United by Spirit, Shore AC Shows Airlines How to Fly
Summer and flight delays seem to go hand in hand. Consider the previous weekend's trip to Peoria and the USATF Masters National 4 Mile race. All of us who flew missed our connecting flight at Chicago's O'Hare Airport due to late arrival from Newark. Some of us resorted to renting a car and driving the nearly 3 hours to Peoria to make sure that we arrived before the 6:00 pm deadline to submit team changes. As for this weekend's trip to Indianapolis and the USATF Masters National 1 Mile race, we had direct flights. What a relief! So, even though the Spirit Airlines flight carrying 7 of our crew was an hour delayed, the only impact was an hour less of sleep.
The sun, of course, can never be delayed. It rose promptly at 6:15 am on this first full day of summer and began heating the streets. By the 9:50 am start of the masters men's race, temperatures were well into the 80s. Many runners were unfazed, with the first five men all running under 4:30. The top women were equally unfazed 15 minutes later, as 59-year-old Michelle Rohl annihilated the American 55-59 age group record with a white-hot 5:10.
While the Shore AC teams might not have brought home all of the medals that were expected, we still collected a nice assortment of gold, silver and bronze. Let's begin our accounting on the women's side.

W50+ Team:
Robbed by United Airlines of an opportunity to score points at the National 4 Mile race in Peoria the weekend before, our ladies got revenge at Indianapolis. We finally had enough ladies at Indianapolis to enter a 50+ team (even though all of them were over the age of 60). A champion on the dog show circuit, 68-year-old Kitty Musante ran herself through the course at Indy and snared a superb 6:35. The ever-improving Leslie Nowicki sliced 8 seconds from her previous mile at the May 17 Mile By Impact Zone by completing Indy in a very respectable 7:42. 2023 USATF National Grand Prix 65-69 Age Group Champion Susan Stirrat then locked down team scoring with a solid 8:14. Thanks to this dynamic trio of ladies, the Shore AC women's 50+ team picked up 70 team points. In doing so, they have moved into third place in the 2025 Grand Prix with 160 total points. Only Central Park Track Club (200 points) and Garden State Track Club (190 points) stand between them and a possible National Grand Prix Championship!
W60+ Team:
Anyone who thought the Shore AC women's 60+ team could easily repeat as National Grand Prix Champions got a rude surprise at Indianapolis. Atlanta Track Club picked up their second win in a row over us. In doing so, they closed the gap with us to just 20 points. Atlanta mustered an all-star team for the mile, deploying track legend Lesley Hinz along with regulars Kris Huff, Michelle Allen and Mireille Silva. We gave it a good shot but fell 21 seconds short. 2024 USATF National Grand Prix 60-64 Age Group Champion Suzanne La Burt led our charge with a blazing 5:53 (gun time). But 5:53 wasn't enough to prevent the end of her 2-year winning streak in national LDR races, as Lisa Veneziano and Judy Stobbe celebrated recent age 60 birthdays with incredible times of 5:40 and 5:44, respectively. Freshman phenomenon Pam Ricker delivered a magnificent 6:28 as second team scorer. Renowned surgeon Deb Capko battled the heat to register a solid 7:01 and wrap up team scoring. With their silver medal performance, the ladies racked up 90 points in the 2025 National Grand Prix. Our total of 350 points keeps us ahead of Atlanta and their 330 points. Last year's W60+ nemesis, Liberty Track Club, occupies a distant third place with 150 points. All eyes now focus on Race #6: the 5K in Atlanta in October 19. Go, ladies, GOOO!!!

June 21, 2025, Indianapolis, IN: How sweet it is! Members of the Shore AC men's 80+ team savor their second victory in the 2025 National Grand Prix. Left to right: Przemek Nowicki, Jack Frame and Roland Cormier.
Let's now review the men's fortunes at the Monumental Mile in Indianapolis.
M80+ Team:
Though they ran unopposed, this scribe believes that our Shore AC men's 80+ team would have conquered any foe at Indy. Rookie sensation Jack Frame got the ball rolling with a fantastic 7:41. Hot on Jack's heels, Shore AC veteran and fellow 80-year-old Przemek Nowicki notched a ripping 7:41. Club fans rose to their feet in jubilation when 85-year-old Roland Cormier roared across the timing mat in 9:18 to seal the team win. Both Jack and Roland won their age groups. Our men's 80+ team needs to complete just one more race to secure the 2025 USATF Masters National Grand Prix Championship. You can do it, men!
M60+ Team:
It's been a tough luck season for both the Shore AC men's 60+ and 70+ squads. Plagued with injury and illness, both teams have struggled to reach the minimum of 3 for a team at national races this year. Illness struck the 70+ team for this race, preventing one of our registered runners from making the trip. With only two 70+ guys remaining, we chose to consolidate them with our men's 60+ team. Although the resulting 60+ squad couldn't hold a candle to top-notch rivals Greater Springfield, TC Running, Genesee Valley and Atlanta, we did beat Ann Arbor for fifth place. Amazing 72-year-old Jim Linn staked our crew to a terrific start with a screaming 5:47. Jim won his 70-74 age group in the process. Had fate been kinder, SAC ace Reno Stirrat would have finished the race not far behind Jim. Alas, Reno's legs did not cooperate. Sharp pains at the 1/4-mile mark compelled him to withdraw from the race. That left the job to true 60+ harriers Scott Linnell and Gary Wiesinger to salvage the race. They worked together, striving as fast as their legs could carry them through the heat to clock 6:29 and 6:30, respectively. It may be a lost cause for the Shore AC men's 60+ team to repeat as podium finishers in this year's National Grand Prix. They sit in sixth place with 140 points with only two races remaining. But, hey, you gotta be in to win! Stay tuned, sports fans!
M50+ Team:
By contrast, our men's 50+ team stands a very good chance of reappearing on the Grand Prix podium. In fact, they hold the lead with only two races remaining! Cross-country driver Scott Siriano spearheaded the squad's sortie with a scorching 5:44. Shore AC Comeback Runner of the Year Chris Rinaldi checked off another milestone in his stunning recovery from serious injury by clocking a remarkable 6:03. Newcomer John Blaser drove 5 hours from Iowa to complete the 50+ team, spinning his 68-year-old legs to a spectacular 6:10. So, how did the team fare versus the competition? Their names were not called at the post-race awards ceremony. It was only 2 days later, when team results were published, that we learned the good news. The Shore AC M50+ reached the podium with a third-place finish! Hooray!
Two races remain in the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. They are:
* Sunday, October 19: 5K in Atlanta
* Saturday, November 1: 5K XC in San Francisco
Registration is now open for both races.
GOOOOOOO SHORE AC!!!!!
