and fireworks. Thanksgiving and turkey. And, it seems, West Coast USATF National Cross Country races and muddy, rain-soaked courses. This year's edition in Portland, Oregon, certainly reinforced the perceived pairing. Several days of drizzle, coupled with a busy series of races on the same course the day before the USATF Masters XC race, had created a sloppy venue for age 40+ runners. Could our Shore AC harriers handle the morass?
One matchup that brings us great satisfaction is Shore AC teams and winning. We were fortunate to taste victory with both of our age group teams at Portland. In the masters men's 8K race at 9:00 am, our 70+ gents stormed the podium with a near-perfect team score of 7. (The best possible score is 6 for the 3-team format that applies to men ages 60 and over.) In the masters women's 6K race that followed at 10:00 am, our Shore AC 60+ ladies edged out the favored team from Club Northwest to grab first place in a squeaker. Grab a (dry) seat and read all about how our achievements unfolded!
70+ men's team
Not satisfied with their third-place finish in the 2025 USATF Masters National Team LDR Grand Prix, our age 70+ guys wanted to get started on the right foot early in the 2026 Grand Prix. Flush with new blood -- namely Hal Leddy and Kevin Dollard -- the Shore AC 70+ crew had already put their competition on notice with a rousing victory at the National 5K in Atlanta in the second-to-last race of the 2025 GP. Could they repeat their success on a swampy golf course in Portland? Dollard and Leddy fast-tracked our chances with an absolutely superb 1-2 finish. They finished just 3 seconds apart in 37:25 and 37:28, respectively. Nearest competitor Jack Pottle of defending champion Boulder Road Runners lagged by almost 30 seconds. Energized fans erupted half a minute later when Jim Linn crossed in 38:30 to seal the Shore AC victory. Their scoring line of 1-2-4 added up to a superb 7 points. Second-place Boulder ended with a score of 21 points, well behind our boys in throwback navy blue singlets. Moreover, fourth man Reno Stirrat guaranteed the win when he finished in 8th place at 40:41. (Reno anticipates that the hip pointer which limited his pace will be resolved by January 11 when he toes the line in Tallahassee at Club XC Nationals.) Brilliantly done, lads!!!
60+ women's team
Yes, winning the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Team Grand Prix felt fabulous to our Shore AC age 60+ ladies. So delightful, in fact, that they intend to do it again this coming year! Given that they also won in 2024, a victory in 2026 would constitute a "three-peat".
Our 60+ gals pulled off a stunner in Portland, considering that rival Club Northwest was projected to prevail. Our SAC sisters struck gold in this first race of the 2026 Grand Prix. Leading the charge was 2024 National Grand Prix champion Suzanne La Burt. She ground through the muck with ferocity and rocketed down the home stretch to clock in at 27:49. Suzanne beat all other ladies age 60 and over. Her nearest competitor, Margi Bell of Prado Racing, finished almost 40 seconds behind. About 45 seconds later, the age 60-64 podium was completed when Shore AC's Pam Ricker torched the final straightaway to notch 29:14. Because Prado did not have a complete women's 60+ team, Pam picked up the #2 scoring position for the 60+ team competition. Just like that, the Shore AC W60+ squad had launched a strong 1-2 start! However, it did not guarantee victory. If Club Northwest could pack in their top three ladies next, as predicted, they could earn gold. The next couple of minutes gave Club Northwest partisans hope. Michelle Neal secured the #3 spot with her 31: 02, and soon thereafter teammate Gail Hall grabbed the #4 position at 31:37. If Club Northwest's third lady could cross the finish line next, they would likely win. Yet fate cast a different plan. The next three scoring 60+ ladies to sail over the timing mats all hailed from The Janes Elite Racing club. Club Northwest's third finisher was thus displaced to the #8 slot. That set their team's score at 15. As long as Shore AC's third runner finished better than 12th place, Shore AC would earn the victory. Indeed, Leslie Nowicki came home next in the #9 position at 35:39 to nail down the win! For good measure, Susan Stirrat crossed seconds later in the #10 spot to guarantee team success. Muddy, wet feet never felt so good!!!
Individual Shore AC men
Undeterred by the fact that they were on incomplete teams, three Shore AC gentlemen strove their hardest for individual honors. In the 55-59 age group, 59-year-old Scott Siriano battled a slew of younger chaps. Though the younger fellows mostly proved faster than him on this day, Scott did taste some satisfaction by beating out a few age-group rivals with his time of 35:43. In the 80-84 age group, Przemek Nowicki (50:15) fought his way onto the podium by outdistancing foe Thomes Lemire of Boulder Road Runners. Finally, 85-year-old Roland Cormier parlayed his last-place finish at 1:10:49 into an uncontested victory in the 85-89 age group. Well done, chaps!!!
