By Joyce! Shore AC Slams the 10K Ramble with Epic Performances
Were the Greek poet Homer alive today, he might have penned an ode to the Shore Athletic Club and its stunning success at the 2025 USATF Masters National 10K race in Dedham, Massachusetts. "Hermes looked upon the large stream of runners, approved of the white-clad Shore AC striders and filled them with determination. Not to be outdone, Nike jolted their muscles with energy and sat back with great satisfaction as they sped to victory."
One might indeed attribute to divine intervention Shore AC's eye-popping achievements at the race. This team captain projected that only one of our seven age group teams -- specifically our women's 60+ crew -- would win. But in the end, four of our teams took top prize! Furthermore, two more gained the podium by placing second and third. Only one team, an elderly and outclassed men's 40+ squad, failed to medal.
Find a cozy nook, dear reader, and savor the saga of this monumental occasion.

All checked in, the Shore AC women's 60+ quintet prepares for their rendez-vous with destiny. L-R: Susan Stirrat, Nora Cary, Pam Ricker, Leslie Nowicki and Suzanne La Burt.

W60+ Team:
Let us commence our story with the Shore AC women's teams. Considered the odds-on favorite by USATF Running Professor Paul Carlin, our 60+ women had every intention of fulfilling his prophesy. 2023 Shore AC Athlete of the Year Suzanne La Burt continued her unbeaten streak in national races since turning 60 well over a year ago. She annihilated the rolling course in 40:13 to place fifth overall among masters women. It also gave her a margin of over 3 minutes compared to her age 60-64 competition. Meanwhile, 2024 USATF National Masters Athlete of the Year Nora Cary broke her own age 70-74 age group world record for 10km, lowering her time from 43:41 to 43:20. Oh, and Nora outdistanced her age group competition by 12 minutes. Three cheers for Nora!!! At this point, Shore AC had two women across the finish line before any other 60+ female. The stage was set for rookie sensation Pam Ricker to apply the coup de grace. That she did, rocketing across the finish line in 48:24 to complete Shore AC team scoring and secure the win by a margin of nearly 6 minutes. Not a bad experience for Pam's first national race! Had Pam faltered, Leslie Nowicki would have preserved the victory as first backup runner with her excellent 52:50. Decorated club veteran Susan Stirrat delivered a strong 55:50 as second backup to guarantee the team a podium appearance. With the win in Dedham, our W60+ team grabs the lead in the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. Go, ladies, go!!!
W50+ Team:
Excitement surrounded the Shore AC women's 50+ team in the lead-up to the race. The Running Professor prognosticated a battle between this and another New Jersey team, namely Garden State Track Club. While everyone knew that GSTC would win hands down, I wasn't so sure that our ladies could out-duel the W50+ team from Boston Athletic Association for second place. In fact, their lead runner, Diane Bowser, struck first in 42:48 before our first had crossed the finish line. A half minute expired before Natacha Smith shocked SAC partisans with a fast 43:23, much faster than my projected 46:00. The thrill of running in her first USATF Masters National race must have kicked Natacha into overdrive! Fans were just settling down when Rebecca Keenan, competing in her first "travel" race, roared across the timing strip in 44:08. But just seconds later, B.A.A.'s second runner, Justine Cohen, sped through the chute in 44:27. Boston Athletic still held the edge by 16 seconds. The race for second place among teams would come down to each team's third runner. Thankfully, our third gal was Maureen Massell. Maureen navigated her way through the bucolic streets of Dedham to finish with a magnificent 48:51, nearly 6 minutes ahead of B.A.A.'s #3. That did the trick. Our 50+ ladies earned silver! The 90 points that they earned puts them on the Grand Prix scoreboard in fourth place, only 25 points behind the leaders from Greater Lowell. Stay tuned to see if our W50+ team can climb further up the standings!

Never before has the Shore Athletic Club entered teams in all male masters age groups from 40+ through 80+ at a national road race. History was made at the James Joyce Ramble. Granted, our 40+ squad was composed of men all over all 55, so one could argue that it wasn't a true 40+ team. However, all of the other four Shore AC men's teams were "pure" from an age group perspective. No one else has to "slide down" to a younger team. And all the "pure" teams were purely phenomenal!

M80+ Team:
Speaking of making history, this may have been the first time that the Shore Athletic Club deployed a men's 80+ team at a national road race. Winning the race made this historic moment all the sweeter! Prized transfer Jack Frame set the pace, crossing the finish line in a remarkable time of 54:51. Long-time SAC member Przemek Nowicki motored in right behind Jack, tripping the timer in 55:09. Jack and Przemek went 1-2 in the 80-84 age group. That meant the team was off to an outstanding start. But a team requires three finishers to qualify for awards. Where, we wondered, was the team's third man, the legendary Roland Cormier? He had mentioned a problem with muscle tightness before the race. The clocked ticked on. Finally, at 1:34:29, Roland crossed the finish line. Relieved that he was okay and still ambulatory, we immediately wondered whether the team could possibly have beaten their competition from the New England 65+ club. The answer turned out to be...YES! Two of their better runners had failed to show, and the three who did could not match the combined speed of our elder heroes. Well done, ancient mariners!
M70+ Team:
Pundits expected a pitched battle among the many capable men's 70+ teams, but with Boulder Road Runners prevailing as usual. After all, Boulder's M70+ team had not lost in nearly 3 years, dating back to late 2022. Yet our Shore AC septuagenarians had other ideas. We upended the status quo, beating Boulder and the rest of the field by a margin of more than 1 minute per runner. Second-year slugger Jim Linn led off our batting order with a towering 41:59, good for second place in his highly competitive 70-74 age group. Jack Pottle of Boulder made it close, finishing a half minute later in 42:30. Scott Lucking of the Atlanta Track Club crossed a minute later in 43:39 to put his team in contention. But seconds later, track phenom Hal Leddy pounded out a terrific 43:47 as our second scorer. Shore AC supporters were still cheering Hal when Shore AC Hall of Famer Reno Stirrat flew through the finishing chute in 44:08 to complete team scoring. Reno overcame rib pain (from a dog-walking spill) that had compelled him to stop and walk twice during the race. That's Marine semper fi spirit for you! With the win, our Shore AC men's 70+ team moves into second place in the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Grand Prix. Can they overtake Boulder for first place? It seems doubtful, but one should never count out the Shore AC M70+ team!
M60+ Team:
Elderly runners know that, past age 60, speed tends to dissipate with each passing year. The scourge of injury strikes more often, too. It's why champion 60+ teams eventually get displaced by younger teams. For example, in 2002 the Shore Athletic Club's M60+ group was the new juggernaut on the national scene and won the James Joyce Ramble. The next year, new blood invigorated Atlanta Track Club's M60+ crew and they won JJR. Atlanta repeated in 2024. But as for this year, TC Running out of Minnesota had already previewed their prowess at Club XC Nationals in Tacoma and were expected to replace the old guard at JJR. But even they got displaced by a fresh set of newly minted 60-year-olds from Greater Springfield Harriers. Shore AC and Atlanta were thus relegated to battling each other for third place.
Dynamo Rick Lee spearheaded the charge for Shore AC. Despite having run a 2:51 in the Boston Marathon 6 days prior and running a leg of his victorious Shore AC M60+ 4x400 team at Penn Relays 3 days before, Rick shook off the fatigue and ripped a tremendous 37:57. Our boys in white were off to a good start! However, Atlanta's leading man, Lester Dragstedt, had kept Rick in his sights and crossed the finish line seconds later in 38:12. Shore AC's campaign for bronze received a big boost when Henry Notaro -- who had also run the Boston Marathon a mere 6 days prior -- willed his aching body across the threshold in a heroic 39:06. SAC partisans began feeling more confident as time elapsed with Atlanta's second man nowhere in sight. But their confidence turned to anxiety when Atlanta's second and third guys came galloping home seconds apart in 41:01 and 41:19. Where now was Shore AC's third and final scorer? It took a couple of minutes before our amazing 69-year-old Kevin Dollard reached the green and sunk his shot in 43:22. When team scores were tallied, a cheer erupted from the Shore AC bleachers. We had edged out rival Atlanta for the podium by a thin 7-second margin! Serving as all-important insurance runners for our third-place crew were coach Gary Wiesinger (44:55) and doctor Harry Pino (47:11). Stomp the stadium stands for these spectacular gents!
M50+ Team:
For as long as your truly has been a team captain, dating back to 2008, the Shore Athletic Club has never won a men's 50+ competition at a national road or cross-country race. The drought came to an end at this race. But it was close! Ace Rocky Falcone led our squadron of top guns into the dogfight, pulverizing the 10K course with a ferocious 35:30. However, the frontrunners from three other M50+ teams had already finished ahead of Rocky. The pressure was on! Enter sharpshooter Shane Anthony, who calmly fired a pinpoint 35:57 to beat the second men from those other three teams. We now held a roughly 40-second lead. But would it be enough? Former national age group champion Scott Siriano answered with a resounding "YES!" His scintillating 38:17 compared well with the #3 harriers of competing squads, delivering the win to Shore AC. A narrow margin of victory made our win especially sweet. Less than 1 minute separated Shore AC from second-place Atlanta Track Club and third-place Central Mass Striders. Veteran SAC clubmate Bob Shields supported the team with a solid insurance policy of 43:25.
With the win, the Shore AC M50+ team vaults into first place in the 2025 USATF Masters National LDR Team Grand Prix. Talk about the spoils of victory! Hooray to our M50+ platoon!!!
M40+ Team:
Don't let the team name "M40+" fool you. We weren't anywhere near that young. The squad was led by 57-year-old Jeff Conston. Although Jeff posted a blazing 38:27, he was several minutes slower than his much younger counterparts from other teams in the 40+ competition. Our trio was filled out by two greybeards much older than Jeff. Rookie Mike Heal turned in a very respectable 45:10 for his 64 years of age, while Scott Linnell coaxed his 68-year-old body into crossing the timing strip in 50:52. Although we were dead last, we rejoiced in having given the race our best effort and having put the Shore AC M40+ team on the 2025 Grand Prix scoreboard with 60 points.
