Shore AC Masters Runners Make a Splash in National 5K at Atlanta
Only long-distance runners! From which other people would you hear "laughter in the rain"? There we were on the starting line in Atlanta, awaiting the start of the USATF Masters National 5K Championships, as a steady drizzle transformed into a downpour. To paraphrase Neil Sedaka's hit song from 1974, "Without an umbrella we were soaked to the skin / We felt a shiver run up our spines." But as the picture below attests, we didn't let the storm dampen our spirits. We race rain or shine!
October 19, 2025, Atlanta, GA: Jeff Conston (bib #1218), Rick Lee (bib #1264) and Kevin Dollard (peeking over Jeff's shoulder and pumping fists in the air) keep their spirits high as the rain pours down by the starting line.
The rain seemed to energize our Shore Athletic Club harriers. And we needed every bit of pep available to power through the hilly, twisty course. So, you ask, how did our four teams fare in the rain? Read on to discover...
M50+ Team
First to cross the finish line were members of the Shore AC men's 50+ team. Leading our charge was 64-year-old Rick Lee. Eager to stun his 60-64 age group rivals before he turns 65 in March, Rick zapped them with a high-voltage 18:16. He even short-circuited former Shore AC great Mark Zamek with a surge at the finish line, beating Mark by 4 seconds for second place in their age group. Next in for the SAC M50+ crew was our only guy younger than 60: Jeff Conston. He roared through the "Atlanta flat" course at a 6:15 per mile pace to trip the timing system in 19:27. So far, so good for the Shore AC M50+ team! They were ahead of Atlanta Track Club's B team. Alas, our third M50+ team member was human slug -- a.k.a. team captain -- Scott Linnell. He found the hills much to his disliking. By the time Scott lugged his legs across the finish line, 24 minutes and 31 seconds had elapsed on the clock. Consequently, the Atlanta B team easily finished second while we descended to third place. But, hey, we still made the podium! With the corresponding 80 points, our M50+ squad clinched at least second place in the 2025 USATF Masters National Team Grand Prix. Our boys will have a shot at first place in the Grand Prix when they run in the final race on November 1: the 5K XC shootout in San Francisco.
M70+ Team
When they hear how our Shore AC men's 70+ team performed in the Georgia rain, entrepreneurs will be bottling the precipitation and marketing its power of rejuvenation. What a scene! Less than 30 seconds after the incomparable Rick Becker finished first in the 70-74 age group at 20:48, the ENTIRE trio of SAC septuagenarians came storming around the final bend. Sensational 73-year-old Jim Linn crossed first for the team in 21:13. One blink of an eye later, fast car fancier Kevin Dollard flew across the timing mat at 21:14 to polish off his first national race as a 70-year-old. Fellow Porsche aficionado Hal Leddy floored his accelerator and launched his body through the finish line arch 4 seconds later in 21:18. That's right: the guys finished as a pack all within 5 seconds of each other. Needless to say, they won convincingly! With the win, they clinched at least third place in the 2025 USATF Masters National Team Grand Prix. There is even a chance that our lads could overtake Atlanta for second place by doing well at the Grand Prix finale, namely the 5K XC meet in San Francisco. Stay tuned!
W60+ Team
Knowledgeable racing fans eagerly awaited the showdown in Atlanta between women's 60+ Grand Prix front-runner Shore Athletic Club and second-place Atlanta Track Club. With a mere 20 points separating the two powerful squads, the saga was bound to play out across both of the remaining Grand Prix races: 5K and 5K XC. A win by Shore AC in the 5K would put them in the driver's seat with a 30-point margin. However, a win by Atlanta in the 5K would narrow Shore AC's lead to just 10 points, giving Atlanta a chance to pull even with Shore AC by beating them in the subsequent 5K XC race. In this case, Atlanta would win the tie breaker by virtue of a better head-to-head record.
Adding to the suspense, top age 60+ female Shore AC harrier Suzanne La Burt had sustained a foot injury two months prior and had not yet healed enough to attempt the 5K race in Atlanta. Could Shore AC beat host Atlanta in the 5K without its leading lady?
Shore AC rookie rocket Pam Ricker aimed to prove that the ladies in white tops could indeed prevail. She muscled up and down the daunting hills, then gunned for the finish line when she realized that Atlanta's front runner, Kris Huff, was chasing her down. Pam notched a magnificent time of 22:33 to clip Huff by 3 seconds. Next in for Shore AC was the world-renowned 70-year-old Nora Cary. Her time of 22:59 eclipsed all other 70+ women in this national championship race by more than 5 minutes. But it was a touch off of her usual pace. As a consequence, former 65-69 age group rival Patrice Combs finished 18 seconds ahead of Nora and gave her Atlanta squad a 15-second edge. The race would come down to the third and final scorers for each team. Alas for Shore AC, their potent 69-year-old star Kitty Musante had suffered a debilitating fall two weeks prior to the race. She could barely walk for the first week. She did not attempt to jog until 4 days before the race. Even the day before the race, while checking out the course, she felt compelled to stop after one mile and walk back to the hotel. So, the fact the Kitty finished the race in 24:43 gives testimony to her amazing mettle. However, it couldn't offset the excellent 23:23 performance by Atlanta's third lady, Lesley Hinz. Hence, Atlanta beat us and narrowed our Grand Prix lead to 10 points. The steadily improving Leslie Nowicki notched a very solid 27:07 on the challenging course as backup Shore AC runner.
The Grand Prix winner in the W60+ category will be determined at 5K XC finale in San Francisco on November 1. Go, ladies, GO!!!

M80+ Team
When new Shore AC member Jack Frame turned 80 years old in March of this year, veteran SAC member and fellow octogenarian Przemek Nowicki saw an opportunity for Grand Prix supremacy in the men's 80+ category. After roping 85-year-old SAC legend Roland Cormier into the scheme, these tres amigos began their quest for glory. First stop was the USATF Masters National 10K in Dedham, where they dispatched a venerable team from New England 65+ Runners' Club for win #1. Next, they competed unopposed in the 1 Mile Championships at Indianapolis to snare their second victory. If our SAC graybeards could now prevail over a strong M80+ team from Atlanta Track Club in the 5K race, they would clinch first place in the Grand Prix. Jack got the team rolling in this high-stakes pool-hall match, burying his shot in the corner pocket with a brilliant 27:27. Przemek followed with a deft chip into a side pocket at 28:59. It was well over another minute before Atlanta's first man broke the timing plane. BUT, Atlanta's #2 and #3 runners followed a minute apart. Would Roland be able to finish in time to secure victory for Shore AC? SAC supporters waited in suspense! Suddenly, there he was! A roar sounded from the exuberant crowd as Roland crossed in 35:40, nailing the team win with 2 minutes to spare! CONGRATULATIONS. MEN!!!
