October 26, 2025, Peapack, NJ: Shore AC masters ladies come to the rescue again! The club's Open Women team was once again completely staffed by ladies of age 40 and over. They got the job done. winning unopposed. Left to right: Luana Pesco Koplowitz, Maureen Massell, Diane Rothman and Pam Ricker. Not pictured: Lindsay Bergman.
Shore AC Treats Natirar Park as its Home Course, Dominates USATF-NJ 8K XC Meet
Considering the quantity and quality of runners that we assembled, it certainly seemed as if the Shore Athletic Club owned Natirar Park at the USATF New Jersey Association's 8-kilometer cross country meet. More than one-third of the participants -- 19 out of 54 -- wore the white singlet with blue lettering and our classic red line. Furthermore, 4 out of the top 5 men and, likewise, 4 out of the top 5 women, affiliated with Shore AC. Our "home course" cooking sure tasted good!
Let's dive into this six-course -- er, six SAC team -- feast and admire our haute cuisine.
Open Women
As has so often been the case, our marvelous masters ladies created a Shore AC Open Women team all by themselves. And we were fortunate to enlist the requisite five women on this last weekend in October, when myriad competing obligations kept so many others away. My, oh my, the five who came made it a day! All five finished among the top nine women. The youngest in our delegation, 44-year-old Lindsay Bergman, stuck another feather in her overflowing cap with a smoking second-place finish in 37:08. Surging 61-year-old rookie Pam Ricker stormed across the timing strip 7 seconds later in third place overall with an outstanding time of 37:15. The next female to emerge from the back bowl and race down the final hill towards the finish was speedy 57-year-old Maureen Massell. She whirred past the clock in 39:59 to snatch fourth place overall. Less than 2 minutes later, long-time SAC member Diane Rothman churned her 67-year-old legs like someone half her age, passing over the timing mat in 41:41 to garner fifth place overall. Our open team scoring reached a conclusion when 70-year-old Mountain Ultra Trail champion Luana Pesco Koplowitz successfully navigated the looping 8K course in 49:30 to place ninth overall. Our star-studded quintet won unopposed! With the victory, our Shore AC Open Women team now enjoys an insurmountable 25-point lead in the 2025 Team Grand Prix. Way to go, ladies!!!
40+ Women
Because USATF-NJ rules permit masters (age 40+) athletes to run on two age group teams, we had all 5 ladies compete for our 40+ team as well. They ran unopposed in this category as well. With the win, our 40+ Women team launches to an untouchable 26-point lead in the 2025 Team Grand Prix. Brava, gals!!!
Regrettably, we did not have enough women to enter 50+, 60+ or 70+ teams. But because other clubs suffered the same lack, we didn't lose any ground in the 2025 Grand Prix. Whew!

70+ Men
Meanwhile, on the men's side, our rollicking club rousted enough sleepy lads out of bed on a Sunday morning to populate four age group teams. This included three septuagenarians, enough to enter a men's 70+ team. Long-time SAC stalwart Jim Wright led the charge. He willed his barking leg muscles, which had run a very challenging 5K cross country race only the day before, over the rolling Natirar landscape to finish in 48:50. Yeoman Carl Richko proved that 75 years of age does not necessarily render a body decrepit, as he motored over hill and dale to a solid time of 50:25. Sealing the deal for the men's 70+ force was ace salesman Dan Murphy. He cruised his custom-built roadster body over the crushed stone trails to take the checkered flag in 52:29. Being unopposed, our graybeards prevailed in the M70+ team competition. In fact, they continued a winning streak that extends over two years, dating back to May of 2023. Hooray, gents!
60+ Men
Our Shore AC men's 60+ squadron has a similar tradition of perennial supremacy. We continued the trend at this race, vanquishing two other teams. Rookie firecracker Alberto Perez blasted out our path forward. He roared through the bucolic park in a blazing 35:06 to earn the #1 scoring position in the 60+ team competition. Fellow freshman fusillade Mauro Castro streaked like a missile to a dynamite time of 37:17 and a #2 score. What a great beginning! However, the #3 and #4 scoring slots were seized by rival Fleet Feet / Essex. Could Shore AC's third man nail down a team victory, or would Essex snatch the prize from Shore AC's grasp? SAC partisans exhaled a sigh of relief when Scott Linnell muddled through the finish chute with an odious 42:01. Somehow, it was good enough for the #5 scoring position, giving Shore AC's M60+ team a score of 8. That was well under the 15 points incurred by Essex. The afore-mentioned Murphy provided much-appreciated backup insurance. Good going, guys!
50+ Men
Historically, our Shore AC men's 50+ team has played second fiddle to Garden State Track Club and Garmin Runners. In the past couple of years, with GSTC and Garmin mostly absent from USATF-NJ races, Clifton Road Running Club has filled their void, giving us fits with their many new and talented recruits. But not today. Our boys ran unopposed. But even if there had been competition, our Shore AC men's 50+ team would have proved tough to beat. Our barista and chili chef for Lehigh Club XC races, Ken Ginsburg, cooked up a beauty, leading all runners over age 50 with a white-hot 33:06. Fellow quinquagenarian Joe Demetrick rode Ken's wake, flying down the final stretch and score in 33:30. Perez, Castro and Linnell polished off team scoring while Wright and Richko contributed all-important insurance. With the win, our men's 50+ squad clinched first place in the 2025 Grand Prix, having grown their margin to an unbeatable 33 points. Boffo, boys!
Open Men
Hats off to our U40 lads! We had six show up for this race. What a thrill for spectators to watch real high-quality harriers thunder through the cross-country course! Michael Bond led the attack, scorching the course in a stunning time of 25:47. Troy Hill came next, pounding the earth into submission with a withering 26:31. Michael and Troy finished first and second overall in the race, more than two minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Ryan Corbett was one of two athletes who came barreling through the finish chute next, with Ryan notching 29:07 for fourth place overall. A mere half-minute later, HS coach John Larkin posted a scintillating 29:41. In doing so, John grabbed fifth place overall, the #4 cross-country scoring position, and achieved a sub-6-minute per mile pace. Team scoring came to a close when newcomer Daniel Burkert, competing in his first race for Shore AC, flew across the timing strip in 31:42. Another fresh face, Jordan Ricker -- Pam's son -- contributed rock-solid backup when he crossed the finish line side-by-side with his mom at 37:15. With the victory, the Shore AC Open Men team vaults to a score of 72 points in the 2025 Grand Prix. Although Fleet Feet / Essex earned 12 points with their second-place finish to reach 51 points in the Grand Prix, they cannot catch us with only one race remaining for Open Men. Our Shore AC Open Men have clinched first place in the 2025 Grand Prix. Well done, lads!!!
