Shore AC Plays in Peoria, Stages Silver and Bronze Performances
They raised the curtain early on the 2025 production of the Steamboat Classic 4 Mile race. Team check-in opened at 5:30 am, there at the USATF tent beside the lovely banks of the Illinois River in downtown Peoria. You can bet that those eager harriers from the Shore Athletic Club showed up just minutes later, ready to check in as teams.
We managed to enter three teams into the USATF Masters National LDR event. The original plan was to have four teams. However, seemingly universal travel snags reduced our numbers slightly. In the end, we declared a 5-member women's 60+ squad, a men's 50+ trio and a men's 70+ quartet. Happily, each team reached the podium!
W60+ Team:
As leaders in the 2025 USATF Masters National Grand Prix, our women's 60+ team needed a presence at this race to maintain its lead over hard-charging Atlanta Track Club. Without our top runners, we knew it would be nearly impossible to beat Atlanta in Peoria. But second place would suffice, and that is what our gals achieved! Rookie surprise Pam Ricker paved the way. She shadowed Atlanta's leading ladies much of the way as she sped to a scintillating 29:05. Brand new member Lisa Vaughn made a strong debut for Shore AC, crossing the finish line in 33:10 as second scorer. Team scoring came to a close when another fresh face, Marie Capdevielle, scampered over the timing mat in 33:33. Just a few blinks of an eye later, Shore AC veteran Leslie Nowicki contributed our first level of insurance with a solid 33:41. The team effort reached completion when even longer-term Shore AC veteran Susan Stirrat sped down the final hill and triggered the clock in 34:55. Kudos, ladies! Their second-place finish in Peoria kept our W60+ in first place in the Grand Prix, 30 points ahead of Atlanta.
M50+ Team:
Heading into the race in Peoria, the Shore AC men's 50+ was in an unaccustomed position: occupying first place in the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. We knew, though that the lead was tenuous. After all, juggernaut Atlanta Track Club lurked a mere 5 points behind. Moreover, we had a ragtag crew for Peoria: one legitimate age 50-59 runner and two washed-up curmudgeons over the age of 65. We were resigned to ceding the Grand Prix lead to Atlanta. Yet, simply by having a team in the race, regardless of its caliber, we would harvest important Grand Prix points.
We nearly missed out on having an M50+ team at all. True 50-59 speedster Scott Siriano had to drive 900 miles from Colorado to Peoria in less than 24 hours. That meant staying up all night with no breaks. Scott arrived 3 minutes before registration closed. Talk about just-in-time travel! Being jacked up on caffein, Scott tore up the 4-mile course in 24:53 to lead our motley crew. Iowan John Blaser, running in his first race ever for the Good Ship Shore AC, rowed hard upstream and crossed the finish line with an impressive 28:00 as second team scorer. Time passed. Spectators yawned. Eventually, third team member Scott Linnell appeared around the river bend, puffing as he pedaled his paddleboat. Scott clocked in at 31:10, with the street sweepers not far behind. But no matter. The team still nabbed a spot on the podium! Thanks to our third-place finish, the Shore AC men's 50+ team now ranks second in the 2025 Grand Prix with 210 points -- only 5 points behind Atlanta! Goooo, team!!!
M70+ Team:
Nearly a decade ago, Shore AC featured a potent men's 70+ team that won back-to-back USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. Atlanta Track Club's M70+ crew then asserted themselves as champions. Two years ago, the Boulder Road Runners established their own M70+ dynasty and began winning every national race in sight. But this year, bolstered by new septuagenarians, our Shore AC M70+ is seeking to upend the Boulder dynasty. We succeeded in breaking their nearly two-year win streak at the preceding national race, namely the James Joyce Ramble 10K in Dedham. Could we repeat our magic?
SAC superstar Jim Linn spearheaded the team's efforts with a spectacular 27:12, made all the more amazing by the fact that he was feeling ill. Former USATF Masters Athlete of the Year Reno Stirrat stormed through the finish line arches in 27:31. Reno's superb time drew us within about 20 seconds of Boulder. However, our two remaining team members didn't really stand a chance of beating Boulder's third man. Indeed, they were both in the 80's and had come to Peoria hoping to compete as part of a Shore AC M80+ team. When it became clear that we would lack a third 80+ man, the two agreed to slide down to the 70+ team. A key member of that championship Shore AC M70+ team from a decade ago, Przemek Nowicki, cruised across the timing mats in 35:51 to complete team scoring. Though it was not enough to beat Boulder, it was enough to edge out Atlanta for second place. Way to go, guys! Effective insurance was provided by another SAC veteran, 85-year-old Roland Cormier. His solid 43:23 ensured that we would have a complete team in case any of the front three had been forced to drop out of the race. What's more, both Przemek and Roland won their respective 5-year ago groups. Bravo!!! Our men's 70+ team solidified its hold on second place in the 2025 Grand Prix.
