August 24, 2025, Peapack-Gladstone, NJ: Runners await the start of the USATF-NJ 5K XC race in beautiful Natirar Park. Video by Dave Cary? The image above is a snapshot taken of the video.
Shore AC Performs Clean Sweep at USATF-NJ 5K XC Meet
It was a moment to savor. When team results were announced at the end of the awards ceremony, we learned that Shore AC had run the table. Not only did our "A" squads win every age group that we contested (we had no team in women's 70+), but each of our "B" and "C" teams placed as high as possible, losing only to other Shore AC teams while beating teams from other clubs.
Granted, we held an advantage by bringing an overwhelming number of runners. A remarkable 41 out of 114 finishers wore Shore AC singlets. The race director even joked that he should have called the event "The Shore AC Invitational" rather than a USATF New Jersey Association meet.
We prevailed not only with quantity but with quality. On the men's side, 8 of the top 10 finishers competed for Shore AC. On the women's side, we had 5 of the top 10. Our dominance manifested itself in age group team competition as well, as several of our "A" teams won with perfect 1-2-3 or 1-2-3-4-5 scores.
Let us recount first how the Shore AC women achieved success. We will proceed from eldest to youngest age group teams, starting with 60+. Pre-race analysis of the 60+ competition was critical to our female team fortunes across all age groups. It indicated that we possessed ample depth to easily prevail against the two other 60+ teams. So, we assigned two of our top 60+ ladies to younger teams. Doing so was key to our Open Women team victory, as you will read below. But back to the 60+ team: first-year phenom Pam Ricker led the way with a tremendous 23:28. Her age grading of 78.67% ranked second among all women in the race. Susan Stirrat cranked out a stupendous race, finishing in 27:49 to place second not only on the team but among all 60+ team scorers. Not bad for someone who would turn 70 three weeks later! Veteran club member Leslie Nowicki closed out team scoring with a superb 28:54. The ladies won with a 1-2-4 showing for a total of 7 points -- just one point away from perfection. All-important insurance was provided by Patty Kavanagh (29:06) and Tammy Grossberndt (33:07). In fact, given how well Patty and Tammy ran, the team would have won even without Pam and Susan. Now that's depth!
Our Shore AC 50+ women's team composition looked nearly identical to our 60+ team. And they fared even better! Rebecca Keenan spearheaded their charge, nailing a magnificent time of 23:28 to earn the #1 score among runners on 50+ teams. With Stirrat and Nowicki placing #2 and #3, the team garnered a perfect score of 1-2-3. And with Kavanagh and Grossberndt notching the #4 and #6 scoring positions, they guaranteed victory even if Keenan and Stirrat had faltered. Brava, ladies!
The perfection trend extended to our women's 40+ team as well. World-renowned harrier Nora Cary stunned the crowd with her blazing-fast 22:44, good for a mind-bending age grading of 91.88% for the 70-year-old. Long-time club member Diane Rothman ripped a scorching 25:30 as second team scorer, giving the 67-year-old the third -best age grading among women of 78.48%. Rookie star Lori Kilmurray grabbed the #3 score with a scintillating 26:11. Voila! Another 1-2-3 team victory! Educator Kim Anicito taught the rest of the field a thing or two about racing with her solid 28:30 as backup runner. Kudos to the leaders of the 40+ class!
The only suspense among the women's team competitions lay in the Open category. Would Raritan Valley beat us? They struck first when 31-year-old Taylor Rehe crossed in 21:53. Cary countered at 22:44 to grab the #2 scoring position. But RVRR's Cassandra Raia took the #3 scoring slot when she crossed in 23:12, putting Shore AC in an early hole. But not for long! Shore AC then went on a tear. They secured the next four scoring positions when Keenan, Ricker, Rothman and Kilmurray all crossed. The team posted a score of 2-4-5-6-7, adding up to a total score of 24. Anicito assured victory with her #10 position as backstop, displacing a plethora of runners from other teams. Our victory was accomplished with a team composed entirely of masters women. Superb job, ladies!

As for the men, our multitude of Shore AC male harriers gave us the luxury of assigning guys to their usual age group teams. In fact, the riches in headcount allowed us to enter multiple teams in the 40+, 50+ and 60+ categories. As mentioned above, SAC teams completely dominated.
Our 70+ team set the tone by continuing its 2-year win streak in USATF-NJ LDR Grand Prix races. National sensation Jim Linn got the ball rolling with a torrid 22:27. Jim's 80.71% age grading ranked third among all men in the race. Ten-year Shore AC veteran and national legend Reno Stirrat dashed across the finish line in 24:05 to scoop up the #2 scoring position, 18 seconds ahead of 70+ XC Series foe Charlie Slaughter. Long-time SAC warrior Spider Rossiter closed the door on the competition when he crossed in 26:41 to earn 4 points. Another SAC veteran, 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki, provided solid insurance with his #6 finish at 30:40. Another race, another Shore AC M70+ team win!
Our abundance of SAC men permitted us to enter three 60+ teams. Team "A" featured our speediest age 60-69 fellows. Human rocket Rick Lee, holder of two American age group records, paved the way with his insanely fast 18:55 on the hilly course. Rick's 86.84% age grading led all men in the race. Terrific freshman Alberto Perez zoomed over the timing strip next at 21:44 to secure the #2 scoring position. Don Schwartz celebrated his return from the injured reserve list by spinning a rapid 22:16. By going 1-2-3, our lads achieved perfection. Speed demon Eldon Reynoso added excellent insurance with his blazing time of 22:49.
The Shore AC men's 60+ "B" team consisted of the same four graybeards that comprised our 70+ team. This team captain projected that they would beat the "C" team that was composed of the remaining 60-69 guys not on the "A" team, hence the "B" designation. But a day-of-race addition to the "C" team flipped the outcome. As a consequence, the Linn-Stirrat-Rossiter-Nowicki "B" team took third place with their 29 points. (Interestingly, they tied Clifton's "A" team, which also scored 29. I am unable to find tie-breaking rules for USATF-NJ cross country so am uncertain that our third place will stand.) Last-minute "C" team adder and potent rookie Mauro Castro upended expectations with his scorching 22:31. Combined with fellow rookie Ed Kavanagh's fast 23:57 and high jumper Rich Alexander's solid 25:02, the "C" team accumulated 25 points and thereby ended in second place. Team captain Scott Linnell squeezed out a 25:53 from his lumbering legs as backup man. Congratulations to both our "B" and "C" 60+ teams!
A similar intramural contest took place in the 50+ team category. Rather than create Shore AC "A' and "B" teams strictly on the basis of ability, we assigned the 50-59 guys to "A" and the 60-69 dudes to "B". Rick Lee generated some early suspense by grabbing the #1 scoring position for the elder "B" team. But the younger "A" squad took control from there, seizing the next four finishing spots. Rookie rocket Carlos Nunes left all other 50+ athletes in the dust with his roaring 19:12. Newcomer Ken Thomson made his second race for Shore AC memorable, streaking down the final stretch to trip the clock in 20:20 and earn the #3 scoring position. SAC stalwart Ken Ginsburg demonstrated superb fitness by running a 20:48 to secure the #4 spot. Sophomore dynamo Joe Demetrick proved he's fully recovered from injury by traversing the 5K course in 21:06 to lead all 50-54 men and claim the #5 position. Another rookie, Denis Keenan, completed "A" team scoring when he galloped across the threshold in 22:04 as #7 scorer. A quartet of great SAC 50+ gents served as the team's insurance policy: John Delaney in 23:00, Nolan McCarty in 23:08, Tim McQueen in 24:14 and Chris Rinaldi in 24:47.
Meanwhile, the 60-69 swashbucklers on the 50+ "B" team set a billowing jib and left the competition in their wake. With Lee parting the sea in the lead, Perez, Schwartz, Castro, Reynoso, Kavanagh, Alexander and Linnell trimmed the sails to keep their vessel flying. Final team scores revealed our supremacy: SAC "A" 21, SAC "B" 34 and Clifton 72. Ahoy, mates!
Our profusion of Shore AC runners gave us the chance to enter two 40+ men's teams as well. The "A" team achieved a perfect score of 15, while the "B" team pulled out a terrific tally of 59 to edge solid teams from Clifton and Fleet Feet / Essex. Famous Shore AC race walker Rich Luettchau reveled in his new status as a master athlete by storming the dauntingly hilly course with a lightning-fast 18:03 run to start the "A" team assault. Nunes then took the #2 spot, while Thomson and Ginsburg followed as #3 and #4 scorers. Chris Whitehead nailed the #5 position when he barreled across the timing strip in 20:54, completing the 1-2-3-4-5 moon shot. Keenan backed up his teammates with a fine #8 slot, thereby displacing almost all runners from other teams. Bravo, men!
Our Shore AC men's 40+ "B" team eked out second place in a close battle. Demetrick started us off by notching the #6 spot. Delaney (#10) and McCarty (#12) maintained the "B" team lead over its adversaries. Newcomer Peter Monaco then delivered a crucial 23:30 to claim the #13 spot. That gave the team 41 points through four finishers, comparing well versus Clifton (50) and Fleet Feet / Essex (60). When McQueen crossed as fifth team scorer, his 18 points sealed the deal by giving the team a final score of 59. Rinaldi (#19) offered effective backup to ensure the team's advantage over its rivals. Superbly done, lads!
Shore AC's gift for perfection extended to its Open Men team. Blessed with a cadre of six U40 torpedoes, our SAC squad dominated. Leading the charge were a pair of thoroughly exceptional young men: brothers Troy Hill and Brian Hill. They absolutely destroyed the course, finishing in 16:16 and 16:23, respectively. What a way to get the party started! After Luettchau sped home in the #3 position, teenager Matt McQueen made his Shore AC debut with an A+ time of 18:38. Hot on Matt's heels, John Larkin slammed the door on team scoring when he crossed 1 second later in 18:39. The resulting team score of 1-2-3-4-5 = 15 points represented Shore AC's fifth perfect team score of the meet. Billy Washer (19:11), Frank Novak (19:42), Whitehead and Monaco built a formidable backstop to guarantee the team's victory. Awesome work, men!!!
